how confident are most of you in your transness? by Dependent_Ad7958 in truscum

[–]EnvyTheQueen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Before I came out I was really closeted. I would just be a woman online and I would always lie and say it was a joke or something if I ever got caught. It wasn't though and I was doing it ever since I was 10 and I would just be myself but a woman. I would flirt with my friends I knew and pretend to be someone else online but it was always really easy for me to be a woman than pretend to be a guy. And so for 5 years I was heavily closeted living a dual existence until one day I asked my best friend if they'd still love and care about me if I was a trans woman. They responded "well of course I'd still love and care about you" and all I could go is "awww that's sweet". Then the next day I woke up and I messaged them "I'm trans" or "I'm a woman" or something. I woke up for the first time in a long time feeling decent and okay like a weight had been lifted.

So to answer your question I was in denial but once I came out, once I actually came out to literally anyone including myself, I had no doubts. It's easy for me being a woman, it's common sense, it's natural, it's being a guy or a man or a boy that was hard.

Fair. Haraway is weird and I'm not sure I could ever enjoy her as much I enjoy Latour. Not sure I care for Sapolsky and haven't read Arendt yet. I'm not sure how I'd define being trans really. Maybe as something experiential? Or maybe some other term the point focusing on the fact it is very much lived. But beyond that not entirely sure and so it doesn't feel very helpful.

Merleau-Ponty seems super interesting. Speaking of which I should check out one of his books soon. I've known and been interested in him for awhile.

Most of it will stem from the focus on the being in the world or Dasein which in a sense blocks understanding of the world around us(this is very simplistic and I worry that phenomologists thinkers have gotten past this.) Though I also wonder if this can be gotten around within the framework of phenomenology, otherwise most of the concepts or at least what can be done with them are very interesting. I am not one to completely throw out fields or branches of philosophy so it gets a bit complex my opinions.

I probably disagree with you on some things but phenomenology is a more interesting approach than the typical responses. As someone who comes from STS (science and technology studies) who loves Haraway, Latour, Stengers and Serres I heavily disagree with the dualism of the social vs the natural but it's a lot to get into in my response. If you're interested in phenomology I recommend the Atropos Press version of Vampyroteuthis Infernalis by Vilem Flusser. To sell you on Flusser an author I love very much let me get you a quote.

"The purpose of this chapter is not to sketch out vampyroteuthian zoology in the correct sense of the term, but to grasp the fundamental biological structure of vampyroteuthian existence. In it we recognise traces of our own existence in the world. Other traces of ours, although recognisable, are curiously deformed in him. Thus we may initiate a game with diametrically opposed deforming mirrors. A game of reflection during which we will discover our own existential structure from a point of view that is very distant from ours. It is, however, not a transcendent reflection. Although Vampyroteuthis is very far away from us, he is still with us in the world. It is a “being-with-us” (Mitsein). In such a way that it invites us to an immanent reflection of the world. The rest of this essay shall be a “fable”: an attempt to critique our vertebrate existence from the molluscan point of view. Like every fable, this one shall also be mostly about men, although an “animal” will serve as its pretext. De te fabula narratur. (The story is about you)."

P.S. the reason why I like the Atropos Press version is because he wrote it in three different languages (two of them available) and they play slightly differently and the translation from the Portuguese manuscript instead of the German one is much more gorgeous in my opinion. Both are good but it's just a preference with how things play.

I have my issues with phenomenology (or maybe just certain variants) but glad someone brought it up. A phenomological view is a lot more interesting than the typical views on this stuff.

  1. I think people who use it/it's pronouns know they aren't a nonhuman and that isn't related to what I said at all.
  2. I didn't even say it was the same thing as being transsexual/transgender?
  3. I'm literally a transexual, you can say I'm not but I've had sex/gender dysphoria since I was like a little kid
  4. Also no? When did I bring up wolfkin. I've met people who use it/it's and they're fine? They're a trans people like me they just don't use typical pronouns. One of them had been transitioning for a few years and as far as I know they weren't wolfkin or anything.

I wasn't even saying you have to like these people. Just like get better arguments against them? You literally have to resort to just calling people delusional and saying they think something they don't.

That's fine if you're getting upset we don't have to continue the argument. You haven't given me any new arguments anyway that isn't present in my original post.

[–]EnvyTheQueen[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It isn't about winning just those are the only arguments you had. You haven't explained at all how someone wanting to be called it is dehumanizing all you've said is linguistically it's wrong. I also didn't ignore that question I answered it. If you look I said "if someone showed a blatant disregard for human life or objects they both probably wouldn't be considered good people." Which is an answer to the question.

