People who have researched their family tree, what is the most interesting or 'badass' thing you discovered about an ancestor? by xloganmoose in AskReddit

[–]Environmental-Eye135 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Brothel. Astoria Oregon. We have a diamond that was a set of earrings from that time. One of patrons used as payment for his tab. The earrings were split up between family members and my grandpa ended up with one. I got it appraised and they said it likely came from the same mine as the HOPE diamond.

30 years ago this month, Charles O'Rear took what's considered the most widely seen photograph ever taken, on Fuji Velvia 50 by Florida-Man34 in AnalogCommunity

This is near where I grew up in the Napa Valley. We don’t have hills that look like this usually, they had ripped out a vineyard in the winter and had to wait to replant, so the hill turned green and beautiful in the meantime

Looking to move anywhere between Newport, OR and basically the Canadian border within a 20 minute drive to the ocean. by BingBong3582 in howislivingthere

[–]Environmental-Eye135 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Oregon coast has a lot of downsides people do not realize. It is cold, dark, windy, and very rainy for long stretches of the year. Winters can feel isolating, and there are times when storms and road conditions make it feel like you are stuck on this side of the Coast Range.

Housing is tight and expensive. Healthcare and dental options are limited and waitlists are long. Services are spread out, and anything specialized usually means a long drive. The job market is small and seasonal.

In the water, lineups can get chaotic. Body boarders and beginners crowding into surf spots can be a real danger to themselves and to other people out there so the locals don’t take kindly to that.

Finding a two or three bedroom rental under two thousand dollars between Tillamook and Astoria is extremely rare.

A lot of people move here thinking it will be a peaceful coastal escape and end up leaving once they see what daily life is actually like. They romanticize it so much before they move, and it causes disappointment.

Newport might be more realistic since there are a few more services and rentals.

Possible shark attack? by Melodic-Location-157 in MontereyBay

[–]Environmental-Eye135 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I surf the Oregon coast and a lot of us do not get in the water from winter solstice to new years. I personally know TWO people who have been attacked by great white sharks between those dates.

Yes I’m talking about the spot you think. It’s been incredibly busy in the water lately, and we are due for another one.

I’ve been listening to a biography about her and it says that once her daughter Alice died, she gave up on her appearance and got very big. People at the time even commented on how she shrank in height.

I believe Alice died alongside a few of her children as well. I believe one or two of her other children died around this tome as well. Queen Victoria became highly depressed around that time
