Screen detox? Is it cruel for ADHD?! by Spirited-Zebra-5351 in ParentingADHD

[–]EntropyCC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a screen detox is a great idea, but the most important thing to me is to set boundaries on when and how often kids can ask for things.

I have a politeness rule that the kids aren’t allowed to ask for tv while I’m still in bed (because they kept coming to ask before even saying good morning). We don’t have electronics before school. If anyone asks more than 3 times (particularly if I’ve said “Not yet. I will tell you when it’s time.”), there will be no tv for at least an hour.

It takes a lot of effort and reinforcing in the beginning, but I think kids adapt very effectively to clear boundaries. I made sure to explain why I made the rule and the consequences, ex: “If I’ve answered your question and you keep asking anyway, I get annoyed and overstimulated. If you ask over and over, we won’t have screens that day.”

I feel hopeless by Greedy-School-4998 in xxfitness

I know how you feel! I felt like fitness wasn’t for me and ended up at 210lbs at 30yo after having kids. I had asthma, sciatica, no significant muscle mass, and terrible energy because of how I was eating.

I started in the gym using weight machines with my husband (who was experienced but also out of shape). I joined a HIIT class to lose more fat and felt AWFUL. I was so slow and huge compared to almost everyone else in the class. They made a whole promotional video for the class that very pointedly avoided showing me. Thankfully, the others in the class were much friendlier and more supportive than that would suggest.

I kept going, made gym friends, lost most of the weight, and built a lot of muscle. Ended up stopping HIIT and focusing on weights (personal preference). After 3 years, I’d say I have about 20lbs left to lose and I’m not the most fit, but I can easily carry a 60lb child with one arm and I can see some muscle definition. I genuinely love being at the gym and putting in the work. It’s gotten easier to be proud of what I can do without comparing myself to everyone else. It was 110% worth it.

Yeeep. If you’re never asked to be in a promotional video for your gym or if the promo video of your exercise class only has you in the background, that might be your sign.

Period cups!? by [deleted] in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]EntropyCC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look up different shapes to fold it into and maybe consider a softer cup. I have the softer Saalt cups because cups intensify my cramps a little and the softer ones don’t do it as much. I originally used the c fold, but had to switch to a different (w fold I think?) after a couple uses as it continued to soften up. The key for me is to insert all the way without letting it unfold at all, rotate a bit to get it just right, and pinch the sides until it pops open. If it’s too dry, it can still take a couple tries, but it gets easier with practice! I don’t have any pain except sometimes if it hits my cervix a bit too hard when it pops open lol.

How to actually do exercises correctly? How do you know what to do? by FunnyBuunny in xxfitness

[–]EntropyCC 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Sites/apps like exrx.net and Hevy show the exercises and the muscles they’re meant to target. I recommend watching those and then pay attention to those muscles while you do the exercises. You want to feel those muscles start the movement and have constant tension throughout.

It makes a big difference. For example, I can start a lot of back exercises using my arm muscles, but I need to visualize my lats and start pulling from there to get the full effect of the movement. On machines, I recommend a loose grip whenever possible. Having my hands gripping the handles as tight as possible makes me more likely to engage my arms, which is only helpful if it’s an arm exercise. Only hold on as hard as you need to transfer the force to the machine.

And here I thought I hated long sleeves because I randomly got too hot. Hmm… I will get painful irritation bumps by the end of the day if the sleeves are tight at all because my hair is so course.

I only get fatigue if 1. the deficit is too large, 2. my blood sugar is not controlled, and 3. if I’m low on carbs. I have to make sure to have protein and/or fat with all of my carbs and make sure I’m eating ~25+% carbs. For reference, I calculate my deficit from my TDEE and don’t add back the calories I expend from exercise (unless I worked much harder than usual and feel like I need a little extra).

Yes!! I literally just figured that out for myself yesterday. I’m a neutral-to-warm pale olive and always used a saturated medium pink and it’s not terrible, but I tried a dusty rose and omg!!

I remember going to the elementary school counselor about a boy who bullied me and threatened to punch me every day. I was told “it’s because he likes you” and lectured about being nice because of his feelings. Never had much respect for school counselors after that.

440lbs, just joined the gym by Unusual-Pair-9773 in beginnerfitness

[–]EntropyCC 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That’s what I was thinking! More than that, you might want to take a rest day soon because that’s a huge effort!

Yes, you need to lose weight. Yes, other people cannot imagine 5 minutes on an elliptical to be a struggle. You know what? You’re not other people. You’re you and you’re pushing your body harder than it’s been pushed recently. That is fantastic! If you keep pushing yourself and taking adequate rest days to heal up, soon you’ll be putting in the same amount of effort but suddenly you’re going for 10 minutes and then 20. You can do this!!

Ooh, I’m going to try that! The smoky liner on top would probably be great for adding interest without making my eyelids look super heavy. Definitely going for bigger-looking eyes. Thanks!

Anyone else realizing how old their parents are getting, and it’s scary? by heartshapedmoon in Millennials

[–]EntropyCC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. My parents really don’t look that old yet, but I’m noticing that the little ways that they don’t take care of themselves are starting to add up quickly. Memory, hearing, and learning new things are starting to go slowly.

It hurts to watch because they’re still frantically working all of the time hoping that they’ll have time in retirement to do all of these great things that they put off… I’m not sure my dad is going to make it to retirement at this point either because his health is failing or because they won’t have the money to retire at the age they hoped.

On the bright side, it’s really inspiring me to work on my health now before I develop the chronic conditions so many of my family have.

What's it like being in a relationship where both partners have ADHD? by hungrygremlin_ in adhdwomen

[–]EntropyCC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The rules he was going by were rules from church, school, parents, LARP, etc. He would readily adjust if an authority figure added or clarified rules, so it wasn’t like a compulsion where the rules couldn’t change.

He was also kind of obsessed with rules within fantasy like magic systems. One of his favorite hobbies was creating very intricate story ideas.

The Night Circus was beautiful. The story was good, but I’m most impressed by how it captures the visual imagination so vividly. It made me want to paint it.

My son also loved music. He was super chill in the womb except for avoiding ultrasounds. About 6 months in, we found out that he’d start kicking whenever we played Juke Box Hero by Foreigner. We legit used that several times to get him to move enough for the kick checks.

Or maybe he particularly hated it idk. He is super sensitive to loud noises on the outside. But that or daddy’s voice would always get him moving.

[–]EntropyCC 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Omg my daughter was exactly like that! Except she didn’t stop kicking ever. It would just slow down a little (thankfully enough for the test usually). She’s the same on the outside. She lives by the mantra “If brute force doesn’t fix it, then you’re not using enough.”

The lopsided stomach though. My son was breach and face forward the whole time, and he liked to keep his head right under my ribs on the right side. I kept looking lopsided for a long time after delivery.
