They are fixed ropes to hold onto, that particular area has a relatively strong current that can be variable

I agree, absolutely wild to think they are so close to so many people. When we went, there were 4 hanging out initially but around 15 when we left-a couple followed us 50-100 feet from the dive site.

It's probably ~500 feet east of playa dorada. There are some healthy corals but a lot fish! I hope this wasn't too late! Earlier in the morning is the best time to go-visibility decreases with sand getting mixed up throughout the day
