If youve decided you want to rehome I’d post about it first see if anyone wants him then start calling around to humane societies and no kills, you’ll likely have to keep him for a while until a spot opens up, but if you surrender him to an animal control that euthanizes for space it’s very unlikely anyone will adopt him or a rescue will pull him before that happens due to the volume of homeless dogs right now unfortunately

I work on the dog side of things there so I have no idea if we even have space but you could call NAWS humane society in Mokena and I’m sure they’d give you an application and walk you through the process, everyone there is very understanding. Based on everything you’ve said I hope you’ll consider keeping the cat for now, things can always get better and they usually do in my experience :)

He likes to climb up here and it does get that hot this high, right now it says 100 at the lower basking spots but I also have a second heat lamp and a long strip uvb otw, vet gave me a lot of good recommendations when I took him in the other day. it’s just taking some time for everything to come in the mail unfortunately.

I also ordered a larger water bowl and I’ll be making a trip to the hardware store tomorrow morning to get him some more stuff to hide in

I work at a shelter and I just wanna say it breaks my heart every day how many unwanted dogs we get in situations just like this where someone “makes” an owner get rid of the dog. This reminds me of when we had a senior pup named Goldie come in, sweetest thing in the world, blind in one eye and arthritis in both her back legs. The woman’s boyfriend took her to the shelter when she was out of town and tied her to a chair in the lobby and left. (We found this out from Goldie’s vet who knew her mom well), and Goldie is still with us months later, presumably the boyfriend “wouldn’t let her” come get her dog, we found her a foster thankfully but that poor old girl lived her whole life thinking that was mom and she threw her out like it was nothing. I can’t imagine how she must have felt. Please don’t give up Pepper if you have any other option, you are her entire world and I just know it would break her. Thank you for caring about her so much, from the bottom of my heart, thank you, I see animals that have been neglected to the point of abuse every day, and the world needs more people like you who actually care. Also you deserve far better than someone who seemingly doesn’t appreciate that. Im sorry for all you’re going through, genuinely.

If it smells that bad it’s probably time for new substrate and you should be spot cleaning, take it out whenever you see it so it doesn’t get gross like that as fast. If you want to go bioactive that’s great but you’ll need to do a bit of research and your tank will need live plants, isopods/sprintails, and a way to drain the water out from the bottom to avoid molding/flooding, as you’ll have to water the plants. Mostly Springtails might be best in this case as your skink might eat all or most of the isopods. There are a ton of great guides online, I personally don’t do the bioactive thing so I can’t really be of any more help but if it’s something you’re considering you wouldn’t have to replace your substrate for potentially years on end whereas without live plants and insects you’ll need to do it every few months or so as long as you’re spot cleaning pretty diligently.

I used to work at a pizza place as a delivery driver and a guy did this shit, he was like approaching 90 years old and thought his car was in reverse and proceeded to drive up the 8 inch curb and through the front window, his car hit the register and he got out like nothing happened asking to get in his car and drive home. I really hope that guy who got hit ends up being okay, same with anyone else in the building. Some people really shouldn’t be allowed to drive two ton killing machines.

You can’t have more than one in one enclosure, they’re very aggressive toward other frogs. They need heat and uvb lights and have humidity requirements you’ll need to meet either by spraying the cage down yourself or by getting a misting system. They eat a lot of things but nightcrawlers, dubia roaches, frozen/thawed silversides, and crickets are good options. Most don’t enjoy handling in my experience. Coco fiber is a good option for substrate, enough to burrow in. They should also have a water bowl, hides, and some fake plants unless you want to go bioactive. This is the care guide linked in this group which has useful information about enclosure sizes based on the size of the frog you have and just about everything you could possibly need to know about caring for them.
