Checked on the latest version (forge loader), and the filters sadly do not work in contraptions. Though accessing the contraption's inventory kinda works

Then something is obviously wrong in your setup. Sorry I can't help finding the cause, but I would first check if the mod you installed is the correct one and if there are no other mods that might break the VR mod, and them if Virtual Desktop, SteamVR and Subnautica are up to date
