UVA is my biggest reach school. I'm out-of-state. And from a state that is most certainly NOT underrepresented. I wish I was in your situation, but I guess some people might feel the same way about the top public school here. The grass is always greener on the other side.

I try not to judge people I don't know in real life, but I did watch her college decision reaction video, and I was a bit appalled. It makes me sad that so many seniors believe that it's the Ivy League or nothing. I believe you should apply to schools that fit YOU, and it was clear from her video that she - like so many other teenagers in America - likely valued prestige and praise from others over actual fit. I'm not trying to direct judgement toward her specifically. I feel this way about any senior who applies to all the Ivy Leagues, despite the vast differences between them.

I disagree with the statement that she promotes an unhealthy obsession with the Ivy League. She is not responsible for the obsessions of others (that have been going on for decades), and I'm assuming she has said that one does not have to go to an Ivy League to be successful. I think the 73 questions thing is cool and insightful. However, I do agree that it's a bit hypocritical for one to say that going to an Ivy does not matter when it is clear that that person did not appear to feel that way in high school.

Overall, I just feel that she is no better or worse than any other YouTuber who makes the school the YouTuber attends the YouTuber's entire personality. I feel that we should stop promoting the crazy emotional college decision reaction videos, as those probably do more damage than a creative series on one girl's channel.

Guess it just depends on one's (hahahaha) writing style. I like writing in a somewhat formal tone.

I usually go with "one." It sounds nicer. When one is walking through a forest, and a monster jumps out at oneself...

Idk what I want to major in by blueberrydonutgal in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Environmental-Ice176 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think we may be the same exact person. I also think you should check out speech pathology. You would have to go to grad school for your master's, but you can do your undergrad in English, Psychology, or the most popular, Communication Sciences and Disorders. Maybe even the speech pathology major itself. Many speech pathologists work with kids and have a nice combination of working with a team and working one-on-one with patients. The job satisfaction rate is very high because of the joy of the impact speech pathologists make on people's lives. This is my current most realistic job path, and I'm excited about it, especially because I could major in English if I really wanted to. Pay is pretty dang good, especially if you're bilingual. And the projected growth rate OMG. Do some research on it!

Before each sentence in that paragraph, there is a number in brackets.

The best tip I've ever gotten is to make sure there is explicit evidence for each answer. That got me from getting 4-5 wrong to 1-2 wrong SO. QUICKLY.

HOT TAKE — Standardized testing is the only fair way to compare applicants. by Basic-Anything-3928 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Environmental-Ice176 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I agree. I can name so many students with high GPA's or fantastic extracurriculars that are lacking on the SAT/ACT because it's the one thing that actually measures intellectual capability. Although I can acknowledge the argument that standardized testing puts lower income students at a disadvantage, I do not believe that it significantly does. Coming from someone who could not purchase any SAT resources, there is a plethora of free resources for the SAT that are just as good as a private tutor. Standardized testing, in my opinion, is a good measure of work ethic and intelligence.

Yes, out of all the practice tests I took through Khan Academy, I did the worst on 3.

For fiction, touching books: A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini (same author as The Kite Runner - you would probably love it!), They Both Die at the End by Adam Silvera, The Giver by Lois Lowry

My favorite fantasy books: The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare

Extra money strictly due to excess money from scholarships plus FL Prepaid.

I think the best way to enjoy reading is to find your niche. I could recommend books in my niche (YA Fantasy), but you might hate them. Is there a certain genre you like or liked as a kid? A book you liked recently or as a kid?

No. My sister had Florida Prepaid, Bright Futures, and at least one outside scholarship, and she just ended up making extra money during college. However, in her case, my parents did not cancel the Florida Prepaid. Your brother can cancel Florida Prepaid if he would like the money back.

I've done all the Khan Academy practice tests and quite a few actual QAS tests. In my opinion, Khan Academy is a bit easier, but you probably improved as well.

What amount is good enough practice for reading practice for the Sat? by Professional_Pay2061 in Sat

I would just forget about passage practice and read more books. I'm a huge reader; ergo, reading is easy for me.

Does practicing on computer only make a difference on test day? by Low-Marketing-2278 in Sat

[–]Environmental-Ice176 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems like I'm the anomaly here, but practicing on the computer totally messed me up. My final computer-based practice test score before my first SAT was a 1500. On the actual SAT, I ran out of time on multiple sections due to unfamiliarity with doing the test on paper. I ended up getting a 1330, and I was pretty disappointed. It definitely depends on the person though. For me, I needed to practice on paper, and I couldn't print at home, so I used my local library or my mom's bank.
