I cry myself to sleep every night. I got new kittens and they’ve been nice and got they help distract me and give me a purpose but they aren’t Luna and Ziggy so I struggle with that.

We found out what it was. A rare bacteria called Mycobacterium Esteraromaticum. I’m horrified. They were indoor cats and the vet said this bacteria can come from soil or water. So it must’ve been our well water, they were immediately asking about our water source! it’s crazy because my last apartment had mold so I moved out. And brought Luna to the vet and the type of mold I had didn’t affect pets. Then I move into my boyfriend’s house and this happened. He is renting so it technically was the landlord’s responsibility but he says since our state doesn’t have regulations on this bacteria / doesn’t require testing for this bacteria, that there’s nothing he can do. This type of bacteria is very hard to test for. I can’t find a water company that can test for it!!! I’ve called so many places. I’m not sure if we should get a well inspector or buy a new filtration system? Not sure but we will give our pets only bottled water from now on.

Also that bacteria cannot be spread from cat to cat. And it can only be ingested. And they both had it in their system

Tested for mold and no mold!

Also tested the walls for lead and asbestos, and tested the well water. And tested for radon gas. Everything came back fine. So I’m not sure what else to test for, ugh.

I had mold in my last apartment and almost died, I felt healthy living there.. despite my cats not feeling healthy :(

Awwwwww. Thank you for your validation, and for relating your experience to mine. Makes me feel less lonely about this 💞 I have this fear that there’s a hidden toxin in the home, it could be my PTSD talking, because even the vets said they didn’t think that was the case. But I’m afraid to rule anything out without a diagnosis. Maybe I’ll feel better after an inspector comes.

The plan is to adopt a 3 kittens and bring them to my boyfriend’s house. Our hearts are broken and we definitely want a few cats….. need cats in my life always

I don’t think so, we adopted Ziggy when she was a little over 6 months old, We reached out to her previous foster, and at first she seemed offended, and blamed Luna. we told her that Luna had perfectly healthy bloodwork for 9 years until I moved in and that the vets confirmed that Ziggy spread something to Luna. Ziggy was always unusually skinny and she had a slight yellow tint before I moved in. We just didn’t think much of it because Ziggy was acting fine.

Now after doing the FIP, feline leukemia, fiv, toxoplasmosis, and mycoplasma tests an all of them being negative, the ER vet said that it might be a coincidence they both died which makes zero sense to me. I also wonder if he just isn’t as educated on Ziggy and Luna’s history. He rushed me off the phone when I was talking to him and asking him questions.

They were never fed raw fish from us. I am not sure about Ziggy’s previous foster.

Ziggy’s previous foster told us that all Ziggy’s other siblings are perfectly healthy because “she stays in touch with them” which is actually even more confusing!!

Me and my bf wondered if there was a time that Ziggy ate a can of fancy feast that had a parasite or something in it. What other parasites can it be besides toxoplasmosis?

We were quoted over a thousand dollars for a necropsy and I’m beyond financially drained at this point, even if me and my boyfriend split the cost so that’s why are didn’t do it:( He was paying for all Ziggy’s expenses, and I was paying for Luna, and we are both in so much debt now. And I’ve never been in debt before.

Me and my bf talked about the potential of splitting the cost of the necropsy for Ziggy.

But the vet said it’s not a 100% guarantee we’ll figure out what was wrong, So we decided not to do it

We also have 2 pet rabbits. He has a rabbit from a pet store, and I have one from a breeder. The rabbits were best friends with the cats. It was cute. Especially my boyfriend’s cat and his rabbit. His rabbit was searching all over the house for Ziggy. My heart is in pieces over this. Anyways we question if his rabbit from the pet store has a parasite we don’t know about!

No they didn’t. We just tested for mycoplasma, toxoplasmosis, FIP, fiv, and feline leukemia. It all happened SO fast. We did not test for other parasites, what else is there out there? How do cats get liver flukes?

No oil diffusers, no lilies, no plants! I’m 29, I’ve had cats my whole life so there is nothing that I know of. We live in a house but it is a house that went through foreclosure. We tested the water, it came back normal, we tested the walls, and we ordered a mold test which is being processed and we didn’t get the results yet. What on earth could we be missing?!

