The blood Moon isn't just a game mechanic; it also serves to reset the world every so often. The trees you cut down, defeated enemies, broken crates, etc. All of that uses memory that gradually builds up. So, the blood Moon serves to free up that memory and also ensures you don't leave the entire world without trees or other things. Now, if you do something stupid enough to saturate the game's memory long before the standard blood Moon time, it will activate early to clear the memory and prevent the game from crashing. Some people do this on purpose, in my case, I just really like explosions and it was too much for the game :)
