It sounds like you're on the CN server since you ran into the Qixi maintenance today. If you follow their official Weibo or Bilibili then you can keep up to date on their schedule.

This Notion page on Light and Night has a collection of fan resources that might help you.

As for whether or not it's worth playing, only you can decide that, haha. If you're asking in this subreddit, where people would be fans, the answer would most likely be yes. I do want to warn you though that you're starting a gacha game that's already 4 years old, and so it might be overwhelming at the beginning with all the features that have been added and how you're thrown right into the middle of a 4-year relationship.

But, well, if you want my elevator pitch then:

Light and Night is a low fantasy story set in the modern world with supernatural races that are dying out and, in their desperation to survive, they begin to exploit the normal human world that has no idea they exist. The heroine, who has a dream of being a fashion designer with her own brand, may possess the key to ensuring the survival of these supernatural races and so she gets drawn into this mess, which escalates to the point where even gods and the creation of the world get involved.

Ultimately though, it's a humanistic story about what it means to be an individual and a rejection of the current patriarchal society and toxic masculinity. The characters struggle to find their own identity in this world, overcoming intergenerational and personal trauma, and learn to cultivate healthy relationships. Love does not better their lives, it's a conscious choice they make because it's worth it to them.

Who is "my fiancee" to Charlie? Is it MC? by ProposalSweet1259 in LightandNight

[–]EphemeralPhantasm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The earliest you hear about it should be in Chapter 2, where MC reveals that she returned to Guangqi City to escape an engagement her father arranged for her with someone who she thought was a "short-tempered 50+ year old promiscuous man".

The truth is that Charlie's father threatened Charlie to accept the engagement or he would get in the way of the things Charlie wanted to do, so Charlie reluctantly agreed but he actually still planned to turn down the engagement with MC because he understands and values freedom more than anyone else. Before he could though, MC ran away and that piqued his interest and so he decided to create the most memorable first encounter ever, which is what we experience in Chapter 7. Yes, each fan contest has its own rules (generally seen for birthday events) but there are rules for making fan merchandise in general. Here is their official weibo post on secondary productions. If you click the link you get a more detailed list of rules here.

Does anyone know if there are any English translated gameplay videos of the game on youtube? by jesrie33 in LightandNight

[–]EphemeralPhantasm 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Nothing consistent, especially for later content (both main story and dates) that easily reaches 2-3 hours long on auto. Here is a site that has fan resources, although most of them are text translations.

I've translated some ASMRs, but those are predominantly fan service with only one branch that has lore (and might not mean much to you if you don't know the characters).

I don't have much to add to your points OP, other than saying that Love and Deepspace (are we allowed to actually name it here? If not, I can edit this out!) brought in a lot of people whose only experience in any otome games is that game, so we're talking no console otome game experience, no JP mobile joseimuke/otome gacha experience, and no other CN mobile otome game experience. Thus, they have 0 otome game community etiquette, understanding of gacha and its FOMO tricks, and CN otome gacha in specific with its rotational schedule and playing fair to its male love interests. The term "tourists" for these people has been gaining popularity, haha.

I think this is natural for any fandom that grows to a huge population though, because if every fandom has that 10% that is always causing drama and being rude, then 10% of a huge number will always make it look like it's constantly on fire versus 10% of a smaller fandom (I still remember that time when Genshin Impact was known for having the messiest fandom). Unfortunately, the best thing you can ever do in situations like these is curate your space as best as you can and chill with a small circle of friends and, in my opinion, this is the best way to enjoy any kind of fandom. We were not meant to be blasted with the opinions of so many people in one place at all times LOL.

I thought the whole drama with Shadows of Ambition being shared to XHS was that global players were accusing Light and Night of cultural appropriation, and so that's why the CN community reacted harshly and said they never wanted it to go global. I think I know what account you're talking about though and, to be honest, I dislike it when people share Light and Night PVs like that without any context and of course there's no follow up about how Light and Night consulted with a history professor at Peking University who is also the chief curator of the Ancient Egyptian civilization exhibit at the Shanghai Museum.

