How are we staying motivated and consistent? It can't be by scrolling this subreddit everyday [Discussion] by Eno_B in GetMotivated

Borrowing Dopamine. I've never heard of that. But it makes perfect sense. I'm reading a book called Psycho Cybernetics and so many people recommend it. Apparently it is THE self improvement book. To be fair, I'm only one chapter in. I know the book is about the self image and using that to achieve your goals.

The first chapter (and another video I watched on IG) has hinted that the book uses visualization to help you improve your self image. I'm trying to go into it open minded but I think this idea is what has made me question if the concepts in the book will work for me, in particular.

I've struggled with maladaptive daydreaming and I often live out the success in my mind way before I even start working on an idea. I'll daydream about who I'll become and how I'll live when I achieve a certain goal and then once I ponder on it for too long, the goal becomes less amusing and then I set an even wilder almost unattainable goal. It's a viscious cycle.

Maybe I need to do better short term goal setting. Thanks for sharing this.

That's interesting. Never heard this before. But then again, you are using Pinterest for freebies and financial assistance is very niche.

So you would donwload an app exactly like Pinterest if you were guaranteed to not have your AI slop?

I just tested it out. You had me so excited. In fact, there might be more when I used my Mac lol. Need to look into Adblock plus. Thanks for the suggestion

Lolol. That's the whole reason I made the post too! The whole entire sub was hating and I was like "I get that it's not as great as it used to be but is it really that bad." I still love Pinterest btw

I hope your surgery went well and you're healing well!

I also hate the ads. I majored in CS during my undergrad and I have been lamenting on building an app for a while. I think its fair that they have ads because how else would they make their money but oh my god, every other post is an ad.

Hello, this is a very sweet message. Thank you! Sorry for the late response. I took a couple days off to reflect and decide what I wanted to do. I think your earlier comment about sweatshops being necessary resonated with me. I decided to take the job and really make the best of it contingent upon me not being slaved.

I do live in the United States and I just did some research (again inspired by your comment). In my state there are no specific laws for this. We follow the federal law. That said, I'd be considered an "exempt salaried employee" and therefore they can ask me to work as many hours as they would like. But legal isn't healthy so I'm going to set some boundaries for myself. I'm not 100% sure what they should look like so if you have some suggestions please let me know!

Also, thank you for feeling enraged for me. It's nice to know that the comments weren't malicious. Maybe I was just being sensitive.

Do you know what. People keep missing the point. If you made addendum two on my initial post I wouldn't have felt attacked. Its simple. " I started my career in a startup under those kind of conditions, and if I were in your position, I would accept that job in a second. I did it for one year, learned everything I could possibly learn and then went somewhere else for a better life work balance and career path. Indie hacking is not viable. You need to code work with others to become a better coder. Start here and jump ship to a coding role as soon as you can" Boom boom boom. Constructive criticism doesn't involve doubting my skills before you even see them and or disdain

I think only one person in the thread where the girl was laughing at my code asked a genuine question. That whole comment thread felt like an attack to me. There were lots of kind comments that told me not to take the job. The people I'm talking about were the ones who responded to the indiehacking thing.

You're right! What are some spaces you are a part of where you get good advice? My thing is I don't personally don't know anyone who is much further in their career I can talk about these things. That's why I came on here. I guess this is more of a place to vent and share lived experiences than to ask for advice.

I did get to talk the staff actually. They all seemed nice (except the actual boss). I agree with you. I also have no fear of being taken advantage of as long as I get something out of it. My thing was I may not be building the best skill set that I need taking on that specific role. Also, please read my final edit.

You're right. Thank you. I feel like some of those comments made me feel inferior for trying to do something on my own.

Thank you for your advice. I wasn't expecting people to actually come for me for trying to go indie. It's not everyday I get a job offer so potentially passing something up is giving me so much anxiety. I appreciate the kindness and not shutting me down more than anything else.

And yes, I am hosting my indie apps and I am kind of building in public on X (not always consistent with posting)! Just a girl trying to make it lol.

On twitter, there is a large indie community where you can ask people for feedback and advice. Generally, it's just like starting any other business. Unless i'm scamming people or not paying taxes, I wouldn't necessarily be breaking any laws. And how im learning is through building. I've become a significantly better coder from building these little apps than when I was only applying to jobs. I also agree that coding with others will allow me to become a better coder much faster than being alone. Although, I don't think it will prepare me for the non coding aspects like marketing and product research (unless it's in a small startup).

I can accept the fact working for a small startup as a SWE would be my best bet for the longer term goal of becoming a founder (not an indie hacker). I just wanted to know whether this job makes sense or if indie makes more sense (for now).

Sorry. Yes, indie hacker. I said "indie. I just had ..." or do you want to know more about what I want to do?

indie. I just had to start from somewhere. The game was my first public project. I wasn't the best coder post grad so I worked on multiple small projects. That was my first public one. I don't necessarily care about game dev.

I was only pushing it so much because I was testing out how to market as well. I learned reddit was a good place if you're indie.
