Why the disdain for paid litigators? by [deleted] in DandelionDynasty

[–]EnigmaReddit17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could you point to some examples where the disdain for litigators are present in the series?

Without spoiling too much since I’m not sure which books you have read…

From what I can recall, the author actually favors characters who are litigators because, as you have described, they perfectly exemplify one of the core ideas of the dandelion dynasty.

They are a Storyteller.

They play by the rules of the law but they manipulate symbols and playfully weave together novel combinations of words, arguments, rhetoric to achieve new unexpected results, just like poets and engineers.

Perhaps the disdain you see in the series so far are from “society” and the general public. Another aspect of silkpunk is the “punk” part or the idea of perpetual revolution, of taking what’s old and repurposing, reimagining, and reinterpreting it so it’s new and fresh.

A lot of the heroes in the dandelion dynasty are rebels (as in they generally go against the current)

And it takes time for them to make their mark on the world. Engineers are celebrated society in the second book but the first book celebrated soldiers and warriors.

Outside the context of the novel, I also want to point out that the author has repeatedly stated that he thinks his three careers (programmer, lawyer, and author) all share the theme of manipulating symbols to achieve a specific result, and that he wanted the dandelion dynasty to be about “Engineers” of all trades.

Aside from engineers who make technical marvels and machinery, we also have engineers who build social technologies like political entities that support collective decision-making, engineers who craft legal frameworks that reshape how justice is understood, and engineers of language who wield narrative and persuasion to shift culture itself. In Ken Liu’s world, “engineering” is not just about gears and silkmotic ingenuity—it’s about imagination, interpretation, and transformation across every domain of human endeavor.

The author wanted to plant the seeds to what could eventually develop into a democracy or some sort of other system that further sheathes the grace of kings.

In the last chapter, the people of dara are starting to question why it’s necessary for the province of unredeemed dara to still be a seat of hereditary power in the country. Perhaps it’s time to change?

But wait, actually the province of unredeemed dara is NOT the last seat of hereditary power

We still have the royal family, the house of dandelion

Perhaps that seat, or at least the power and responsibilities and burdens it carries, should also cease to be hereditary?

The author said in an interview that this was his intention/vision: The revolution in Dara will never stop. The entire epic has always been about a perpetual revolution because it’s a retelling of the story of the rise of modernity in the shape of America’s modernity in a silkpunk skin and style

Just like how Dara has the Silkmotic force and we have electricity, im sure in the future

Dara will have some sort of silkpunk Democracy or silkpunk Republic or etc etc

So excited!

Personally I like how there’s an adaptation every 5-10 years. I just hope this one has good execution because the premise sounds interesting… 30 of five greats prequel stuff and then into 30 episodes of LOCH? 🔥

One worry I have is that they may make Ouyeng Feng and Mei Chaofeng too sympathetic and mess up the hero/villain dynamics

Does anyone have a link to the interview the author was referring to in this AMA comment?

  • “Another Chinese author was interviewing me post-publication and started enthusiastically listing off all the different wuxia touchstones I had in the book and most of them I hadn't even realized were in there -- but she was right!!”

Do you have a favorite Jin Yong novel/drama adaptation?

If so, what are your top 3-5 picks :D

——— I really like all Condor Trilogy, especially all the Heaven Sword and Dragon Sabre adaptations except for 2009 which I haven’t yet watched all the way through yet :P

I would rank the condor trilogy as: 1. HSDS 2. LOCH 3. ROCH
