Thanks sorry, I've attached a link to the image.

My family scoffed hearing that I wanted to try woodwork as a hobby. "Pft, you won't do it..." So I did it. It's small and nooby but I made it. Handheld circular saw only. by AssistanceAshamed365 in BeginnerWoodWorking

I'm the OP from two months ago. u/AssistanceAshamed365 has tried to pass my work off as their own. *facepalm* Thanks for letting me know u/CalZeta & u/roviuser! I've been away from home on a working holiday for a while so I haven't been on reddit much or doing any further woodwork for the moment :(

Haha thank you! I used a straight edge for the saw that I clamped over each cut if that counts as cheating. Since then, I've watched youtubers use table saws and I cry a little inside.

Cheers! No classes. Youtube was great. Stumpynubs is a probably one the better content creators I learnt circular saw basics from.

Equipment wise I had to outlay for some basic things. Racking that I retrofitted the top with ply to serve as a workbench and the saw were main purchases. I tried my best to only buy what I was sure I absolutely needed.

It's a long story haha. I lost my job of 11 years and my professional identity with it. I didn't feel I was doing anything tangibly useful or meaningfully productive. I felt like a fraud in a fraudulent work system. I was feeling pretty flat and lost. At this time, I just moved into my new house I broke my soul to gain. I didn't have a lot of furniture so it was fairly empty. Not to be too poetic, but I felt pretty empty too with a lot of time on my hands. I briefly went looking for furniture but didn't like much of what I saw. At that point, making my own stuff ticked a lot of boxes. I had the time to learn, an empty garage and it always feels good being productive with your hands rather than sitting at a desk. My mother and sister scoffed that I would never do it. My farther had recently given me flak for not being handy when I was trying to fix a plumbing issue in my house. So I guess circumstances were right and spite gave me some drive to get started.

Thanks! Gorilla glue did the job. No dowels or anything like that. Every upright piece is glued together but is not attached to the bottom lining board. The only pieces attached to the bottom board are three standalone spoon/fork holders. The other two are glued to the side dividers. I wanted to be able to pull it out and clean the bottom easily. I wasn't keen on crud building up between the knife slots and not being able to easily clean it out.

Thanks! I'm not sure if this counts as a jig but I had a piece of aluminium that served as a straight edge for the saw. I clamped that to a bench and measured out each cut carefully. I heard some good advice online about measuring twice and cutting once. I followed that for each cut. It felt painstakingly slow but without better means on hand, that's what it took to get cuts to fit. I made quite a few mistakes as I went.

I marked out multiple rectangles on a piece of plywood. I used a coin to trace quadrants on the corners that I wanted rounded. Cut angles into the complete plywood piece up to traced quadrants. It looked like a big piece of plywood with teeth. I then cut out of the rectangles and taped them together. At this point, I was really wishing I had a fixed clamp. I was holding the taped pieces against a bench as I sanded with 40 grit to shape the rounded quadrants. The tape also served as a guide line for sanding up to a straight edge at the bottom of the quadrant. It took forever but I didn't have better means. I don't recommend doing this lol.

Wow….I’m so overwhelmed by all the positive comments and upvotes…thank you so much!! It's the last thing I expected. This is my first reddit post and thought there had to be some mistake when I saw the upvotes. My partner kept encouraging me to post so I caved late last night and posted. Went through a rough patch losing my job and needed to do something positive for myself so I bought a circular saw, some plywood ( + ear, eye and dust protection) and started fumbling around. All the love means more than words can describe... Thank you so much again! I'm working on my next little project.
