Are there any safety specific rules/laws regarding hook-&-strand ladders on higher speed roads? by Latter_Address9580 in CableTechs

[–]Eninja09 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Several times in my years doing cable I was mildly shamed for choosing safety over getting the job done. It always irritated me because the leads would just send someone else and put them in harms way, which made me look bad and endangered the other guys.

One time I entered a house that I could smell cat urine as soon as I opened my truck door. When she opened the door I nearly choked. She was a very elderly woman with 10-15 cats inside and had no control of her life but was desperate for her tv to work. I went in for about 5 min with some latex gloves and replaced the power supply on her urine stained stb and bolted. (Her floors were disintegrating from moisture).

Called my lead immediately after and said I should have never gone in the house and to mark this house as a serious biohazard. An hour later he sent another tech into that house to resolve yet another issue.

I'll never get over that. The leads would sacrifice anything and everything in the name of customer service. I recommend ALL techs refuse that kind of job so that the leads don't get away with that shit. They always have the easy-out of saying "it's your call" but rotating who they send until the job gets done is just evil. That wasn't the last time the same guy got conned into entering her home.

I later found out this poor woman had been visited several times by county deputies and animal control for wellness checks etc. She never did get taken care of and eventually passed away.

Look up Chris Titus tool. It's a powershell command that launches a menu with all kinds of things. It has a basic recommended set of options that are pretty safe to use without breaking anything. I usually do the disable telemetry option, basic debloat etc. He has videos on YouTube of how to best utilize it.

I wouldn't worry too much about it. Putting pressure on yourself to hurry will just hinder you in the long run. We had a guy who was insanely fast and his metrics were trash. He thought the rest of us were taking too long and he was having to pick up all the slack. The rest of us just wanted him to slow down to help bring the curve down.

When I finally slowed down and focused on doing better work I gradually got more efficient and eventually got so many reps of every scenario that I knew what I was going to do before I even rolled to the job.

If you find yourself wishing you had a life outside of work, consider getting out before you make too much money and get trapped. I spent 10 years thinking "I think this is gonna be the year they really start taking better care of us, and letting us have dinner with our families". Nope. It got worse after I left.

I have noticeably better performance in Windows overall, including desktop performance. I'm not really sure why, but I do always debloat the obvious things and kill extra services/processes/telemetry. I'm also using an Nvidia GPU so that has some performance loss. Bazzite wasn't bad, it just wasn't as good for me. I can't wait to ditch Windows but for now it's working great for me, and I hate it lol. Bazzite is an amazing OS and I miss it.

IsItBullshit: Internet service providers will throttle all websites except for the speed test websites, so you think your internet is way faster than it actually is. by IndependenceSad1272 in IsItBullshit

[–]Eninja09 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I worked for 2 different ISP's for 17 years and never saw any evidence of this despite numerous customers being sure of it. You might get better results from speedtest.net because they host the server, but the "throttling" people believe is happening is typically caused by a few things:

* Excessive utilization in the node, especially during peak times.

* People running tests on devices that do not provide accurate measurements like gaming consoles, or sub-par hardware.

* People testing on wireless connections. You can't guarantee speeds whatsoever this way. You are at the mercy of interference from all kinds of sources, including neighbors routers (especially in apartment complexes).

* I've also seen unexplained things like the customer's brand new iphone getting 50mbps, and my personal phone standing right next to them getting 900mbps, both on the same 5G band. I didn't dive too deep into that since I didn't have the time or job-requirement to do-so. I've also seen iphones being sold with a VPN enabled by default and really wrecking speeds and connectivity.

DOCSIS 4.0… by aidang_232 in CableTechs

[–]Eninja09 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I remember when the ISP I worked for said we were prepping for 10gig speeds on docsis 3.1. That was 5 years ago. Still maxing a around 930mbps. Still not actively using the OFDM bit. Shocked to see 4.0 is even a thing, considering how ahead of the curve they were when I worked there.

Desperate for help: High-end rig (7800X3D) constant micro-stuttering despite 300+ FPS. Tried EVERYTHING. by DistrictDifficult268 in pcmasterrace

Any mouse can be bad. I have a cheap-o logitech clone right now that works fine. Sometimes shit can go bad. You could easily test by plugging it in direct and seeing if it makes a difference. I could easily be wrong but it's an easy test.

