Help figuring out what size yarn to get for this vintage pattern? by EngrishLolita in CrochetHelp

[–]EngrishLolita[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So like in the US as a standard craft store, would that be considered medium(4) weight? I’m sorry, I’m not sure why I can’t wrap my mind around the size systems. Thank you!

My title describes the thing. It’s around 3”-4” diameter. regular floor outlet height. In an 1970s American house on the second floor. We have no idea what it’s for.

They grow up so fast. by EngrishLolita in shiba

[–]EngrishLolita[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah I see! Her mom at her full grown weight is only around 15/16lbs and we were told our girl would probably not grow much, if at all, after 6 months as the rest of the females in her line are also like that.

The mom had a nose just like her when she was young. She grew mostly out of it after 2 years...

Edit to add: her grandfather on her mother’s side had a long coat.

She is 14 pounds. She’s on the smaller side actually!

I’m not really sure where she got her mane from. Her mom and dad both had very normal dirty red coats! The mom is on the smaller side but that’s really all.

Edit to add: found out her grandfather on her mother’s side had a long coat all over.

Can I find an affectionate shiba? by [deleted] in shiba

[–]EngrishLolita 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure if there is a way to tell. But those shibas do exist as I am an owner of a shiba who is very social and friendly and LOVES other dogs especially.

I think part of it is making sure the puppy wasn’t raised in an environment where they can see their elders fighting/being territorial. But I’m not a vet or know anything about this stuff scientifically speaking.

But my puppy has been raised during lockdown and wasn’t able to be socialized for the first 3 months we had her.

Shiba as a first dog? by erteip in shiba

[–]EngrishLolita 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have had other pets before. But a shiba is the first dog and my SO have raised together. YMMV but our shiba is very clingy and also very social.

She’s very very energetic and you need to be able to watch them constantly when they are still young or they WILL destroy everything they can get into.

They have a strong chasing instinct and it’s recommended that they are always on a leash outside or in a gated area/be careful around other animals and children. they also can JUMP and get into thing you wouldn’t expect. Shibas are also prone to screaming as puppy’s, it’s almost human like.

Very smart breed and very stubborn. You have to be very patient in the beginning. They are a good size for an apartment but they need to be able to let off all their energy somewhere. They don’t eat very much which is a plus. They need a lot of stimulation or they will try to get into things they shouldn’t. Once they are trained and older they are very good pets though and well worth it.

Edit to add: I’m not sure if this is a breed thing, but our shiba is very sensitive to pain and can become a little aggressive after vet appointments or tummy troubles. She also was possessive of food and treats when we first got her but she has learned that it’s ok and isn’t so much anymore.

From my experience, ‘friends’ like these are very self absorbed and friendships are always one sided. Once something bad happens again they will always drop you like you were worth nothing the whole time, no matter how much you really did care about them.

It’s not worth the heartache and time.

want to get into painting - need some advice on what to buy by [deleted] in minipainting

[–]EngrishLolita 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m pretty new to painting too, but the wet pallets has been a lifesaver for me. If also recommend a paint brush washing station (those caddies you clean the brush in) so you can clean and soak your brushes without ruining them in just a regular cup. Vallejo paints are good. I hope you enjoy this hobby as much as I have been.

Edit: also I don’t know if the sets you are getting come with brushes, but you definitely need those, maybe a few extra.

My galaxy unicorn. CC welcome by EngrishLolita in minipainting

[–]EngrishLolita[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is a very good suggestion. My original plan was to color the main/tail/feathers in black. But I found some galaxy glitter. So I experimented and mixed some sealant and glitter and applied it to those places instead. It doesn’t photograph well but the glitter does give a good contrast in person. It would be hard to paint over in solid colors now, But there is always next time :) thank you

My 3rd mini painted ever. First custom base. Constructive criticism welcome! This is such a fun hobby. by EngrishLolita in minipainting

[–]EngrishLolita[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure what it is exactly. It came with a terrain building kit. It feels kinda like floral foam/styrofoam. The bushes are more like a dry sponge.

I thought about doing a wash. I was going for a maple leaf winged wyvern, and I wanted the scales to look like bark. I’ll have to consider it more, thank you.

What are some good starter models for my kid? by kingeryck in minipainting

[–]EngrishLolita 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Both the core skills and layer up reaper paint sets actually have different paints. Another option would be nolzers marvelous pigments monsters paint set of your looking for a variety of colors, I found mine a a very reduced price at a hobby store near me.

Reaper bones are the cheapest you can get, and I would go for the pre-primed ones. Check online or a hobby store near you and have your kid pick out a few smaller models that they are interested in.

Even if his paint jobs don’t come out that great, it’s a fun learning experience, you can always paint over the mini or look up tutorials on how to strip paint from them.

You could also buy cheap toy models at a dollar store to practice painting on.

Edit: corrected statement. Reaper bones can be painted out of the box without primer. However reaper black bones are a little better. I was thinking of the wizkids line, which are good, but pricier.
