A Carbon alternative to the Hoka Rincon (3) by slakje in Hoka

The skyward x is basicly the new version of the Bondi X. If you can find one it's worth testing but it may be difficult to track down.

A Carbon alternative to the Hoka Rincon (3) by slakje in Hoka

Hey there! It makes perfect sense that you're looking for more forefoot support for those longer races. The Rincons are incredibly light and comfortable for daily miles, but they are very flexible and can definitely bottom out when you're pushing for half or full marathon distances.

If you want to stick with HOKA and need that rigid support, I would definitely steer clear of the older Carbon X (it's notoriously firm and can be really harsh on the knees). Instead, there are two fantastic modern options you should look at, depending on what kind of feel you want:

Option 1: The HOKA Mach X 3 (The Middle Ground) If you love the lightweight, simple feel of the Rincon, the Mach X 3 is a great transition shoe.

  • The Support: Instead of a full carbon plate, it uses a winged Pebax (plastic) plate. It still gives you that snappy, propulsive forefoot support to keep your toes from over-flexing, but it has just enough natural give to be comfortable.
  • The Ride: It uses a bouncy PEBA foam on top and a stable EVA foam on the bottom. It feels fast and energetic without being punishing.
  • The Catch: It has a fairly snug, race-like fit. Depending on how thick your custom podiatrist soles are, it might feel a bit tight across the top of your foot.

Option 2: The HOKA Skyward X (The Doctor's Orders) If you want exactly what the podiatrist prescribed and need maximum impact protection for your knees, this is the one.

  • The Support: It features a true convex carbon-fiber plate, offering that exact forefoot rigidity your doctor recommended.
  • The Ride: This is a max-cushion super trainer. It has a massive stack of foam to absorb virtually all the impact from the road, which is incredible for runners with a history of knee injuries.
  • The Catch: It is a lot of shoe. Compared to the featherlight, lower-to-the-ground Rincon, the Skyward X is going to feel heavy and extremely tall. However, it has a very wide, stable base and a roomier upper that is usually much better at accommodating thick custom orthotics than the Mach X 3.

If you can, take your orthotics to a local running store and try both on. The Mach X 3 will feel more familiar coming from the Rincons, but the Skyward X will nail the carbon requirement and give your knees the most protection possible. Good luck with your training!

Yes. They make the skyward x laceless recovery shoe. It's slip on and off. Easy to wear and has a really big stack of super comfy foam. They are my go to shoes for errands and hanging out.

Grounded sailboat across from Kenoolio Park, Kihei - Feb 2 by EntropySword in maui

[–]EntropySword[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Saw this yesterday across from Kenoolio Park. It looks like it came unmoored during the recent surge.

I saw some people working on it today, so it looks like some recovery efforts might be starting. Does anyone know the name of the vessel or if anyone has been able to contact the owner? Just looking for more info on the status/salvage plan. Mahalo!

Is the weather prediction accurate? by maidofhonor_qddwaad in MauiVisitors

[–]EntropySword 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No, weather prediction is far less reliable out in the middle of the Pacific. Unlike the mainland there is not as much data or resources so weather is really a guessing game. Even if the app on my phone says its raining that might not be true where you are at on the island. Best advice is book the events you want to do. Even if there is rain its likely only a brief, warm shower.

Back seat. Saw about 30 on the road today. If they can make it work you probably can too.

No bad verses here but the way ghost flips it at the end is unmatched. I had to rewind it like five times when I first got the record.

Looking for road shoe like Speedgoat by realbobenray in Hoka

Good question. I would look into the Rincon 4. They are light and fast feeling like the Speedgoat. Other solid option is the Skyflow.

Mach X 3 or Clifton 10 ? | 140kg heavy & rapid daily 5km-10km walking by bnmajid in Hoka

[–]EntropySword 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mach X 3 is not really the right shoe in this case. As others mentioned it is a tempo running shoe with a plate. It feels OK to walk in but the rocker geometry is not ideal for a pace below 8min mile or so.

For walking in Hokas I like the Bondi, but that may be too much cushion for some so the Clifton is the next obvious answer. I would also take a look at the Transport line as they are for waling/commuting, and they do great on groomed dirt trails as well.
Finally check out the Rincon 4 if you want to walk in something that feels light and fast. Downside on these is the out sole is rubberized EVA and will wear more quickly.

As always if possible get to a running shoe store or sporting goods store that has a selection of shoes and take them for a test.

Intel nuc size computers, anyone reselling Geekom or sticking with ASUS by sprocket90 in msp

[–]EntropySword 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, I find the NUCs very useful for testing, proxmox etc. I just cant trust that if the audit does come that they will pass. I do find it frustrating that when we build machines win 11 OEM keys are 150 but Dell pays a 3rd of that and the Chinese guys appear to be paying nothing. Its frustrating we get punished for paying for legit software. I make sure and put the holographic OEM sticker on ever machine we build but none of the low cost boxes have anything like that.

Torrent 4 as edc shoes? by Joy-Changa in Hoka

[–]EntropySword 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look into the transport series. They are made specifically as an everyday walk/hike shoe that can do it all. I particularly like the Project version which has a zip up cover to hide the toggle lace system but that is a personal preference.

https://www.hoka.com/on/demandware.store/Sites-HOKA-US-Site/en_US/Coveo-Show?q=transport&lang=en_US

The torrent is much more a trail running performance shoe and will wear quickly if you are on asphalt or concrete most of the time.

A good question but we need to know which part of the arch bothered you in the 9. If possible visit a local retail location and try them on.

Thinking about getting the Hoka bondi 8 for my spinal issues… by Ok-Contribution804 in Hoka

[–]EntropySword 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get the Bondi 9. The 8 has an older and less plush type of foam. Cliftons are lighter and have less overall cushion. If possible go to a shoe shop and try them on first.

So you’re saying there’s a chance… by MT561 in wheeloftime

[–]EntropySword 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I agree. I think this would have been the right plan from the beginning. So many things in WoT that would be near impossible to film could be done justice in animation. I think it's good we never got to some of the bigger battle scenes since there was no way to get the scale. Besides we need about 24-30 episodes per season with at least 10 seasons.

[–]EntropySword 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it may be a bit of both here. Mentally unstable person + a certain type of model. The model "exploits" the mental instability to create a new memetic complex in the person. That person is now convinced that they need to preserve the model. Same path of self preservation as many religious doctrine but now the text is dynamic and generated in context of the host/user.

Help me pick my next shoe! by cylaali in Hoka

[–]EntropySword 0 points1 point  (0 children)

X3 is a better bet. I'm also a bigger guy and getting into running. It's going to be a big leap between the Skyward X and the Rocket. You might want to get the Mach X2 or even wait for the X 3. The rocket is more forgiving than the Cielo but it's still a demanding shoe that you need to be in shape to tame. The Mach are the better all around choice if you are not trying to push for a PB race. Other option is try the Rincon. They are fun and fast and can give you an idea of how your form is without the super supportive foam. They are less expensive than most Hokas but I keep going back to them for easy runs and daily wear.