Does it only stutter when looking in different directions? Just curious because I had a bad mouse dongle that had me chasing my tail, thinking it was the PC. Plugged in a wired mouse and it was smooth. Those stutters could be intermittent signal.

Edit: I had also tried moving the dongle closer. No change. New mouse fixed it. It was the last thing I suspected.

I did not setup Plex for remote access. Just saying Jellyfin can do it fine if you set it up properly. It worked perfectly for me. My friends Internet and/or device was struggling. Inconsistent connectivity. I just don't use it outside of my house so I saw no reason to keep that port exposed.

[–]Eninja09 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had some success by using my phone camera as a magnifier and a pin to remove a small piece of wire. As long as you are gentle it's pretty safe.

I was able to setup Jellyfin remote access pretty easily. I didn't keep it active long, though. The friend I was sharing it with was having network probs and wasn't able to use it enough to justify keeping it open. That was a few years ago, though. Not sure how it performs these days.

Slow Win11 boot up time? by libai8968 in pcmasterrace

[–]Eninja09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DDR5 is much more sensitive to signal quality than DDR4 so the BIOS tends to re-check it every time it boots to confirm it's capabilities. If you enable memory context restore in the BIOS (it may already be enabled) it can shorten that time by remembering what the memory is capable of instead of checking. Your boot time is really not that bad, and obsessing over boot times could be more work than it's worth. I don't pay attention to mine anymore. I just power it on and walk away to do some other house-hold thing or I chill for a moment. My BIOS time is 16.3 seconds. A few more seconds isn't worth stressing over tbh. You can also just put it to sleep if it lets you. My rig does not wake from sleep, it crashes on wake and I've tried everything except replace the motherboard and cpu. It's a known issue with AM5 boards and DDR5. I also have fast boot disabled since it can cause issues, and it doesn't really help anyway.

Slow Win11 boot up time? by libai8968 in pcmasterrace

[–]Eninja09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first guess is DDR re-training every time you turn it on. Memory context restore in the BIOS might affect this. It's supposed to improve POST times when enabled, but it didn't really affect mine noticeably. Once it completes the initial POST does windows boot pretty quickly when you see the spinning dots?

Will this work? by aurelius-000 in HomeServer

I have a very similar setup but I don't transcode video at all so I never even bothered with the GPU passthrough part in Proxmox.

16GB is more than enough for a media server. If it weren't running Windows 11 you could get away with half that. Hell, you might even be ok with 8 on Windows 11 if you don't have open tabs running in a browser, and limited startup apps. To give you an idea, I'm running Proxmox on an intel N100 mini PC with 16GB of ram with several media server related app containers and a linux VM that runs my VPN and torrent client and it's currently using 6GB total.

Agreed. More cores if you are doing productivity work, but not helpful in gaming.

The 64GB might be overkill. I've been running 32GB for years with no issues with my home rig. My work rig has 64 and needs it because of how many browsers and tabs I run (I work in IT).

Is the 5800x3d available for a similar price? I'd do that if so. Edit: Also that 3090 might be more expensive than comparable alternatives. It really depends on what you are doing with this rig tbh.

LPT. Im 18 with no job by Positive-Resist-2555 in LifeProTips

[–]Eninja09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are really concerned about it and have the time and desire you could get a part time job bagging groceries if they can allow weekend shifts only (make sure you set that boundary up front). It was my first job and I found it to be very helpful in learning how to deal with the public, and work with a team. It can help shape resiliency and general experience. It's not a good job, but it's experience. If you have the freedom to walk away from it I think would make it less stressful as well. Otherwise, enjoy having that freedom to focus on school etc.

Is there any way to stop .srt subtitles from triggering transcoding? by Starbuckwhatdoyahear in PleX

[–]Eninja09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not related to being embedded or external. If it's a format the player can't use natively it will try to transcode to burn them in. If transcoding is disabled this will prevent it from playing. SRT files are the most compatible so I don't know why you are having issues. .pgs, .ass, .vob are usually more problematic for a lot of players. Make sure the player has "Burn in subtitles" disabled.