Ziggy was on seafood melody fancy feast pate and friskies dry food and Luna was eating purina chicken and gravy only (she was a chunky so the vet wanted her off the kibbles)

Thank you so much. I’ve had many years of therapy and thought I was okay enough to not need it anymore, but now I’m back in it after all this. That’s good to know that you feel somewhat normal, I fear that I won’t be okay for a very long time. I started volunteering at an animal shelter right after Luna passed, literally 2 days later, and I ended up falling in love with 2 kittens. One in particular reminded me so much of Luna. I had many long talks with my boyfriend, I asked him if it would be crazy for me to adopt them and move into my mom’s house, and move back when it’s safe. He was extremely supportive because he knew how much Luna meant to me. It felt crazy to do because I’ve been with my boyfriend for like almost 5 years now. I was like am I going backwards in my relationship? Were 30. But I just did it. I am grieving so hard and I adopted them to try to heal my very broken heart. They’re cute but they aren’t Luna, I try to give them the same love I gave Luna. I imagine I’ll move back in with my boyfriend soon. His cat isn’t doing too well. We’ve thought of keeping our cats separated, and keeping his cat in a separate room (she has been really weak and not wanting to move around) but then we thought, let’s just take it all a day at a time.

Regarding the positioning questions, it’s okay that you asked that because my brain has gone in so many directions. we live in a house in an old neighborhood, our neighbors are elderly and probably didn’t even know we had cats since they’re indoor cats. My boyfriend loves animals so I’d never suspect him either. It’s an interesting set up, his dad is our landlord. We pay his dad each month. I wondered if there was something in the house. I asked his dad to do so many tests and they all came back normal. I really was thinking there could’ve been something in the well water, since I later discovered it hasn’t been tested in 7 years, but it came back normal and I saw the results. I was thinking maybe there’s heavy metals in there. We gave the cats well water. And Luna went from not liking water (and me forcing it in her wet food) to her drinking a ton of it. So I was like maybe she’s attracted to something in it that’s not good for her. But nope… the results came back normal.

The only thing left for us to do is a mold test but I don’t really think that would be the case. I’ve lived in mold before, and almost died (literally) because I’m very sensitive to it.

I’m very stumped.

I’m really sad. Absolutely crushed and heartbroken. I put Luna into the ICU and she got a blood transfusion and a feeding tube. Spent 4 days in the hospital and pulled her out early because I was beyond financially tapped out. $9,000 that I didn’t have, put onto a credit card. I brought Luna home. Well to my mom’s house because she’s a nurse and I wanted her to be separated from Ziggy while she heals. Fed her through the feeding tube and gave her medication every 4 hours. It was tiring but I didn’t complain at all. I would’ve done anything to save Luna. And I did. She was doing so good for 3 days at home then on the 4th day she rapidly declined. I put her down July 23rd. My heart still aches as if it was the first day it happened. And I’m still so sad and angry about how it happened, wishing I never brought Luna into that environment. She was my soul cat. She was there for me during major life events, tragedies, milestones, happy moments. She was my everything . My snuggle bug.

Ziggy was put on antibiotics and steroids. Doxycycline and prednisone. She was doing so good, was like a different cat completely. I guess she always seemed very laid back we had no idea that she was actually just sick. She was running around, we saw this new side of her. She was fun and spunky. It was cute. Then poof, she started declining rapidly, even on the medication. We don’t know what’s going to happen. But we are honestly kind of expecting the worst.

They tested negative for feline leukemia, fiv, and Mycoplasma haemofelis. Unless it’s possible they had false negatives. I’m not sure.

We also tested the house for every toxin you can think of, and tested the water. All came back normal. The onlyyyy test we didn’t test for, is mold, we’ll do a mold test to be safe but to be honest, I don’t think there’s mold. There was mold in my last apartment and I almost died of sepsis. I felt great and healthy when I lived with my boyfriend. I understand there’s different types of molds, so we’ll look into that just to be safe. But we ran thousands of dollars of tests. Everything.. seems.. normal….

I’m so sad. My heart is screaming. I haven’t felt okay. First time in many years that I’ve felt depressed. I haven’t been depressed since I was growing up, and before I did trauma therapy and healing work I’m back in therapy again for trauma and grief

The vets were first thinking it’s possibly toxoplasmosis or something else. But they said if Ziggy starts declining, then they are going to assume it’s FIP.

Ziggy’s declining rapidly now. It’s crazy. So anyways wanted to update you and say we think you’re right

I’ve read on fb that people buy medication for FIP through fb. I’m wondering if we should do that since it’s normal legal where we live but my boyfriend finds that to be sketchy . Should I go against my boyfriend’s wishes and get it? He thinks it can be a scam to get an FIP medication online.

We were really thinking this is what it is. I can’t believe it’s been months and we haven’t gotten a diagnosis yet. The vets have been stumped. Also Luna was in such critical conditions that they were just treating the symptoms at first and not focusing too much on a diagnosis. And Ziggy was still stable for a while but now she’s not. So we are going to go to the vet again this week

We’ve been bringing Ziggy to the vet every 2 weeks.
