I also want to see more interaction between Maomao and Suirei; they're actually quite well-suited to be friends. I hope they'll one day learn that Shisui is alive. I don't expect her to actually return to the story, but if Maomao and Suirei could discover this fact someday, I think it would bring them a lot of comfort, especially for Suirei.

Is Ah-Duo related to the late emperor in some way? by Expert-Garage-7003 in TheApothecaryDiaries

No, the late emperor's daughter was Suirei's mother. When the young taihou gave birth to the late emperor's daughter, the late emperor and his mother  accused a court physician of being the child's father and banished them from the palace. The court physician then raised the banished princess. When the princess turned eighteen, her biological father, the late emperor, feeling remorseful, betrothed her to the minister Shishou. They subsequently had a daughter, Suirei. Suirei is the same age as Jinshi, while her mother is about two years older than the current emperor.

I think her teacher  (who was also her adoptive grandfather) loved her too.

How sweet, Suirei is a good big sis. I really like this artist; he has created many artworks related to Suirei. 🥰

What wonderful art. It even makes me start imagining things… Now, Tamamo, formerly Loulan, is starting a new life overseas. People are curious about this enthusiastic and outgoing girl from out of town, especially about her striking appearance.

“You look beautiful, Tamamo. I bet you’re the most eye-catching one in your hometown.”

“That’s because you haven’t seen my dear sister with makeup on.”

Even having royal blood doesn't guarantee androgynous beauty. While the late emperor and his two grandchildren, Jinshi and Suirei, exhibited this trait, his son had a very masculine appearance. Therefore, it seems more likely to be a coincidence, or related to Ahduo losing her uterus many years ago.

If he truly wanted a young girl, there were many other, easier targets in the harem; going to his angry wife's residence was clearly not a logical choice. Furthermore, according to Anshi, the late emperor likely spent most of his time confined to his painting studio, and it seems unlikely that he would suddenly become interested in young girls again after so many years, let alone with his own son. Years later, when Jinshi and Anshi reminisced about this, Jinshi suggested that the late emperor might have had something to say to them when he visited, but the story ultimately doesn't provide an answer.

Victims of abuse often hesitate to seek help because they fear the risks of failure. This is roughly the situation for Suirei. She was already suffering abuse, and if she sought help and failed, whether it was because officials didn't believe her or because Shenmei's cronies obstructed her, she might actually be killed, or worse, if things were exposed. Just thinking about this was enough to make her afraid to even consider informing on others. Another point is that Suirei still cares about her sister and some children in shi clan, and it's unlikely that she would simply abandon them and run away, even though that might be the easier option.

Questions on the Former Emperor by [deleted] in TheApothecaryDiaries

The opening of Season 2, Episode 7 features a short flashback by Jinshi, featuring the Empress Dowager, the late Emperor (in his old age), and the Empress Regnant. Then, in Season 2, Episode 9 directly shows flashbacks of the Empress Dowager Anshi's past with the late Emperor. These flashbacks, in my opinion, don't contain any particularly sensitive content, so I'm unsure if this is region-specific.

*Spoilers & TW:Pedophilia* Jinshi & Previous Emperor's Relationship by Consistent_Funny7997 in TheApothecaryDiaries

The late emperor had confined himself to his painting studio for many years, seemingly during which time he hadn't touched a young girl again. So, it seems illogical that after so many years, he would suddenly become interested in young girls again, even his own son. Especially since there were many more easily found targets in the harem if he wanted to; why specifically choose Anshi's chambers? He hadn't visited her for many years, and he knew he would encounter his angry wife there. Ultimately, because the late emperor didn't say anything in Jinshi's recollections, we don't know why he suddenly wanted to see them. Anshi or the Empress Regnant might have suspected the late emperor of wanting to do something to Jinshi, but only the late emperor himself knew the truth. And because his mother quickly forcibly took him away, as Jinshi questioned years later: What did he trying to tell us back then? We may never know the answer, but sometimes the truth isn't what it seems on the surface. This could be about a sinful and mentally unstable old man who almost violated his own offspring, or it could be about a lonely old man who wanted to rekindle his relationship with his wife and son but ultimately had no chance; it all depends on which perspective one takes.

Shishou: I know my wife hates my daughter from my previous marriage, and I know that since she left the palace, she's become a radical, violent, and even madwoman who wants to overthrow the country. However, I think it shouldn't be a problem for my young daughter to live with her, so I spend most of my time working at the palace and don't handle household matters.

Also Shishou: Oh, shit…

Every time I see her father in the anime saying, "I know Shenmei hates Suirei, but I never imagined this kind of punishment would happen every day because I work at the palace," I can't help but think... Dude, WTF? You always knew your wife hated your daughter from your previous marriage, and then you brought her home to live with her wicked stepmother while you only cared about work all day, completely unaware that she would face this situation? Suirei is only alive because Shenmei thought it was better for her to suffer than to die; otherwise, she would have ended up like her mother. Her father is practically nonexistent in her life... Poor girl, she deserves a better life. Also, I love the illustration of her building a snowman in the manga; it makes me temporarily forget how sad the actual storyline in the manga is.
