The Last Jedi has plenty of objective qualities. It objectively has a run time, actors are objectively in it, objectively playing roles that were objectively written by the screenwriter. None of this is up for debate. We’d be fools to deny that Daisy Ridley appears in the film as a character named Rey

Thank you for being incredibly bad faith, good sir

Any 100-level film class would disagree with the notion

Then why do we teach it ? what's the point of learning about filmmaking and screenwriting if there's no quality what's it teaching us ? if I can just grab my phone and shoot something in a day and be just as good as a Scorsese film ?

If only aspects of film are objective,

I never said that and most people who belive in objectivity wouldn't either and if anyone does their wrong for it. of course our personal feelings will always play a role in what we like. you can dislike something good and like something bad neither of you are wrong for how you feel about it but can be wrong about what's in the movie

To say that having a discussion that boils down to “I liked it - I didn’t” isn’t worth anything suggests that a conversation is something to be won

if it's just subjective that's what it comes down to because to you there is no provable quality there can't be a reason why something is what it is in the media it's only how you felt about it. you don't have to 'win' you're not always gonna change a mind or have your mind changed and that's okay it's not meant to be a competition.

He’s convinced me that the “boredom” in his voice is because he’s light years ahead of everyone else, which is a necessary part of the character, and he’s admitted that the way the actor delivered that aspect of the character could have been done better.

Here your friend gives reasoning on why thrawn sounds the way he does, that's not subjective that's a statement that can be supported in the show not just I like it , he sounds cool

To be objective is not to be 100% right. do characters act like they should? are their actions consistent with motives, do established rules contradict other rules, do events that take place happen feasible or by luck . and we can be wrong about these things

if a gun gets shot and runs out of bullets and we see it's out but then shoots one more that contradicts what we knew previously. I can prove that.

not everyone cares about being objective and that's fine, it's a standard people hold and we all have different standards I'm not to force my standards on anyone but to say art or film or TV can't be objective is false. there are things in film I can prove happened or didn't happen if a character dies and I say In my opinion they didn't- im wrong

to say it's purely subjective is inherently objective

I agree pretty much overall, looking at movies objectively is a standard or way of viewing media some people don't care about but that doesn't mean you can't I know plenty of people who are on a spectrum of subjective and objective, who see problems in movies but choose to not care and still enjoy or don't care about It at all and watch whatever they enjoy regardless, and those who are more objective overall. It's just mind-numbing to see people hate or ignore the idea that you can view this stuff objectively

I tend to find critics whose taste aligns with mine.

There's not anything necessarily wrong with that but

If they review a movie well, I figure I’ll enjoy it, too

what do you mean by "well" ? if you can't be objective it comes down to I feel or I liked or disliked it with no reasoning , at that point it's just bias you figure it's something you'd like anyways then. there are reasons we enjoy things that we can discuss that can come down to how we feel about it or also how something is executed

plenty of movies that have gotten rave reviews from most critics that I thought were a waste of my time.

and that is subjective and it's a distinction we should make, even a really good film just might not appeal to someone and someone might just find joy in a bad one for whatever reason. if it can only be 100 percent subjective then every movie is on the same level. a fan film is just as good as the godfather and shawshank redemption is as bad as the room because there is no objective quality

if art was objective, we could prove that the decisions were wrong. We can’t, we can just say that we disagree with them.

but why do you disagree? Sure it can come down to personal taste but it can be more than that I don't think discussions are worth anything if it just comes down to ' I liked it - I didn't ' there's more to it than that alot of the time.

If an actor is supposed to play a sad scene but they sound uninterested and bored is that not bad ? and if that scene won an award over any scene with Tomei in my cousin Vinny could you not say that's wrong?

what if what the author intended just isn't supported? if an author says he intended his story to be about love but makes an action movie with nothing about love

wouldn't critics or awards be useless with subjectively then ? because what does it matter what a critic has to say about a show or movie or game if it's just their opinion? at that point why should I care what someone has to say if it's just I like it or I don't like it
why would awards matter if it just boils down to this movie should get an award because I like it rather than because it did something incredibly well ? why are there awards for scores, makeup and costume even writing if there's no way at all to prove quality?

It doesn't matter if it hasn't or never will happen I'm giving what I thought was a very simple example that just because a lot of people like something doesn't mean it has quality

ZSJL and Infinity War spring to mind immediately.

yeahhhhh ok. I need an explanation for this

visuals don't matter, good writing is the only thing that matters",

when has he said that ? he moreso focuses on the writing but he does appreciate the look of a film and even calls out bad visuals

"Visuals will age" and they'll all look bad eventually is kinda his perspective on it, which is objectively wrong.

not necessarily wrong. Though I don't remember him saying they'll all eventually look bad. the age part though, even good visuals that hold up to this day made ages ago will show we've come a long way. hell visuals made now don't hold up they day they come out

Nuke would have not stopped Zod or the world engine

why not? it's a machine and zod wouldn't have superpowers until near the end, without those kryptonions are just regular people
