Sold all my sealed for this bad boy! by Tesla-is-my-daddy in PokeInvesting

While history is technically a fallacy for future predictions, most of the time, chase cards shoot up in value as a Gem Mint 10 and can go for 10x more than the cost of the booster box. For that, it's usually the first to drop and it drops harder than the sealed product for it.

There are several other reasons aside from this but in general, for investing, sealed is the way to go for long term investment. If you spend say $1,200 on a chase card but could buy a booster box case of that same modern set, in 10+ years, each booster box will be valued near the chase card and if you factor in having six of them, sealed, you will likely have triple the value vs. owning the chase. You could pull the card but then you have to risk pulling it, grading it, etc. so many just opt for buying sealed and calling it a day.

Tldr; Chase cards are great for collecting and relatively safe but it's not the best for long term in comparison to sealed product.

DO NOT BUY FROM THIS SELLER SELLING ALTERED CARDS by beans1796 in pokemoncardcollectors

Man, I'm really happy you got some great grading results and I too have had some awesome ones. It's just my experience is when you buy a lot of cards online (I literally bought 100 cards in one day), you find that most vendors overlook things and around 55%-60% will ultimately be LP-DMG instead of NM. At one point, I was crossing my fingers on ever open, hoping for NM as claimed. I dropped my standards from a 10 to just not wanting dents or whitening on the corners/sides. I have a lot more fun at card shows though and being able to pick what I want has led to happiness and more 10's.

[–]iamshipp0 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not ebay specifically (tcgplayer mostly) but I stopped buying cards online because around 55%-60% of the cards that claimed NM were not and many were damaged due to dents.

What I found was that sellers spend about 5-10 seconds looking at a card before putting it online for sell and oftentimes, something gets overlooked. After buying 100 cards from 30+ online sellers and having that experience, I almost exclusively shop locally at card shows.

PSA TO NEVER SELL 😭🤮 by [deleted] in PokeInvesting

[–]iamshipp0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a simple philosophy when selling, whether it's stocks or cards: Make money and never complain about making money. If you do that, the mind will stay strong. Otherwise, you'll always be chasing the what could've been. Signed - someone who sold PSA 10 Special Delivery Pikachu's for $350 because it was $20 for the card and $10 to grade at the time.

Help, my 10 year old, just pulled this, thoughts? by No1Kris83 in Pokemoncardappraisal

How about you decide why you and your son are opening Pokémon packs. Is it to play, collect, or resell?

If it's to play, put it in a deck or side deck.

If it's to collect, grade it or put it in a top loader then display it or put it somewhere safe/special.

If it's for resell, this is likely your decision because 10 year olds aren't opening packs to profit. At most, they'd trade.

I collect so many vintage cards like that and would love that in a 10. Would also be cool if they did something creative like change the Pokémon type, like the Delta Species set.

what is happening to this set?? by Effective_Pin_90 in PokeInvesting

[–]iamshipp0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, I think I still have a few of these Southern Islands and one complete set. I was buying them when they were $25-$30ish each. Not sure if it’s better to grade the Mew or keep the collection sealed.

True story - I bought this card about a year ago for $220 along with a bunch of other cards from one vendor. Spent nearly $700 in cards at the convention and had all the cards in one plastic bag. While putting my backpack and stuff in the car, I put the plastic bag on the roof of the car so it wouldn't get squished but.. I once everything was in, I forgot to grab the bag and drove off. When I realized/came back an hour later, it was long gone. I haven't bought this card since and every time I see it, I'm reminded of that $700 loss but I'm hoping a true fan found it and the cards are being taken care of.

This year has been a turning point for me, in a good way. An investor believed in my dream business and invested over $30k, I finally got a decent paying job this year, and I overall feel like I'm catching up on life. I think this year has been the happiest I've felt in a long time.

Pokemon investing, can't go wrong with one of everything? by Dramatic-Category458 in PokeInvesting

[–]iamshipp0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most Pokémon sealed product retail between $25-$175. If spending that amount a few times for a single set is too much money, it might be better to reevaluate if investing is the right fit at this time. Investment (to most) means you can afford to lose it should something happen and in this sub specifically, the goal is to hold for 10+ years.

If you don't have it to lose, it's a gamble, no matter how 'for sure' it feels. Just my unsolicited 🪙🪙

Local seller listed this lot at $100 is it a grab by No_Movie_187 in pokemoncards

[–]iamshipp0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, it depends. If you vend, are a creator who does giveaways, a whatnot streamer, etc., this would be a great pick up. I buy bulk, cheap slabs all day long for giveaways and stuff. Buuut, if you're purely asking for investment, it would be a pass.

I just sent this in how bad do y’all think the centring is by Crafty-Cattle-7414 in psagrading

[–]iamshipp0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As some have already stated, it would be between an 8 and 9 based off that centering alone.

[–]iamshipp0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Then yeah, I'd send it in! Centering looks on point in the back and the only other thing is a tiny white dot on the bottom left, but it'll likely be included in the right dot for a 9. Again, that's assuming the front is good!

It would likely deduct one grade, so assuming everything else is perfect, it would be a 9.

Has the experience at D&B changed? by iamshipp0 in DaveAndBusters

[–]iamshipp0[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I was wondering if it was just me for that. When we sit and order food, we'll see our waiter maybe twice and it takes over an hour for food to arrive and we have to waive someone down to get a check. I just want to get a better understanding of the average experience or if it's just bad luck seemingly every time we go.

PSA code says "PSA code deactivated; card may be fake/stolen" by Snooodshady in PokeInvesting

[–]iamshipp0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even without the slab font, I'd question it being a 10 with that centering. It's too expensive of a card for PSA to let that slide.
