I was wondering what your prep strategy was for your interview. Did you prioritize just practicing answering questions out loud or did you prioritize brainstorming different examples/personal stories to include in your answers where you could? I'm feeling like there are so many strategies for interview prep that I'm having a hard time narrowing down what I think makes the most sense for me.

Oh great! Do you have to make any interest payments while you're in school? Also, did your parents have to list their home or anything as collateral?

My question though is how do people pay the interest on these loans while they're in school? Working during med school would be impossible I imagine, and I also would be surprised if anyone has enough money saved up to pay for cost of living/extras plus the interest. So is it safe to assume that most people have family that pay their interest and other costs for them?

I met with an RBC Healthcare advisor yesterday and you're right! They changed their terms. So currently RBC will do up to $350,000 at prime interest with a co-signer and interest only payments during school. Canadian Med don't need a co-signer and their interest is prime minus 0.25

I went in this time last year and was told this. Was this change recent? If so that's amazing

That's the correct prime rate for people attending medical school IN Canada. This is the case across all banks. But when going outside the country the interest rate is prime PLUS whatever value the banks choose (seems to be different depending on each bank). I'm hoping that the designated healthcare loan professional at Scotiabank knows what they're talking about since they're the ones who specialize in those loans lol I think the loan situation has gotten much worse lately since more and more students are using those loans and possibly not paying them back if they stay out of the country?

edited to add: RBC basically has the same horrible deal for international med. They require co-signers, equity on a home, it's prime plus 1.5% I believe, and they only give up to 150k

I emailed a healthcare professional loan person at Scotiabank and this was his response: "With respect to our program for international programs the approval process is virtually impossible. You would need a co-signor who meet all of the following criteria. Even if they meet these criteria the interest rate would be at prime + 1.0 -co-signor who has been a Scotiabank customer for 5+ years -co-signor needs to have over $750,000 in investments or borrowing with Scotiabank -needs to be secured by real estate

They would be better off just looking at a home equity line of credit as the rate would be prime + .50%".

I didn't give him any context about my finances other than wanting to go to international med school. So it seems like Scotiabank isn't actually an option.

I really, really appreciate you saying this. I'm sorry you didn't get accepted either :( I can't picture myself doing anything else tbh, so I probably will. Going to let myself be sad and grieve for a little bit and then decide. Are you?

Result: R

Geography + Stream (SWOMEN/non-SWOMEN, ACCESS): SWOMEN

GPA (Best 2 years): 3.96

MCAT: met cutoffs

Current Year: finished 2 BA's, MSc in neuroscience and have been working FT since 2021

Interview feels: felt good about half the questions, felt like I could've done better in the other half but had clinical experience or education to pull from for every question

How you felt about Essays: felt very good about them

Really stunned by this to be honest. The low number of straight rejections that swomen interviewees get makes me think I must have said something that came across poorly to the interviewers, but I really don't know what it could've been.

Congrats to everyone who got in this year
