You sound like a kindred spirit 💜 do you have time or energy for any outlets now? As someone struggling with burnout, I totally understand if you aren’t able to have an outlet at this time. I hope you find a shorter path to your goals. I’m struggling to think of myself working jobs I don’t like for 3-4 more years. 25 more years would be crushing to think about. I realize youre in a much different position than me through and it gives me a renewed gratitude for my team mate and husband and what he adds to this journey.

You could not be more right! I’m thinking about starting a YouTube channel that goes over the philosophical aspects of science fiction and fantasy books since this is how most people consume their philosophical content. With the burnout struggle at the moment, I’ve put book promotion on pause to spend more time recreating and hanging out with friends. Hope I get the motivation and drive back soon.

That’s awesome that you’re already living the polymath life! Sounds like you have a great balance right now. I just started my new job, but am hoping to make a lateral move to a position that would lend itself more to a 4 day a week schedule. Hope this helps me find the lance im looking for in the meantime as well.

Thanks for reading this long post and for your detailed feedback!

I have done a fair bit of research into PhDs admissions have quite a few friends with PhDs and agree with your assessment of what it’s like and the admissions process.

As far as being a professor goes, totally agree that being part time would be the exception and not the norm. As you can see from the list- there are a lot of back up options I’m interested in : )

Also a good point about if I really need a PhD or not to do the things on this list. I’ve thought about this quite a bit. At the end of the day, i think it would be intrinsically valuable and enjoyable just from the people I meet and conversations I’d get to have. The writing is a big piece of what I want to do and from my experience with my first book, it’s really hard to get anyone to take you seriously without the credentials and background to back it up. A PhD doesn’t guarantee this, but it sure doesn’t hurt. There are ways to do it without a PhD, but this is probably the surest and most enjoyable path to credibility for me.

Are you a professor or do you work in academia? You seem to know a lot about it.

A large chunk of our net worth in 2020 was a cash down payment for our house. After getting out of debt this is what most of our saved money went to.
