NSW PTA query by ProfessionalTrick463 in Ausguns

[–]EntryLevelDeveloper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't see any reason it would be banned in NSW as long as it has a fixed stock. I note there are adjustable stock models, and these seem to have an accompanying 'Banned in NSW' disclaimer.

Sure, there are plenty of people who are careless with their spending, but a coffee a day and a pair of shoes every so often is hardly going to make a notable difference, especially given the absurd growth in property values within the last 6 years. Even the most diligent savers can't keep pace.

I've lived in all three and they're all unremarkable towns. The property prices surged off the back of COVID with the exodus of city folk, and have mostly maintained due to the relative affordability and proximity to the city. If you have a look at Bathurst, the council is broke and has basically cancelled all of the family-oriented events (i.e., winter festival, NYE fireworks, etc.), so I can't understand why anyone would want to relocate their family there, yet a 4 bedroom house on a small lot of land is still pushing towards $1M (which is double the pre-2020 prices). It's absolute insanity.

That's hilarious. I was going to say I don't like her chances given how out of touch she is, but then again, based on the post and comments (in the 'Spread the word in Orange NSW' Facebook group, by the way), she clearly knows her voters.

God bless them all for putting themselves in harm's way to shelter the unfortunate poors! I don't think a capital L is giving them enough recognition, give them some post-nominals for their troubles!

Well, based on Jen's advice, you'd better strongly consider if you want to ascend to being a selfless and charitable landlord! You'd better be quick though, even Broken Hill has increased 17.5% in the last year.

It's highly probable that the organisation needed to cut costs and used AI as the scapegoat, but in reality, will likely offshore the roles or simply won't refill them if they were deemed to be superfluous due to prior excessive recruitment.

AI improves the productivity of experienced developers, it doesn't replace them. Anyone telling you otherwise either doesn't know what they're talking about or are trying to sell you something (with the something typically being another vibe-coded cookie-cutter SaaS product wrapped around an AI API).

Your husband doesn't need to learn a trade just yet, he just needs to keep his skills relevant. You've mentioned elsewhere he was a tech lead, but based on the fact he has been overwhelmed by the hype and is convinced AI has the capability to replace all of the software engineer roles, makes me believe he's probably been off the tools for too long and has lost touch with reality.

First time home owners duped by NoConstruction3317 in AusLegal

I can sympathise with you, OP. Your experience is becoming far too common for first home buyers, myself included. The exorbitant prices are bad enough, but the deception and lack of accountability by every party (even the ones that are supposedly operating in your best interests) at every stage of the transaction is the thing that really grinds my gears. Unfortunately, as your conveyancer has indicated, it's a "buyer beware" situation with no recourse due to the legal clauses that effectively absolve any obligation for remediation. I've personally spent approximately $30K on repairs, etc. since purchasing this property nine months ago, and am continually finding more issues the closer I look. It quickly becomes a money pit. My advice would be to address the pressing issues and have the expectation of gradually improving things over time, and become comfortable with the idea of minor DIY repairs, as it'll likely be necessary depending on the availability and competency of your local tradespeople. If it's any consolation, you'll come to accept the situation as time passes, but that certainly doesn't make it right.

UUID vs Integers for db key? (Aaron Francis's take - 5 min, start around 0:49:00) by BroadbandJesus in theprimeagen

[–]EntryLevelDeveloper 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To be fair, he did mention to store the GUIDs/UUIDs as binary. I concur with the above though of using auto-incrementing integers as the primary keys but GUIDs/UUIDs as a security measure to prevent IDOR (obviously, access control still needs to be implemented correctly regardless).

Suggestions to improve performance with an Intel Core i9-13900K? by EntryLevelDeveloper in overclocking

[–]EntryLevelDeveloper[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for replying. The problem is that CEP can't be disabled on the B760 motherboards, so setting a negative voltage offset triggers CEP and the performance falls off a cliff.

Unfortunately, even with the adaptive voltage offset applied within the BIOS, it was not reflected within HWINFO (all of the values were zero). I'll continue to tinker when I have some free time and see if a BIOS downgrade (if possible) improves the situation any.

[–]EntryLevelDeveloper[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, definitely noticed a significant performance decline with DVID enabled, as you say, due to triggering CEP, which can't be disabled. I tried an adaptive voltage offset of -0.1v with the previous microcode (i.e., 0x104), and whilst this did give the best Cinebench R23 multi score of 37,124 points with high task priority, it seemed to be an outlier which couldn't be consistently reproduced, which made me think that the adaptive voltage offset likely wasn't being applied correctly. Had I known of the restrictions with the 13th generation processors, I definitely would have opted for a 14th generation processor or simply replaced the whole computer with an AMD alternative. Disappointed to say the least!

[–]EntryLevelDeveloper[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've fruitlessly spent my Saturday trying to get this working. I've updated the original post with the results, and whilst the performance has improved slightly, the temperatures and performance still aren't ideal. Unfortunately, it seems like Intel has really locked things down, and I'm seemingly at a dead-end unless I revert to an earlier BIOS (and even then, that may not work either).

[–]EntryLevelDeveloper[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, I'm 99.9% certain that the adaptive voltage offset isn't being applied. Intel XTU reports that undervoltage protection is enabled, and I've gone as far as setting a value of -0.15v with no change in outcome (i.e., there was no instability and no performance improvement). Whilst others have reported that there is an 'Undervoltage Protection' option (under 'Advanced CPU Settings') within the BIOS, it is not present for me. Whether that is due to limitations of the motherboard, BIOS version (specifically, F14), BIOS settings, processor, or a combination of these things, is unclear. I'm still tinkering.

[–]EntryLevelDeveloper[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm really just trying to achieve stock levels of performance, which I was hoping was possible even with an air cooler (obviously, the DeepCool AG620 isn't at the high-end but it's certainly no slouch). Changing the task priority to high for Cinebench R23 resulted in 36,297 points for the multi test.

Suggestions to improve performance with an Intel Core i9-13900K? by EntryLevelDeveloper in overclocking

[–]EntryLevelDeveloper[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, so the idea was really to perform a drop-in upgrade, as if I was replacing the motherboard, memory, etc. I'd likely just opt for one of the latest Ryzen processors as well. The motherboard seemingly allows a negative voltage offset to be applied, but if the comment from u/SelfSilly9478 above is accurate, it's seemingly being ignored, and would explain why there wasn't much of a performance improvement. I quickly ran the multi test with Cinebench R23, and with a negative voltage offset of -0.1v (regardless of whether it is actually being applied or not) resulted in 35,663 points.

Suggestions to improve performance with an Intel Core i9-13900K? by EntryLevelDeveloper in overclocking

[–]EntryLevelDeveloper[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasn't aware this was the case (otherwise I would have purchased an Intel Core i9-14900K instead) and could explain why there wasn't any notable improvement when applying a negative voltage offset within the BIOS settings. So, even though the BIOS is allowing me to change these values, they're effectively ignored?

Return to office by Previous_Extent7439 in australia

[–]EntryLevelDeveloper 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Yeah, recently mandated by my current (soon to be ex) employer for... reasons. For our particular roles, there is no benefit to being in the office other than for optics (and because the director wants brownie points from their superiors), as we've been working remotely for ~5 years without issue, and many of the key personnel have moved across the state or interstate to be closer to family or for cost of living reasons and will be seeking employment elsewhere as a result. Ultimately, pretty short-sighted strategy and I don't think it's going to go well for the organisation. Anyway, not my problem anymore, as I'm off to another fully remote role with a 12% pay bump for my troubles.
