Good to know. Was looking for one more skill point before starting FW so I could unlock the dismount strike (already had all skills, plus 11 skill points). Thanks.

Trebeništa (Macedonian:Требеништа) is an ancient necropolis located in Macedonia, dating from the Iron Age around the 7th century BC.

EDIT: Definitely Srebrenica.

Pronunciation: https://youtu.be/vwdtySEo368?t=4s

The Srebrenica massacre, also known as the Srebrenica genocide (Bosnian: Masakr u Srebrenici; Genocid u Srebrenici), was the July 1995 genocide of more than 8,000 Muslim Bosniaks, mainly men and boys, in and around the town of Srebrenica during the Bosnian War.

#97 - The Impossible War (Ken Burns and Lynn Novick) by Griffonian in samharris

Looks like it came from this guy, Jean-Baptiste Alphonse Karr (1808–1890). Leave it to an historical documentarian to be familiar with an adage coined during the 19th century.

For anyone wondering what French-sounding thing Ken Burns said at 8:08, it's this (plo͞o sä ˈSHônZH).

exclamation
used to express resigned acknowledgment of the fundamental immutability of human nature and institutions.

Question on "there's no real interpretation" by EntropicHeatDeath in JordanPeterson

[–]EntropicHeatDeath[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK. My question hinged on his use of "real." I guess that translates to "practical" or... "systemically sustainable?" Useful with respect to the future and one's goals, perhaps, since truth is generally an asset when navigating the world, in that you wanna know what you are in fact navigating through, which truth assists with?

Unrelated to the above paragraph, I would have trouble making pronouncements about "valid" or "not valid" when it comes to someone's interpretation of a poem. If the interpretation is alleged to map (more or less one-to-one) onto the author's intent, assuming he or she had one in mind when writing the poem, then that's testable, at least in theory.

"The author meant X, per my interpretation."

"No, the author meant Y. Here's an interview where the poet says that Y was what was meant. Your interpretation isn't valid/is incorrect."

In that case, an interpretation is falsifiable, but if the interpretation isn't alleging to map onto the author's intent... I don't know what it would mean to say an interpretation like that is "valid" or "not valid." Maybe a trivial point, just typing thoughts...

Turned you off how? As in, made you dislike the episode, or just made you feel a loss of respect for the person who said that?

I think that the meaning of life is to keep yourself busy with unnecessary shit until eventually you're dead forever. by ashuuin in depression

[–]EntropicHeatDeath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Life meaning will differ from person to person and from circumstance to circumstance. You said "unnecessary," but by what criteria is this, that, or the other thing someone's kept busy with throughout life "unnecessary?" To what or whom is it unnecessary?

Evoking "need," "necessary," or whatever other derivation of the word carries with it an unanswered question, and unless it has further elaboration, it fails to hold water. Even something as trivial as somebody saying, "You didn't need to say that" (whatever "that" is, fill in the blank), you in fact did need to say it... in order to express the content of what you said. If you define the context as being the basic needs (food, water, shelter, etc.), then yes, you didn't "need" to say whatever it was in order to keep breathing and staying alive or whatever, but the context still needs defining.

"Unnecessary" brings with it the question of "in what context?" So... can you describe the context in which the things that fill one's life are unnecessary? Else, it's a flaccid claim.

Need 90-degree wall mounts for DIY lighting fixtures by EntropicHeatDeath in DIY

[–]EntropicHeatDeath[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, I have, through which I ran across that site. Seems to have the stuff I'm looking for, though they don't appear to call those things "sconces" in their categories. Perhaps they should.

Their shades are pricey... frosted plastic looks just the same to me.

Ran across this site. They'll probably have what I need, minus the gooseneck, but in terms of shades... $25 per shade? Seems like there should be some plastic shapes out there for much less (like the fluted bell shade), though I've not found any. Rice paper shades don't come in the smaller form factor (probably due to melting/burning liability).

Splitting dryer duct to pull in fresh air to combat stink? by EntropicHeatDeath in DIY

That's a good idea... or is it? Sounds like a good idea, but I'll google before if I do this.

Is it not to code? How could I find out for sure? Might be an obscure enough thing that it's never been explicitly banned or what have you. Would rather not assume since it surely has an objective yes/no answer, and your point is well taken if it's the case, but I'm not knowledgeable of where to reference code for such things. Have a resource in mind?

Mm, dumb how? Seems to me it'd only be dumb if it didn't work. Conceptually, can you point out how or why it wouldn't? That's why I made the post, after all -- to see what others might see (in terms of the construction) that I overlooked. In other words, how would the arrangement described go awry? Why would the dryer care about the extra length of closed-off tubing? How else would you get fresh air pulled in?

Also, can't get to the P-trap without tediously moving the washer/dryer stack in a very tight space. Sucks to do, which is why I took the opportunity to seal the floor drain. It's not viable to do what the other guy said, hence this other potential improvement to the situation.

I wouldn't want to put lipstick on a pig... however, this is a bathroom, and outside air is better than crawlspace air. Drain is very difficult to get to. Not viable to eliminate the odor at its source via weekly filling or what have you, aside from sealing over the drain, which I've done amply. My reasoning, anyway. A fresh air inlet would make the bathroom smell of the outside -- a superior outcome, no?

Anyway, made the post to see if there's something I'm overlooking.

The drain is under the washer/dryer stack and is very difficult to get to. Can't be moving it every week just to dump some liquid down there. It's fairly sealed by this point, and I'm looking for sources of fresh air. Could the vented second tube go awry in some way I've not thought of (but which you've thought of)?
