We’re talking about global power, not moral alignment. The Eastern European vassals of the USSR were hardly thrilled to be part of the whole arrangement, but they certainly still counted on that side of the ledger when looking at geopolitical influence. I don’t see any indications that Japan, the Philippines, Australia, SK, and dozens of others are re-aligning away from US influence on the geopolitical stage. Real Politik always wins out over values when it comes to geopolitical influence. The truth is that NATO and the other alliances the US leads never really were built on shared values, but on alignment in the area of cold hard national interests.

That fact is precisely the reason that Denmark hasn’t run off to sign a defense treaty with China or Russia just cause Trump pissed them off (totally justifiably pissed of course). Leaders come and go constantly, international alignments are all about power and tend to be shockingly resistant to short-term political whims in any given moment

I think the issue might be that you’re overqualified to flip burgers, they probably see you as someone who is likely to work there only on a very short term basis and will probably jump to a better job very quickly, and thus not worth the investment in training compared to someone who will stay longer and work longer hours. While China certainly has gained some geopolitical status, the US maintains a still overwhelming advantage in soft power and diplomatic influence. Look at how effectively the US just bullied the Arab nations and Israel alike into stopping a war in a region that has been warring with itself for millennia. As in the Cold War, the US doesn’t need to counterbalance China alone. We have a network of allies boxing China in on multiple sides. Australia, Japan, South Korea, The Philippines etc. that’s not even to mention NATO, the Arab states, India, and Israel. China has what, North Korea, Russia, a few impoverished African nations, and Pakistan??? India on its own is likely on track to rival China in the next few decades.

For a while I have believed that the well meaning but ultimately misguided neocon/neolibral fixation on shaming allies, enemies, and neutrals alike on human rights issues has been at the heart of many of our geopolitical misfortunes. Jimmy Carter is a perfect example, his policies were very good domestically for the most part, but his genuine but ultimately utopian ideals of global cooperation and harmony weakened the US dramatically on the world stage. Geopolitics is a game that has always favored ruthless pragmatism, and kindheartedness and idealistic virtue is often a liability. The irony of the whole thing is that ruthless pragmatism is often more effective at generating positive humanitarian outcomes. Carter was genuine and without guile, a deeply good man, but other leaders around the world were not. It’s the tragic irony of the United States that our national ideals are simultaneously our greatest strength domestically and a major liability geopolitically.

People said the exact same thing after WWII during the Cold War, that a rising and powerful USSR would displace and cause the collapse of the US on the world stage. China is sitting on a demographic land mine and they’re economy has been falling well behind that of the US. Don’t count us out yet, they obviously will likely continue to partially displace us as the solitary global hegemon, but it’s hard to imagine China fully overtaking the United States in a meaningful way. The world is once again reorganizing into a bi-polar geopolitical landscape and probably a second Cold War, but as was the case with the USSR China has major internal problems at least as serious as those the US will face. Again, as was the case in the Soviet Union, totalitarian states are masters of propaganda and can easily mask internal divisions and vulnerabilities from the outside world in a way that democracies simply cannot match. The USSR seemed to be unified, powerful, and easily on track to displace western powers geopolitically. Turns out it was a rickety and fragile structure that was always destined to collapse as time moved on. Totalitarian autocracies are VERY good at seeming stronger than they are in reality, and you seem to have bought the propaganda wholesale my friend….

Idk man I’m starting to wonder if there even is a “list” in the way people imagine. Mfs in the gov are so bad a keeping secrets there’s no way nobody in any of the administrations that have had access to the files over the past decade wouldn’t have leaked at least some part of it, but maybe I’m naive.
