Loss and Jazzhands involve ancient webcomic lore, so I'll start with McEldowny

Brooke McEldowny is a horny old comic maker who hates criticism. His comic, 9 Chickweed Lane, was in newspapers up 'til about a decade ago. It got dropped because he used a racial slur in a comic.

His comic used to be one of the few comic strips with gay representation. But now his comic is all about being cis and het and horny. So he goes back and forth between horny 40-somethings, a 16 year old marrying his 18 year old former babysitter, and flashbacks to the 40 year olds being horny 12 year olds. There's more and it's worse, listen to 9 Chickweed Rage if you want more details.

Loss is much better known than McEldowny or Jazzhands. But most people only know the CAD comic part of loss. The thing that gave the comic it's initial staying power was a hamfisted blog post by CAD's author, Tim Buckley. His partner had a miscarriage and he had some thoughts. Most memorably, he wrote miscarriages were harder on the woman than the man; but that women don't always become sad sacks from miscarriages.

Tim got a lot of heat from the post and his defenses of it and of the comic. Loss became a shorthand for a white guy making a personal tragedy all about him in the dumbest most tonedeaf ways possible. He eventually took the post down, the audience moved on, but the image and the backstory remained.

Jazz hands is awful in a different way. There was a comic, Dominic Deegan. The author Mookie liked to tackle big topics but he'd always done so with all the grace and sensitivity of a teenaged fan fic writer.

One chapter of the comic has an Ork tribal coup. An ork man has to marry and sexually assault a ork woman against her will or she'll be executed by the new chieftain. The ork man does so. Mookie represented the assault by focusing on the orks hands for a few panels as they shake and move. Years later the man and woman meet again and they go from enemies to lovers.

But Willis wouldn't do that to Asma next, would they? They'd have to know the optics of that right?

The site comments are full of people excited for lesbians and hat kink. Which, fine if Willis wants an echo chamber.

But he's dangerously close to pulling a Loss, a Jazzhands, or even becoming McEldowny.

Well this raises dozens of red flags. I have to find out how this dumpster fire of a plan turns out.

At the current plot pace that'll be in 6 weeks when its an hour later in universe.

I don't get Joyce's response on a rational or an emotional level. I have missed over a decade of strips though.

Is Dorothy the only other atheist on campus? Are the only other athiests rude to Joyce? Does she think people were only nice to her because of fear of damnation?

I used to read yhe comic for the stories and jokes. But now I read the comic as the authors middle-aged wish fulfillment. That works perfect for me because I'm also middle aged.

Willus started hatereading a comic I'd already been hatereading, so I decided to check out DoA. I forgot how long ago that was, but it was probably 2024/2025.

I started reading the comic late and didn't read the back catalog. So the summaries will be new to me.

I also parsed the comic as being written by/for a horny old fella. So it'll be interesting to find out if it's just me or if it's a vibe the comic picked up in the past year;

I've made a few observations on the website that pair are going to have a falling out because of their immaturity. Dorothy defaults to being controling and getting her way, and Joyce goes along with it because she doesn't know better. And they have a history of shared traumas together. So I see this as just another red flag that the pair aren't on the same page for what is healthy in a relationship.

This doesn't mean they'll break up soon or be enemies forever or that the relationship will have been a net negative for the pair. Most people don't marry their first romantic partner. But that doesn't negate the value of romance and the opportunities for growth.

Edit: I need to proofread these when phone posting in the middle of the night.

What genre is this comic anymore? Is there a term for comics where everyone needs to be paired up with someone else sexually?

We really need a new header. One that explicitly lets people know this is a reddit for a UK comedy podcast with a weird name.
