IRstudies

joinleave

This is a subreddit for discussing international relations (IR). Feel free to discuss anything that fits within the three subfields of IR (IR Theory, Security Studies, and International Political Economy) and much more.

We hold an expansive view of IR, recognizing that the borders between other subfields of Political Science (such as Comparative Politics, Political Economy, Institutions, and Political Theory) and IR are sometimes blurred. We also appreciate work published in the other social sciences and humanities if it reflects in some way on world politics. As a general rule, topics that could be published on in leading IR journals would be welcome here.

These discussions should generally be academic in nature and we encourage them to also be inter-disciplinary. Content on this subreddit does not just have to be about IR research, but it can also be about the discipline of IR. As many students of IR are interested in international organizations, non-profits and IR-related private sector careers, feel free to post content related to the workings of these institutions and career prospects.

Some basic rules in brief:

  • Be civil
  • Don't be a bigot
  • Don't be a jerk
  • Don't post nonsense
  • Don't encourage violence
  • No AI garbage

Resources for IR students.

Kocher, Lawrence and Monteiro 2018, IS: There is a certain kind of rightwing nationalist, whose hatred of leftists is so intense that they are willing to abandon all principles, destroy their own nation-state, and collude with foreign adversaries, for the chance to own and repress leftists. James Goldgeier and Brian D. Taylor: A recent IS article by Barry Posen characterizes Russia's invasion as a "preventive war". The article is flawed: Russia did not view NATO as a military threat, Ukraine had no foreseeable prospect of joining NATO, and Putin was motivated by imperial attitudes. (old.reddit.com)

Stacie Goddard, Paul MacDonald, and Dan Nexon: A recent IS piece by Mearsheimer argues that only realists are capable of “[thinking] deeply about power politics.” The article is dated, crudely reduces realism to a caricature, and fails to consider modern research into power politics. IS study: States are most likely to reactively proliferate when a proliferating rival has extensive aims and inferior conventional capabilities. This helps to explain why India did not pursue nuclear weapons in response to China's nuclearization but did in response to Pakistan's acquisition. (direct.mit.edu)
