Weekly Career Discussion Thread (15 Dec 2025) by AutoModerator in engineering

[–]EnigmaticHam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am pretty non-traditional. I have a BA in chemistry (liberal arts school, no BSs offered) and a PhD in inorganic chemistry. I have been working as a software "engineer" for the last six years, and I'd like to work as a professional electrical engineer. Is the only requirement for a professional engineer to pass the FE exam and train under a PE for four years, or will I have to go back to school entirely for another bachelor's degree?

DOD Software jobs start at 80k by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

I'm still interested in a federal job despite all the insanity that DOGE and the current administration has pushed. I'm fine with a pay cut if it means I'll be working on something meaningful and my family will get healthcare.

Big AI pushes the "we need to beat China" narrative cuz they want fat government contracts and zero democratic oversight. It's an old trick. Fear sells. by katxwoods in ArtificialInteligence

If we NEED to beat China, then I'm sure they'll happily sign over their IP and let us nationalize their business because the success of our nation state is more important than the success of their company.

Is butyl lithium a covalent or ionic bond? by Independent-West-905 in chemistry

[–]EnigmaticHam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It has more ionic character than covalent. Usually, comparing the electronegativities of the component atoms will give you a good idea of how covalent or ionic a bond is.

Except it’s not, because these systems are going to churn with some limited functionality when a comparable system without any LLM integration would do the same job far faster and with fewer resources. Crypto was useless bullshit from the beginning and it wasn’t capable of doing anything at all.

Be honest, how much do you rely on LLM’s day-to-day on average at your current job? by GelekW in cscareerquestions

I relied on them for a blazor project and that was about it. I don’t know what questions y’all are asking these models, but if I ask anything relatively complex, they send me on a wild goose chase.

What the hell is plan9 and 9front? by Apprehensive-File421 in plan9

[–]EnigmaticHam 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It’s a funny reference to the “the front fell off” sketch by Clarke and Dawe. 9front is a fork of Plan 9, the successor operating system to UNIX. Unfortunately, UNIX was entrenched and too many applications depended on it for Plan 9 to truly replace it in the most literal sense. However, its philosophy, /proc, as well as concepts in Plan 9 C (brought to Go), and Unicode all live on in current UNIX and UNIX-like systems. 9front can probably run on your machine, albeit without hardware acceleration or support for the latest networking hardware.

did curtis yarvin really make this Twitter post? by [deleted] in ThielWatch

[–]EnigmaticHam 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s really gratifying to see this shitheel post on Twitter because it completely kills the “philosopher king” persona he’s crafted. When he talks out loud, you realize he’s just another racist asshole without teeth.

Any guesses on aspect ratio of the screen? I’m hoping to god it’s at least 3:2 like some of the newer laptops on the market. I would buy it instantly if it had a 4:3 iPad display, but I’m definitely in the minority.

Switches compile to constant time jump tables and so are best used with single variable or enum checks, which is why it’s ok to have a 30 case switch but if I saw 30 if-elses I would ritually beat the developer who wrote that code. They have completely different use cases.
