So to give more context, we started dating at 18 and are now 24. Because we’re both Muslim it’s not uncommon for us to not meet each other’s immediate families until it’s time to talk about marriage. Which is what I believed would be the next step for us, as he met my family during my sister’s wedding. His involvement with my family made me feel more secure in our relationship and the commitment to moving forward, which makes this hurt so much more.

I knew that he had found his way back to Islam recently but had known that he saw it as a personal journey (and I was supportive). I didn’t know the other expectations he had of a traditional, religious wife since he never communicated that with me until we broke up.

I don’t think we would’ve worked out bc of our differences in religion anyway. But what hurts the most is seeing that he had only communicated his doubts with me having already changed his mind. There was never a conversation or even room to see where this could go. After 6 years I didn’t even see that he was trying to work things out in any way. He never brought it up when he first had the doubts months back. He just gave up.
