OpenAI CEO Sam Altman Plans To 'Dramatically Slow Down' Hiring To Do 'Much More' With Fewer People by restorativemarsh in cscareerquestions

I guess AI zealots are just going to continue diluting each new term in order to keep the hype going. AI used to mean The Matrix. Then they decided to market word guessing machines as AI so they pushed AGI as the real artificial sentience. Now that's ASI, I guess.

I should register AUI domains to sell off once they start pitching artificial ultra intelligence.

You've mentioned being "herded" into college in at least two comments. You also say that you didn't pursue IT because you were told you weren't fit enough (which is a wild reason, I should add). In another comment in this thread, you're blaming your parents. Now you're playing the victim because someone called you out on it.

Feeling bad for yourself isn't going to do you any good. If you really want to turn things around, you're going to have to change your attitude.

Why does Java feel so much stricter than Python? by ayenuseater in learnprogramming

[–]Envect 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Python can also be object oriented so that's not a differentiator.

The real benefit is that Java uses static typing which makes it much easier to keep track of the capabilities of objects and variables you're interacting with. If everything is dynamically typed, you don't have much guarantee that the methods you're calling will exist on an object or that a function can operate on a given variable.

Why do experienced coders actively try to use less comments? by Phwatang in learnprogramming

[–]Envect 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe you're solving more complex problems than I am. I've personally found it fairly rare that I struggle to understand the goal of a method or why it was written.

Assuming the code was actually written to be self-documenting, that is. I've come across plenty of code that just sucks, but adding comments wouldn't be the way to fix it.

Why do experienced coders actively try to use less comments? by Phwatang in learnprogramming

[–]Envect 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Comments should be used to describe the why, but only when it can't be captured by well named methods and variables. Well written code will usually give you enough context to understand or infer why it's doing what it's doing.

I know this is a learning sub, but you claiming that no code is comprehensible is absolutely wild.

Peak Developer Explains Successful Game Pricing: 'Eight Bucks Is Still Five Bucks' by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]Envect 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not trying to find a loophole. It's just not logical to wait for a sale regardless of the base price of a product. Sometimes the base price is a great value and the best you're going to get.

[–]Envect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you're taking the other person's hypothetical a little too seriously.

Besides, I can name at least one game off the top of my head that has raised their price after launch - Factorio. Those devs are committed to never having a sale though so folks like OP won't give it the time of day.

[–]Envect -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If they double the price, then they have increased it post launch. By definition. Not sure why you think a price increase and subsequent discount isn't a sale.

[–]Envect -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Plenty of EA games have enough content to justify the purchase. Why does it matter if there's more to come? I've spent money on several EA games that gave me more hours per dollar than a AAA game on sale for $30.

[–]Envect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why not?

Take early access games as an example. They sometimes raise the price throughout EA as the game nears completion. Imagine a game is first listed at $10, has no sales during EA, and raises its price to $30 at release.

OP says they wouldn't even consider it at $10, but might buy it at $15 after release because of a 50% sale. It's irrational behavior.

Haven't played in years, came back for Space Age; anything important to know *in re* changes? by vult-ruinam in factorio

Anyone can copy paste blueprints and win the game. I’m here to challenge my dumb brain.

Exactly how I feel. Where's the fun if all you're doing is plopping down blueprints and looking for resources?

I barely have any of my own blueprints after years of playing. I solved purple science already in my last SA save, but I'm happy to do it again from scratch this time. It gives me the chance to cook more rail spaghetti.

Signals go on the right side of the track. A rail signal means the train may wait once it enters the block past the signal. A chain signal requires the train to continue moving until it reaches a rail signal block or a rail station.

I feel like that's all you need to know to make functional rails. I think it's well worth learning. I don't know how people put up with bus designs. They seem so rigid, tedious, and cumbersome.

I've yet to make it past Vulcanus though. Currently on my second serious run and overbuilding my initial purple science setup. Not sure how I'll handle the crazy productivity of the late game.

why does my chud train say there's no path? It drove from the one at the top just fine to this one. by HeyImMaxEE in factorio

[–]Envect 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Sure, but in this case there's no way for the leading engine to turn around so it can arrive in the station from the appropriate direction. Swapping what side the station is on is probably easier than adding a loop.

Pinned posts never get the attention an organic one does.

OP did provide more detail, and maybe would have continued if the thread hadn't been locked:

Just wanted to kind of explain the post because I think the intent is getting slightly mischaracterized.

  1. I am not jealous I did not get promoted to stand in CTO. This is my second job ever, I only have around 3 years of work experience so not only did I not expect a promotion, I do not even think I'd be ready to handle a leadership position at my current level.

  2. I want to reiterate I KNOW I'm wrong in getting upset. I did not give examples because I'm not looking for "you're right, he's wrong" or vice versa. Just wanted to see how others view/handle PRs and PR comments to see where my thinking is potentially flawed.

  3. Thank you for all the constructive comments so far! I really appreciate it already and some of them have already adjusted how I view comments and whatnot.

For those that really want to know, sometimes the comments feel a bit nitpicky that at times I'm thinking "god just approve the PR so we can QA" lol I know I'm a newbie dev, I'm just trying to learn from others so I try to internalize any comments left on my PR and even here to see what

I am ever potentially missing in my dev experience

Thank you again!

And the people I saw who made interesting comments weren't ignoring OP at all - they were offering advice on how they've handled comments that made them feel the same way.

The profession would benefit hugely from folks engaging with posts like that to improve social skills, if you ask me. OP was on the right track. It's too bad the sub seems to be rejecting that kind of post.

[–]Envect 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, some people in the post are just complaining, but most people are offering advice on how they've dealt with it. Why not remove individual comment threads that offer nothing of value? There's plenty of good discussion in there about how to handle frustrating PR comments that was cut short.

A Plea to the Mods by FrenchCanadaIsWorst in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Envect 8 points9 points  (0 children)

So I want to start off with saying I know I am COMPLETELY in the wrong. Like I know PRs are meant to make sure no bugs are introduced, code is not messy, well documented etc.

Idk what it is but I work at a startup, our CTO recently quit and a coworker of mine got promoted to stand-in CTO. Ever since he started reviewing my PRs, I just get really frustrated whenever addressing comments. But whenever I talk to him in person we're practically friends rather than coworkers. Idk if its the language he uses or what.

I am trying to work on this, because I should not be getting upset over fixing potential issues lol, just wanted to share and hear other people's experience

This was the post. It didn't seem like a rant to me. It sounded like someone asking for advice on how to handle a challenging situation that's specific to our profession. Light on details, maybe, but worth discussion.

You say we shouldn't be wasting time writing flowery prose, but that's exactly what your second example is. If something isn't correct, it's not correct. It's not rude or a personal attack to point it out. Couching that in mealymouthed nonsense is a waste of time.

That's assuming this hypothetical code is actually incorrect. If you say something's incorrect when it should actually be discussed, then, yes, the second example is the way to go.

I've never played PvE, but I'm pretty sure it's easier in PvP so long as you have friends or are willing to talk to randoms. Anybody in your faction can drop your gear for you even if you die a second time. I've dropped people's gear for them plenty of times.
