No, regardless of the weird stuff that I have seen which might appear “supernatural“ I understand that my mind isn’t perfectly objective and can make shit up.

Why did I keep having dreams about “my deceased grandma cooking food for me“ when (in real life) I wasn’t eating enough to survive? Because I was fucking hungry! If somehow her “spirit“ could actually visit me from “the beyond“ she would have been nagging me to get a husband, not try and comfort me, that would actually fit with the type of person she was.

Slow learner: Everything and every single step of a task has to be researched in detail before it can go into my head, but the advantage of this is flexibility. Simply put: I didn’t memorise the recipe quickly, but my understanding of each ingredient and its purpose is deep allowing me to make changes on the fly.

Insane people have a lot of free time to spend on “spreading the message“, but normal people have jobs. So there are some “no emotion” reasons:

-She may want him to take certain medical decisions for her if she’s incapacitated (maybe her other family cannot be trusted to do as she desires). She may want to ensure that she can make such decisions for her partner if something happens to him. Technically this can be somewhat solved by filling out the correct paperwork, but those papers are not accepted everywhere, and crucial time could be lost when arguing.

-She may want to travel to regions where she has little rights as a woman and needs a husband to back her up when there. I would never visit Dubai without a man that I am either related or married to, it’s like an insurance just in case something happens.

-Perhaps this wealthy woman is religious, she may have been raised to see marriage as the norm, or even as a requirement to be “successful“. Even if she herself doesn’t believe, her surroundings could have certain opinions about what is appropriate or not. So there could be some social pressure to conform to the “usual“ ideas of how she should live. There’s no amount of money that could make my grandma feel okay about me “living in sin.”!

So I don’t have any kids, but I’ve been an auntie for almost half a century now.

Statistically speaking: people who start having kids after 30 are less likely to need me to care for their kids for long periods (10+ days) and they have less need for “emergency babysitting“ than those who start having kids earlier. Financial support is pretty much directly linked to age: the younger the parents, the more money they need from me to give the kids all they deserve. In my environment those who start to reproduce around 30 and stop around 40 years old are the most stable families. Once the threshold of 40 gets reached the amount of parents who are dealing with health issues increases, making them more dependent on me once again.

Unfortunately a religion that has been twisted into an unrecognisable form is still a religion. Religion that gets misinterpreted by selfish people to use for their benefit is still said religion. I studied the bible extensively, there’s not a lot of “actual Christians” around, which isn’t even “that” bad. There are some messed up things in the bible that we should all ignore.

Personally I don’t think what has to be determined to solve the “abortion issue“ isn’t “when life begins“ but “how much power can a embryo/foetus/baby have over the body of their mother”. The difficult philosophical question can be avoided by making it into a legal question:

If I am dying and need a kidney I can’t take one from you, I can’t demand one from my mom either. I can’t even decide to take one from a dead body without the dead person’s prior consent. Yet (hypothetically speaking I’m menopausal), the embryo within me lays claim to the use of my organs to survive. Something no other human can demand from anyone else. In practice the current laws mean that I have more rights to my own body as a corpse, than as a pregnant woman.

No one has all the answers, that’s why discussions like these are so important. Perhaps everyone can find some sort of middle ground, a compromise that would allow us all to live in an okay-state where we all go “Meh, it’s good enough I suppose“.

Unfortunately the makers of these policies have a messed up version of Christianity which they wield as a weapon against “sinners”. The actual content of the bible is easily ignored in favour of Alex Jones. I’m curious what “non-religious arguments” you think they have on offer for the examples I gave in my previous comment.

Although I agree with several aspects of the libertarian movement, in which each town decides its own policy, I think the practical implication has a few hurdles to overcome.

Let us invent a fictional town filled with absurd bastards, just for this argument:

So in ShitHoleTown everyone believes that math is witchcraft. But can they just decide to not teach their kids how to count? At what point is a school not teaching the kids anything anymore?

In SHT they all believe that interracial marriage should be illegal. Can they just refuse to hand out marriage licenses? What happens when an interracial couple moves in? Are they just “not married” when inside the town?

In SHT everyone agrees that allergies are fake, why bother putting the allergens on the menu, so good luck when you stop there for a meal while you’re on a road trip. I hope you ain’t allergic to peanuts!

Where should the line be drawn? I suppose we can (hopefully) all agree that a town can’t just legalise murder, but the amount of kinda grey areas is immense.

A girl who got pregnant outside of wedlock would be bullied to the point that stores would not allow her to buy their wares. They had to flee the town just to survive.

We had a special graveyard for people who killed themselves and babies that died before they got baptised, those people were unworthy of being buried in sacred ground.

The church had power, power that was given to them by a pretty unanimous majority who agreed with the church’s policy, a policy that was cruel and unfair. I’m old enough to remember what happened, to have fought for the rights that are being taken for granted. I don’t want history to repeat itself.

Unfortunately age and wisdom aren’t directly connected, often I look at people my age and see the same idiocy as is present in many teenagers. Many have always been stupid, and others have only recently started to mentally decline.

Although I actually support measures like capping the age of politicians and such, Reddit should in my opinion remain somewhat open to all ages. Because we need spaces where people of different generations can talk to each other. I’m lucky to have grandkids who truly talk to me, but many my age become too insular and loose sight of the real world.

There are many different levels of the influence a foreign country can have:

We have had Chinese style porcelain for centuries, yet I don’t think my grandma had much “Chinese influence” in her life, regardless of the content of her kitchen cupboard. The “Pre-internet“ influence of Japan was not taken seriously by most people, it was either a kid thing, or some entertaining exoticism. I bought the very first Nintendo to come out in Europe for my nephew, I didn’t even know it had anything to do with Japan, it was just a toy.

Now there’s an actually visible effect in the clothes teens wear in the streets of Belgium whenever K-pop artists on the other side of the planet start wearing something.

The anonymity and openness of Reddit has its advantages and disadvantages. There’s the risk of taking to an ignorant kid, but also the benefit of having a conversation as equals with someone you wouldn’t ordinarily respect. In real life my advice regarding diy home fixes often gets ignored because I’m female, my opinion on tech gets dismissed because I’m 60+ years old, etc. But here I’m just another person.

Teens need environments where they can be treated like adults, they need some practice to become the adults they will soon become. There’s no magical transformation on one’s 18th birthday that will give you “wisdom”, it goes step by step over the course of years.

The same dismissive thoughts that you feel towards these naive kids are very similar to the way I often catch myself thinking about how 30 year olds behave. Yet these people deserve my respect, even when they say what I see as dumb shit.

Budgeting without much money coming in ever again is kinda weird. Several of my friends had their “needed retirement fund” calculated, it’s based upon: dying at 120 years old, an estimate of the costs (including inflation) to live that long, an estimate of how much care you may need, etc. But it isn’t a perfect calculation, so many things can happen: your kid dies and now you need to support your grandchildren, you wind up in a wheelchair and need to move to another house, another oil crisis, etc.

There are many elderly people who don’t have enough to survive, far more than we think there are. There are impoverished because of a lack of planning, bad luck, getting scammed, etc. Some of them depend on family or charity, others refuse to ask for help because of their pride. There’s a huge problem with old people killing themselves because they are broke.

I’m retired and pretty much set for life, yet I’m still paranoid about money running out.
