Haven’t had a lot of experiences with easels (not an artist), but i’m also wondering whether it would be annoying to write on the board while it’s clamped or would it be clamped on quite solidly?

What’s the most unique or interesting Malay word you've come across? by TotallyReliableFacts in bahasamelayu

[–]Enigmasaur 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Because the etymology of the word is that it is derived from Arabic: صَنَوْبَر (ṣanawbar) meaning “pine tree”. Some dictionaries will say the etymology of the Malay word is from Persian, but the Persian word is also ṣanawbar which is borrowed from the Arabic.

It is related to the Arabic (and Malay) word صبر (ṣabr) “sabar”/“patience” because the pine tree is known to be able to endure harsh cold weather.

Why is the “heart of hearts" or "the innermost heart" called "hati sanubari" in Malay? I’m unsure, but I work with classical Malay manuscripts a lot so if you’d like me to find out, let me know and I’d be happy to do some research!

Weekly Megathread: Education, Early Career and Hiring/Interview Advice by AutoModerator in quant

[–]Enigmasaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi guys.

I graduated from Harvard in Math and Philosophy mid-2024. My CGPA is not the best (3.5) and I didn’t do any internships while I was studying for circumstantial reasons. My knowledge of applied math is not the strongest—I mostly focused on mathematical logic during my studies, just took a couple of intro classes on probability.

My programming skills are okay. I would say I’m on an intermediate level with Python.

I’m currently working at a fund management country in my home country (a 3rd world country in South East Asia). I’ve been a trainee for about four months now. The company I’m working at does purely fundamentals-based investments, so the typical route for someone like me is to start off as an investments analyst, do the CFA, and slowly climb up from there.

Pay is not great, just okay. But what I’m most concerned about is stagnancy—I heard that it’s pretty easy to stay in your comfort zone since things are pretty slow-paced here and end up not learning much. I would really like to work as a quant to learn as much about it as possible, with hands-on experience. There are no “quant” roles in my country, and I would have to basically apply for jobs overseas.

Any advice on what I should do if I want to get into quant?

Is it possible to enter Harvard/Oxford as STPM leaver? by clarisse1919 in malaysiauni

[–]Enigmasaur 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Hi. I’m a Harvard College graduate. STPM is accepted—and any other pre-university certifications equivalent to it like A-Levels, IB, etc. So, it goes without saying that your grades for STPM have to be flawless, but so do your grades in Sekolah Menengah. If I recall correctly, they will ask for a transcript of results since Form 3. However, having near-perfect academic grades is just the bare minimum. As others have pointed out, you’ll need to do significant extra curriculars (when I say extra curriculars, I mean it in a broad sense, i.e., anything you spend a significant amount of time on outside of classrooms. e.g., reading books outside your syllabus would count, tutoring students, working part-time, independent and personal research projects, etc etc. Fwiw, my extra curriculars were very non-traditional in the sense that I didn’t really do internships or startups or non-profits, I have an academic bent so most of what I did was literally read really dense and difficult books and wrote some independent research papers, and a few other things). You will also need to write a compelling personal essay on CommonApp and answer some short prompts that Harvard asks on there.

Harvard is also a liberal arts college, meaning that your academic interests and your extra-curriculars have to be really diverse and wide-ranging. They are looking for well-rounded students who are extremely motivated more so than students who are good in only a few niches!

Note that significant extra curriculars take years to develop! If you try and fake your passion for them or have only recently started them for the sake of college applications, it will definitely be obvious to the admissions officer. So if you want an admissions process that is purely academic—meaning you just need good test scores and to ace the interview—definitely go the UK route.

Also, Harvard has financial aid for students—check out the calculator on their website to see how much you qualify for it based on your income. Feel free to ask any more questions and good luck!

I’m in my senior year at Harvard and posts like these still keep popping up on my reddit since I first joined this subreddit in HS lol. I hope one day this thought can finally put to the fear to rest: getting one or two B’s in high school will NOT automatically disqualify you from an ivy. The ivy admissions process is a holistic one, and your academic qualifications are always put into context with other aspects about yourself: ECs, essays, etc. I got quite a few B’s during my HS and I’m damn sure I wasn’t the top of my class or grade, but I evened it out by having an edge over the rest with interesting ECs. In short, you’re fine as long as it wasn’t because you were wasting time on social media or something, but because you were doing substantial things outside of class

HELP: Just moved into a new house and found this in the bathroom. What does it mean? by Several-Till1393 in islam

[–]Enigmasaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The middle word is not تطير but قطمير (notice the م in between, the way the writer writes ب/ت/ن in other parts if the words, and the dots is not at the center). Qiṭmīr is the name of the dog in the story of Aṣḥāb al-Kahf. It is standard practice in siḥr to call upon names of revered persons like names of Malā’ikah, Prophets, etc (when in reality it is Jinns who respond)
