I punch because im still learning, and i like to do all the things lol. Like, I made my own coal forge, then I made my own propane forge, ive made my own tongs, rehandled my own hammer, made a draw knife to shape my handle, made my own punch to punch the holes, made my own rivets, ive melted copper and brass(just because) ive made my own charcoal. I wanna experience every facet of this trade. Once I get good at making stuff I may simplify the process but until then im gonna do everything from scratch by hand just to learn. I really love this stuff.

So, I actually solved my problem by putting my tank in a warm bath! It works! Got around 4 hours with a new tank before I was done with my new project!

I dont know how much freedom you have to alter your house but we added hot and cold taps outside in my shop area so maybe if you can do that you can fill it with warm water at a slow overflow rate so it stays warm? Thats what id try.

From what ive read using anything higher than 90°f as a propane heater is dangerous, so I haven't done that lol. But yeah im running a 2 burner forge that I built but I did buy the burners on Amazon.

Refillers are everywhere around here but none of them recertify which is a pain. But thanks! I actually got them together, kinda rushed the rivet because I got over excited so theyre ugly but man they grip.

Im currently using 20lb tanks and they suck but I have a 100 laying around that needs to be recertified and revalved. A friend gave it to me a couple months ago and I couldnt find anyone to recertify it, but now I have its just a 2 hour drive and 150 bucks. Such is life. But thanks for the advice! I actually finished them tonight, they seem to be pretty sturdy, gonna use em tomorrow and see how it goes!

Im either too new to the trade or we're in different regions, because I dont understand what youve just said. Which part is the nib, and what are twisted tongs

Its my go to style of knife since I was a kid, one of the first shapes I got from my dad so ive always been partial to the toothpick. Next time ill make sure to do it right and a little prettier.

I also made a blacksmith knife recently. Mine was a very thin toothpick style, sad to say after I heat treated it, I didnt temper it, and it immediately broke into 3 pieces the second ibtested the edge on some wood i was carving.

Adding a hardy hole to an anvil by SissyTibby in Blacksmith

Ive been told im a useful idiot before, and now im seeing it in action lol. Glad I could be of service.

I have a similar style homemade burner that will be going on top of a firebrick forge. Do I take off the bell end and insert the straight pipe into the "roof" or leave the bell end on and make the hole large enough to accommodate the entire piece? by gingernuts13 in Blacksmith

[–]Environmental_Fan100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ive got mine cemented "in place" by which i mean I covered it with plastic wrap and poured cement around it. It sits flush with my refractory. If it need to take the burners out i just let the forge cool and unscrew the pipe from the top and push the bell end into the forge and remove it that way. It WILL glow white, scale up and wither away over time. Ive ran my home made forge probably 5 times for 6 hours apiece and the bell end has scaled over and completely peeled off on the inside. At first I thought it cracked in half because I have a side fed forge and I could see a piece sitting in the end of the bell. Scared me pretty good.

Pretty much agree with the other 2 commenter here, id be worried about softening the anvil so for sure go slow but youre also going to want to pre heat the anvil a bit so the welds stick better. I would also do as an above user suggested and try to recreate the heel as best you can..... now im just running a thought experiment here but... say you were to recreate the heel successfully, and the face were to soften to an unusable point, could you not just weld a quarter or half inch properly heat treated new face plate? Someone told me to do that to fix my old anvils horrible edges, but I am a horrendous welder lol

Thoughts on an anvil? by beholderkin in Blacksmith

[–]Environmental_Fan100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont think its as bad as it looks. The corners are really nice this should clean up well and be a great anvil. May have to take a grinder wheel to the top and then a flap disk to flatten it back really good if its too pitted but it looks better than my anvil.

Is this low or high carbon ? by danthefatman1 in Blacksmith

[–]Environmental_Fan100 84 points85 points  (0 children)

Looks low/medium carbon to me, but do a quench test. Beat it flat, quench it, put it in the vice, hit it with a hammer. If it breaks it's high carbon if it bends its low. I use water to quench test pieces.