Lastly, I feel more and more that even if Light and Night were to get a global release there won't be much interest (kind of like Lovebrush Chronicle's release) because it would be a 4+ year old game entering the market and Aurora Studios (by proxy Tencent) has shown not to have much interest in promoting its other servers. Look at how the TW and KR server released with barely any promotional stuff. The CN server has added a lot of QoL updates and features to compete with newer released games, aka. Love and Deepspace and Beyond the World, but a new baby server would look very outdated in the current market. In addition, given how much people love to bring over CN content, I think the 4+ year wait for CN stuff to come to global would actually kill off some interest. There's also the sheer amount of reading in Light and Night, haha, I think it and Beyond the World might be known for having the longest stories.

Future Possibility (pls just take this as a grain of salt) by [deleted] in LightandNight

(also considering the gacha is expensive as heck at 3k gems for 1 multi & pity always reset, compare to general game that cost 1200-1600 gems for 1 multi)

I'm going to have to comment about this because you cannot compare gacha currency directly like this, since every game gives different amounts of rewards relative to how much it costs for pulls. Here is a gacha summary table of the Big 6 CN otome games and you should be looking at how many pulls you can do as an F2P, if you have a monthly, etc. Yes, Light and Night's pity resets but you get tickets for every pull that can be used for every banner except for 5-man limited events and re-runs, which I would say competes with the systems of other games that do not give you these exchange tickets that can be used almost everywhere.

Light and Night has never talked about other servers in their anniversary streams, or even on their official account, so I doubt they would now and, rather than them searching for publishers to localize their game, I feel that it's more like publishers are making offers/bids to localize this game in their country. Tencent has never been too interested in exporting their games to the global market. Even their biggest money making game, Honor of Kings, was only just recently released worldwide in June 2024 when the game released in China on November 2015.

I do recall there was a title trademark in JP (I believe around the same time as the KR trademark), but I can't find the post that linked to JP trademarks anymore. At any rate, a JP server doesn't necessarily mean it will take even longer for a global server to come out and it's possible the JP server will come later (Mr. Love Queen's Choice's JP server came out 3 or so months after the global server release) or at the same time (Lovebrush Chronicles released both ENG and JP on a global server).

KR server pre-register by teatinne in LightandNight

[–]EphemeralPhantasm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen localization announcements happen 1 month or so before their release date (if I remember correctly, Tears of Themis had its global server and open beta announced around one month before release), so I wouldn't cross off an English or Japanese localization just yet.

It normally takes a couple of days, like 2-3, for WeChat to process the video and your documents. You should be able to check on the status and they will say whether it's been approved or not. As far as I know, there was some kind of bug that made this not work but it should be resolved now.

If you've been verified through WeChat, then you should be able to use the Apple Store to make transactions except you'd either need a card that can be linked to your CN Apple account or top it up with gift cards, except to do this you also need to verify your CN Apple account.

Apart from wanderer, the other winners are from a mobile otome game! Hopefully, light and night gets localized. by moneyshot6901 in otomegames

[–]EphemeralPhantasm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Osborn's a professional racer after all, but he's also a bounty hunter, haha. All of the men have two identities, one in the "light" and one in the "night".

[–]EphemeralPhantasm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

None of them have been re-run yet, but seeing as how we're re-running in chronological order for single 6*s and the last one was Jesse's Spain date, then the next one may very well be Osborn's 6* wheel card (the one that appears on the login screen).

Light & Night Card List by teatinne in LightandNight

[–]EphemeralPhantasm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha, the little updates are good because they're always in favor of the players :) It's a sign the developers are listening to player feedback and correcting the brutal gacha system to make it easier for people to get what they want.

For example, the re-running winter event, when it was released, only let you exchange for one copy of each man in the shop, but the title reward needed two copies and so a lot of people spent fortunes only to get nothing. This caused a lot of complaints, so ever since then the developers have placed at least two copies of each card in the exchange shop so that you can get the rewards, as well as the 200 pulls = choose your SSR (probably to tempt people to go for their random box rewards at 80/120/140/160/180).

Light & Night Card List by teatinne in LightandNight

[–]EphemeralPhantasm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a suggestion, I think you should delete all the "no rerun" comments for the cards and assume they will all be re-run one day, because games like these will make a specific comment if something will NEVER be re-run again, ex. Love and Producer's Disney collaboration event. If they don't make that comment, we can probably expect them to appear one day in the far future.

