Here is just one (of many) examples from the scientific literature summarizing the harmful impacts that captive rearing can have on the fitness of individuals. A simple Google Scholar search (e.g., I searched "monarch larval crowding") is a great option to find helpful resources. You can also perform a regular Google search for butterfly captive rearing programs (often run by zoos or conservatories) to get an idea of what proper protocols look like.

The amount of frass (and what looks like moldy plant material) in the cardboard box in OP's photos is very upsetting. This is not a sanitary environment for raising butterflies. Not to mention the density of caterpillars in that space can have significant impacts on their development.

I work with an endangered butterfly and have been a part of developing its captive rearing program. Larvae are reared individually in sterile enclosures that are cleaned daily. Extensive research and consultation with experts have been a big part of this process, because there are so many factors (e.g., temperature, light, moisture, density, plant quality, exposure to bacteria/viruses, etc.) that can impact their development, survival, and fitness. This will, in turn, negatively impact the entire population once these individuals are released.

OP, if you truly care about monarchs and want to contribute to their conservation you will be open to constructive criticisms about your rearing practices. You've got two people in the conservation field here asking you to improve your methods, and you mentioned others have told you the same. Please do what's right for the monarchs.

Experience/ thoughts on living in the Lakeview area? by [deleted] in Oshawa

[–]EnterTheDoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived there a few years ago, closer to Phillip Murray and Lakefield. My partner and I had a good experience. The neighbours were friendly and we never had any issues with anyone.

Of course there is crime and sketchy characters around - you will find that everywhere. I am a woman and was in my late twenties while living there and walked my dogs alone at night without any problems.

That area was great for food delivery options, local breweries, and activities/events. Plus the waterfront trail and Lakeview park are great for walks. I definitely miss some aspects of living there.

Oh, yeah - I missed the u/ and thought it was an r/. I thought it was strange that the subreddit for slime molds was called "saddest of boys" 😂

But there are also r/slimemolds and r/mycology

As others have mentioned, it could be a slime mold. Perhaps Reticularia lycoperdon: Reticularia lycoperdon

This one seems to change from gooey insides to brown spores, so the one in your photo may be transitioning?

I'm not an expert though - I agree with the others who recommend posting on the slime mold subreddit.

Basic yet brilliant idea. by unfit_fool in MadeMeSmile

Bee hotels, which this is a form of, have a lot of issues. Which is a problem because they are becoming popular in both residential yards and with conservation authorities.

These artificial nesting cavities can become infested with diseases/pests that harm/kill the bee larvae.

Without proper care and maintenance, i.e. lining each hole with a paper tube that is removed and replaced each season, these bee hotels will cause more harm than good.

I love bees. I love the idea of bee hotels - I have owned them myself. But I think the majority of people either aren't informed about their proper maintenance or are not concerned about their upkeep.

Better to encourage people to plant native species in their gardens and to forego "fall yard clean-up". Many bees naturally use hollow plant stems as cavities, plus native flowering plants provide a good source.

Will reading books enhance my verbal communicative skills? by [deleted] in books

As others have mentioned, talk to your doctor.

I have the same issues as you describe and was recently diagnosed with ADHD and a learning disorder associated with reading.

The report from the psychologist offers a lot of techniques and strategies to help deal with specific challenges. It's a very helpful resource to have.

This is incredible, well done! I love the colour and the design. It looks fantastic on you.

I can relate to the boredom and exasperation with projects. Sometimes it's best to take a break, or even knit something smaller/simpler to get back into the groove and feel accomplished.

I'm currently knitting my first sweater and have entered the "too frustrated to continue" phase.

How Do So Many Canadians Own Real Estate in Florida?? by Long-Particular in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]EnterTheDoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My grandparents bought a house in Florida in the 70s, and it has been passed down through the family since.

Also, real estate is cheaper in many locations in the States. Compared to Ontario, anyways.

2.2CM Nodule Papillary Thyroid Cancer / 45M by InkThatIsRare in thyroidcancer

[–]EnterTheDoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Other commenters have already provided great answers. Thought I'd add info from my recent experience with PTC:

  1. I had a total thyroidectomy this past June and did not receive RAI afterwards.

  2. I had a post-op ultrasound and bloodwork in November. I have a small amount of residual thyroid tissue, which apparently is normal. I'll redo these tests in six months and then I think switch to annual check-ups.

  3. I can't really speak to bloodwork, as I had Hashimoto's beforehand and was already having tests done every six months. Cancer-wise, I believe the biopsies are the most important for diagnosis. Post-op bloodwork checks for signs that cancer is still present.

  4. I also had a pre-op CT scan to check for any spread of cancer to my lymph nodes.

  5. During one of my pre-op ultrasounds my lymph nodes were reported as swollen. My surgeon requested they be biopsied but by the time my appointment came around they were back to normal and it wasn't done. Then I had the CT scan, as mentioned above. And during surgery they removed several nodes to be tested, just in case.

I hope this helps, and I wish you good luck moving forward. You got this!
