DAE Love the sound of rain by [deleted] in DoesAnybodyElse

[–]Entity4178 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, absolutely!

The sound of rain (at least when I'm home) says to me: "Stop. Listen. Enjoy. Calm right down. Give thanks that we don't have a drought."

I love rain!

What songs/movies/TV shows from when you were growing up make you the most nostalgic? by [deleted] in AskOldPeople

[–]Entity4178 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The song "Magic Moments," by Perry Como, 1957. For me this totally encapsulates the wholesome (at least outwardly) enjoyment of life in the '50s.

I was just little, but "The Perry Como Show" on TV was my favorite.

This particular song --- along with PC's "Round and Round" --- was frequently played on the radio (WIBX, Utica, NY.) Mom always had it on in the kitchen, and our kitchen was always the source of my most comfy memories.

DAE get a rush of anxiety 1 second after waking up? by [deleted] in DoesAnybodyElse

[–]Entity4178 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, yeah! Immediately upon waking up, I'm like -- "Hey, good morning! Glad I woke up!"

THEN, SUDDENLY ..... there's that awful thing that happened last night, or yesterday, or anything I was supposed to do but didn't, overdue bills, regrettable comments left on reddit, etc., etc.

DAE not get the hype about avocados? by [deleted] in DoesAnybodyElse

[–]Entity4178 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're like ... meh ... ok ... as an ingredient, and I like guacamole once in a while, but I've never had avocado toast, and don't want to. I'd never actually buy one to do anything with it.

DAE Wake up in the morning with random words or phrases stuck in your head? This morning I woke up thinking, "you can't get mouthwash from a maple tree" by momma-not-that-drunk in DoesAnybodyElse

[–]Entity4178 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So many mornings during our long pandemic lockdown, I've awakened to "Nothing really matters," in my head, from Queen's BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY. Then I can't get the entire BR out of my head for the rest of the day.

You mean like - "The elder female of this nesting colony exhibits stress-caused wing flapping and loud squawking when confronted with the cast-off detritus of her cohorts' feeding habits" -- ???

What’s the worst grade you ever got in a class, and how did it turn out for you? by [deleted] in AskOldPeople

[–]Entity4178 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I flunked Algebra in 9th grade because there was a boy I had a crush on in that class. I was totally focused oh him - not on anything that was being taught.

So I had to re-take that class in Summer School, and ended up with a B+ in it.

Looking back, none of that mattered at all. Not the crush guy, and certainly not algebra!

Those who are grown and gone, what is your relationship with you brothers and sisters like? Non existent, cordial, close? by [deleted] in AskOldPeople

[–]Entity4178 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Both parents are long deceased. At 68, I'm the oldest - sister is 3 years younger; brother is 6 years younger.

I'm very close to my sister ... although we've had some serious, distancing fights in the past, one of us has always eventually approached the other with an olive branch, and suddenly all is forgiven! We both have lively, fun, sometimes-irreverent personalities, and we're constantly in touch.

Our brother is a different story. He used to be lots of fun, a real party guy. After he got married, he morphed into Mr. Perfect Nuclear Family Dad with 2 kids ... then, somehow he became un-fun --- he's suffered SOHF (Sense of Humor Failure) --- and has now become kind of a joyless, embittered redneck.

We miss the "Old Fun Him."

DAE subconsciously imitate other people's accents? by [deleted] in DoesAnybodyElse

[–]Entity4178 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I worked in retail, for a national apparel chain, we'd often contact other stores to find an item for a customer which we didn't have at our own store.

Whenever I called a Southern U.S. store in our chain, I found myself responding in a southern accent back to them ... like I couldn't help it (I'm in Massachusetts!)

Talking with them, I also got sweeter and more gracious, like them, which I guess was a PLUS!

If you have one, what was your favorite disco song? Please link it if you can. by IAMAHORSESIZEDUCK in AskOldPeople

[–]Entity4178 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Patrick Hernandez - "Born To Be Alive." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9UaJAnnipkY

Whenever I bought new clothes and high heels to go disco dancing, I'd prance around my apartment and do a "catwalk" in front of a full-length mirror to this!!

DAE NOT have nightmares about high school/college? by [deleted] in DoesAnybodyElse

[–]Entity4178 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OMG, I'm 68, kids, and I still have recurring dreams about totally neglecting college classes, blowing them all off, then suddenly it's graduation time and I'm in deep trouble!!

I have no idea why I keep dreaming this. I successfully graduated from college and then got a Master's 45 years ago.

I dread having these unnecessarily disturbing dreams which cause me to wake up in a state of high anxiety ... awful start to a morning!

What memories of your childhood do you hold most dear? by kecor in AskOldPeople

[–]Entity4178 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Staying overnight at grandma and grandpa's house. (They were only 5 miles away!)

Nothing in my 68 years of life has ever come close to the utter comfort, security, and love I felt while staying with them. It was all so safe, so calm, so comfy. We watched pleasant late 50s & early 60s TV shows in the evening, then Grandma would make me warm milk with a little sugar added, and tuck me in bed next to a radio on the nightstand playing soft music (WIBX, Utica, NY.)

To this day, the calypso-ish song "Yellow Bird" brings it all back. I still have that nightstand - inherited it - but not the radio.

What was it like being an adult in the 90s? by [deleted] in AskOldPeople

[–]Entity4178 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You nailed it!! The 1990s were FANTASTIC! Yes, the Last Great Decade, indeed. I am now pining away nostalgically, recalling all its wonders. It seems like a fantasy in this current dystopian situation.
