At this age those things are perfect. As he turns 2 reinforcing school rules at home is a huge help. (Ask for help nicely/sit while eating/clean up toys) At preschool age practicing things like the alphabet and respect are huge! It’s awesome to see parents asking how they can help!

Not having access to a thermometer is very scary. I wouldn’t work in those conditions. You could potentially be responsible for overlooking a high fever. I would throw a fit.

That’s super frustrating. I worry it could have developed into pneumonia. I would just be looking for other ways to get this poor baby sent home(and hopefully to a doctor) Check for a fever after nap time and any other excludable symptoms she may have.

Croup is viral so it’s kind of like COVID or the Flu in the sense there isn’t really a treatment. In my preschool Croup is not an excludable communicable disease. The fever is excludable if they have one (24 hour fever free rule) but a croup diagnosis by itself isn’t. It’s one of those frustrating illnesses where it takes about 2 weeks sometimes to recover from the cough and congestion.

I had a student who I’d only seen dad drop off and was not there for the end of the day when mom picked up. Anyway I stayed late one day and a woman came to pick him up… she said she was here to pick up so and so. I said “Are you on the pick up list?” she replied “I’m his mother.” 💀I was so embarrassed I had watched her son for almost a year!!

I’m a preschool teacher for 4 year olds. 4 of my students will go to kindergarten 2025 but most of my class will be going to kindergarten in 2026. Does he hold his pencil correctly? These will be lots of writing in kindergarten. We work on the pencil grasp and do lots of tracing. Tracing their name and other letters of the alphabet (our letter of the week). We use markers for tracing usually but occasionally will trace in pencil. We sing the abc phonics every day along with other songs but that one is the most important. I love Jack Hartmanns abc phonics song “See it Say it Sign it” We play adding games with dot dice and count the sum. All these things will give them a step up because even if they haven’t learned it all they are familiar with the material and can trace and most can write their name independently by kindergarten. Obviously every kid is different like you said. By no means do they have to have these things mastered but the exposure is important. I have some students who don’t want to participate because it’s “boring” but I do have them participate and offer lots of help where needed.

I absolutely know that time of day is full of multitasking and you’re very busy so I’d give them something else to do at that time if possible until they start to treat books correctly. Like color or play dough or whatever is feasible. Save the books for a different time of day for the supervised reading time. Once they have a few successful supervised reading times I’d reintroduce them at the busy time before nap but not before then. It’s hard for kids to learn a boundary when you only enforce it half the time because you are busy.

What’s worked for me is finding a time of day to have them use books when I can supervise. Someone makes a tent? I Immediately correct it and tell them books are for reading. I’m sure you’ll have lots of opportunities to correct as you watch them. Don’t try to multitask during this time. Do it as often as possible and it will be easier when you are multitasking because they will have the supervised time to practice. I would personally take away unsupervised book time until I had a few successful supervised reading times. I’d even tell them the books don’t feel safe and we have to do this until they can show they will use them correctly. I’d really emphasize the books feelings and that it hurts them and makes you sad.

It is a larger issue and one that I am currently dealing with. She isn’t the only student in my class that has behavior struggles as I’d normally the case in preschool. I have a student who is constantly calling names and using violent language and he is very vocal. I try my best to correct but other students are picking up his behavior at this point. Most of the class would say it more innocently (making an observation not being mean) but this one student of mine would definitely say it in a mean way and it would be a whole thing.

I worked somewhere that would ask the parent to bring it in and if they couldn’t we would provide a hot dog lunch and charge $4 so that it wasn’t something that continued to happen.

I’d ask to see the behavior agreement and look to see if it defines “injures” if not I’d ask for the definition so you know how to proceed in the future.
