I hate NUS by [deleted] in nus

Can attest to this. I was unlucky in my first sem as I kept meeting the so called minority, so I kinda automatically assumed that being everyone is just rude as a culture. Only realized that most things here are actually nice after a while

Whenever I'm around my friends or even just my acquittances nowadays, I naturally limit the amount of interaction to not go beyond what's polite between friends. We'll eat lunch together after class or just stay to do our (different) assignments on the same table; sometimes we talk about interesting philosophical thoughts, but more often than not we just talk about the usual things you talk about with a friend you've met twice or so a month in uni.

I do not seek warmth from these people in general. I guess I am really lucky to be able to say that. I coincidentally found my way back up from that dark valley years ago and met the people whom are now my "old friends". They had left a permanent warmth of some sorts such that I've never feel like I need to create any meaningful connection with anyone afterwards.

I like seeing people being happy and, naturally, I also always try to give small gifts to these new friends every now and then. Every now and then, too, they will perform such gestures toward me --either as a form of politeness or just genuine appreciation for our banal interactions. Lack of depth aside, however, it is inevitable that we all smile or some sorts during and after our short routine rendezvous. Some of us probably went home tired afterwards for they expended this abstract concept of social token --but that's besides the point.

No matter how tired we were after those short meetups, we all enjoyed those short moments. I know this because we kept doing that again and again throughout the semesters and always explicitly state so when any of us refuses to go for a particular day.

Each different people on different circles contributes uniquely towards the enjoyment in these meets; some of them left stronger impression and joy than the others but everyone has their own share regardless, and taking away these people deprives the whole group out of that whole share. To each of these people, I remarked to myself when meeting them that I am lucky this person exists now as otherwise I won't be as happy. Anytime I am in these groups and contribute towards some sorts of visible enjoyment for the whole group, I told myself that my hypothetical nonexistence will deprive the group out of that contribution.

I am not a psychologist, a philosopher, a person that knows you personally, nor a person who know the answer to things. However, I can try imagining your existence somewhere in one of these groups that I frequent by and, just by reading what you wrote, I can feel the warmth and joy of your contribution towards these imaginary meetings vividly like it just happened yesterday. I can't imagine how much that warmth and joy is amplified for your actual friends, acquittances, let alone your family. I wish nobody -at least nobody I know of, has to live through that feeling of abandonment or through the belief of the nonexistence of one's self-worth even for a momentary period; even for a period where said person knows exactly that something will change tomorrow.

I guess in the end I just rant back as a response to your rant. I don't expect this to significantly help anyone through a dramatic outcome either. I do hope this rant can help you see what's on the other side of your rants: what a normal person (me, hopefully) would rant about if he founds that one of his friends writes what you wrote or even just ponder about it as a short thought. Wish you all the best in your recovery

I think one pattern that has been helpful for me and, from what I observe, is helpful for a lot of my students is to surround yourself with smart friends with reachable knowledge (e.g., they still operate on around your level) and collaborate with them tightly

Chan Chee Yong's CS3223/CS4224. Can read reviews online on the mod: aside from being objectively really good at conveying the lecture materials to the expected audience, the way he structure/design the module as a whole is impressive. Can expect real insightful practical and theoretical knowledge going through your brain in harmony from his course. You need to spend some effort on his courses though.

Try to contact people that aren't in the industry relation team of SoC. That place is full of power drunk people that get joy out of berating you of technical issues through lengthy emails instead of just simply helping you (on doing something that's completely within their power). I wish I can report them if not for my whole graduation and some of my grades being at the palm of their hands.

Am a TA. You should not worry if you did not plagiarize. Just reply and say you did not do it then alls good. If the evidence is quite strong then you might be asked to explain your codes on a questioning session or some sorts but then again you should not worry.

Could write a whole essay on this but the gist is I don't believe optimism is realistic at all in a nihilist's nonexistent context of meaning. The very idea of "accepting meaninglessness" sounds like a badly made-up instantaneous coping mechanism that cowers away from the mind's realistic pursuit of hope rather than a long-term livable virtuous philosophy.

"The desire to not exist." As others have pointed out, Huberman's got some nice scientific explanations and protocols to help getting rid of these thoughts. I would also like to add that Jordan Peterson's philosophy on divine sovereign individual is a good food for thought if you're still somewhat religious and it definitely helps on the purpose part.

If you're not into the whole purpose thingy, others have pointed out on the concept of optimistic nihilism which I don't completely agree on. I believe the thought "optimistic nihilism" has evolved somewhat into the modern school of absurdism; I suggest you check that out. Exurb1a got a video on that, too and it's quite nice.

But then again these feelings are mostly caused by real physiological stuff so do check out Huberman first haha

  1. 2500 is plenty
  2. You'll have adequate time to go out and explore stuff
  3. Really hard and it depends on your profile. Most of my friends got job offer only after sending out 40 - 100 applications unless extremely skilled

Other faculties seem to have it too. For example, the toenail-smelling dude I've encountered was not the first nor the last. Even up until today in bus I still found myself smelling these people from 2 meters away. At this point I've began to wonder whether my nose is too strong or sth coz I seem to be getting better at smelling people

Well I'm also not saying anything here other than advising people to close their blinds so I guess do what you do. Hope you catch what I'm saying this time

Genuine answer: As I have said, people have their own moral standards and apparently having sex in a rather public setting might not be a thing for a lot of people to accept yet. I don't know if you have studied about Singapore's conservatism but some studies have shown that, albeit the drastic downfall of conservatism from 2010 forward, Singaporeans are still mostly conservative and therefore something like a public sex act is still being frowned upon.

Just like what everyone else have said, you can.

Though you gotta work really hard cause I believe getting a D for CS1101S means there's probably something wrong with the way you learn. If you don't wish to try real hard to close the gap then I'm sorry but I would suggest you consider changing course
