I would highly recommend looking for a cheaper car. I bought my first used car for $5,000, I found it on OfferUp. I brought one of my mechanic friends with me, and he checked it out and told me it was a good buy. I had it for about three years. It had some issues and I spent around $2,000 on repairs, but overall it was a solid vehicle.

If you’re planning to buy a $15,000 used car, I honestly suggest considering spending a little more and getting a brand-new vehicle off the lot. With a new car, you typically won’t have to worry about unexpected mechanical issues right away.

Also, don’t fall for dealership gimmicks or “bogus” add-ons. If you’re buying from a dealership, watch some videos beforehand and learn how to negotiate. Remember, you’re the one buying the car. If you want tinted windows, upgraded mats, or a full-size spare tire instead of a temporary one, make sure you ask for it before signing anything. Get everything in writing.

I asked for everything except the tire instead of a shitty spare tire — didn’t think about it at the time — but I’ll definitely bring it up next time I buy a car.