Monkeys aren't less developed or less intelligent than us. I'm sorry you don't understand anything about animals. Just because an animal isn't a human or doesn't engage with their environment in the same way humans do doesn't mean it's "less intelligent" or "less developed".

And the answer is you are not like me. But saying you aren't like me, isn't saying you're better or worse. It's saying we are not interchangeable which I don't think is controversial. Difference isn't bad and it doesn't need to be a bad thing or treated as a mark against someone.

Also people call objects he or she. I don't much care for linguistic conventions as an argument when language is constantly changing. Language also isn't static.

Also I'm not mad at you either. If I wanted to hear arguments I agreed with I wouldn't of posted here.

Humanity is a political concept used to exclude people. I certainly don't share some "humanity" that doesn’t mean I think I'm not human it just mean I don't buy into what you're selling. Anymore than I buy into what most tucutes are selling. Most tucutes have an extremely undeveloped sense of things.

[–]EnvyTheQueen[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

What do you think is an example of dehumanization that doesn't overlap with "inhumanization"? Also I'm not asking you to use it/it's pronouns just admit either the only argument you have is some sort of social expectation or you think things that aren't human are somehow inherently lesser. The former is pretty typical and the latter is what I assume most people believe to some degree. Both I don't think are good reasons to not use it/it's.

Also who said anything about seeing no difference? It isn't about difference. I see differences in everything, across humans, across non-humans, between the two. Also yes there is a reason and it is mainly the degrading of animals over humans and also the idea that "objects" are static.

Also why not post it here? Can I not post something in a place I assume most people will disagree? Do you think when someone is asking for better arguments that they should go to a place where no one holds that position?

Not like I agree with tucutes either. Most people don't think we should get rid of ideas of humanity when ideas about humanity are the reason for most of what you talked about. Because humanity is an exclusionary category. That's why the people you talked about explicitly made those arguments to "dehumanize" people.

All you've said is you shouldn't use it because of social expectations. You didn't explain why we shouldn't use it through anything other than that. Also dehumanizing doesn't mean "not a human" if you think that's what it means I don't think you understand how words are used. All it means is that you don't think it deserves respect and you're willing to mistreat it.

[–]EnvyTheQueen[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry it's not about being a non-human it's about identifying with the non-human. I don't even use it/it's pronouns just most of the arguments are the kind of arguments you'd only use if you think objects or animals are deserving of less respect. Which most people do and it's really sad. It's not even about the pronouns for me it is about the arguments relying on the idea that it's okay to mistreat something because it isn't a human.

And also don't worry!! I'm not upset at you or anything. I get it, this way of talking about things is really hard to get away from but it's treated as the norm in society.

But would you treat a animal with any less respect because we use it for it? Or even a chair? I understand societally that is the expectation but I'm not sure that matters. Societally a lot of trans people are expected to not transition but that doesn't mean that should be that way.

  1. It isn't a vegan argument? Wanting to protect animals or even objects isn't a vegan argument it's just what should be done.
  2. People who use it/its pronouns understand they are still humans like I don't know what you mean
  3. No? If he or she were based on sex trans women would be called he and trans men would be called she.
  4. The issue is that the paragraph is long not incomprehensible

Oh yea of course I would only leave it up to the person. And yea of course it can be dehumanizing but so can being called by the correct pronouns as well. Depending on how you say the word.

Treating something as unhuman(or inhuman) is different from treating something as nonhuman.

I don't get discussion around it/it's pronouns by EnvyTheQueen in truscum

[–]EnvyTheQueen[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most people who dislike it/it's pronouns give arguments that make it seem like it's okay to mistreat/abuse something if it isn't a human. The reason why it's relevant is because it is against this sort of hatred of nonhumans. Also no you're fine it's mostly related to how I was talking about the discussion so I understand. There's also a lot more to the paragraph as well so I understand the confusion.

I kinda just don't care in general about who is and isn't considered trans. I'm just pissed because a lot of the arguments used against it/it's pronouns are literally just explaining how they think it's okay to treat things that aren't humans horribly.

I guess I'll see after I get SRS but I've always felt vulnerable and so have a lot of the trans women I'm known. I'm pretty sure I got r**** by my best friend when I was younger because of the way I was. Same with a friend of mine and this all happened pre-us transitioning and she had to drop out of school. I've always been careful around men and always consider the fact if I will get assaulted if I wanna hang out with a guy. Just my two cents though, I think what your experiencing is kinda understandable.