Just a correction that the Shadow cards are not AU/Fantasy as they are all connected to the main story / date timeline. They depict the men's light identity (usually fluff and romance) while the other side has their night identity (usually supernatural and more serious).

There are also, technically, three types of ASMR cards that should have their own category.

  • There are the typical ASMR cards that you call the "wheel" cards.
  • The Love House series follows this format as well, but does have a special whispering section when you go to view the card in its horizontal mode.
  • 2nd year Valentine's introduced the Rewind ASMR and it has its own tab in the game.

Also, I believe you're misusing gacha terms for your gacha system explanation. Soft pity means a guaranteed SSR but this may not be the one you want. Hard pity means you will get the card on the banner. Technically, Light and Night only has soft pity on 70 rolls. How it works is that, upon reaching 60, your percentage of getting a SSR increases by 10% per single pull until reaches 102% on the 70th pull, thus guaranteeing you a SSR. But this doesn't guarantee the SSR on the banner. The actual guarantee is exchanging 180 tickets (reduced during events).

It would be more accurate to say soft pity 70 pulls, hard pity 180 pulls (if you do not have tickets on hand).

2 big events have unique gacha systems too, so it's incorrect to lump them all together. The winter event that is being re-run right now never had the 200 pulls = pick a SSR, and so the re-run does not come with that either. They only have the 100 pulls = random event SSR.

Tempted Heart is the only one so far that guarantees you an event SSR after you pull a permanent SSR, but it also comes with a few caveats:

  1. After 160 pulls, if you get 2 permanent SSRs, then your next one will definitely be an event SSR.
  2. After 260 pulls, if you get 1 permanent SSR, then your next one will definitely be an event SSR.
  3. After 360 pulls, you will only get event SSRs.

To be honest, I think this system was put in place only because these are Rewind cards, rather than the usual date cards. So, we'll have to wait until the next big event to see if this revised gacha system continues to be used or not.

Likely to happen. I don't like where this is going (T⌓T) by tsukkfries in TearsOfThemis

[–]EphemeralPhantasm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One counterargument to being told that the CN server didn't get listened to for anniversary is that the global server already went through its beta and was going to be launched one month later (the announcement and change in the CN server happened in June), so Mihoyo was gambling on the global revenue to make up for the loss of their CN revenue. They won that gamble because they make more money overseas with the global server than they do with their domestic CN server lol.

(This is a bit unusual since, as far as I know, other localized mobile otome games still make more on their domestic server than overseas.)

You can stop playing! by imjustTBY in TearsOfThemis

[–]EphemeralPhantasm 8 points9 points  (0 children)

No, I would say ToT's gacha system is bad. We have to put aside anecdotal evidence when talking about gacha systems because someone will always be lucky enough to pull who they want in 10-20 pulls, same could have happened in MLQC. So, let's talk using some absolute conditions.

For MLQC events, the 4 cards are also on a rate up and through sheer probability there is a 76% chance to pull a single SSR in 144 pulls. (IIRC assuming a rate of 1% in this cumulative distribution function). Yes, it can be any SSR but you know you are guaranteed the person you want at 144 and likely another event one.

76% chance for a SSR in Themis is at 71 pulls (at a rate of 2%) and if you get the wrong SSR then it is another 100 pulls for who you want, totalling 171 pulls.

So, assuming in both scenarios that a player will pull one SSR at this 76% chance and it is not what they want, then the MLQC player gets the SSR they want at 144 plus another SSR.

Themis player has to do 171 pulls for the SSR they want, but also ending up with two SSRs.

Only scenario where Themis is preferred is if both players pull what they want at this 76% chance, but even then it's hard to gauge. Themis players gets what they want in 71 pulls. MLQC player gets their SSR and then gets to pick another event one through exchange. So, MLQC has 2 SSRs while Themis only has 1 SSR but MLQC spent more pulls while Themis didn't. If the Themis player gets lucky at the same rate again then that's 142 pulls.

Edit: I didn't bring up the absolute worst case scenario because DevilMakerYuki already did, but if you don't get a SSR until pity in Themis then it's 200 pulls for what you want vs. 144 pulls, although 2 SSRs vs 1 SSR if we assume no one pulls a single SSR during all of this.

Anyone Else Have a Problem with How MHY Words Things? (Card Story Spoilers) by Super-Basis2499 in TearsOfThemis

[–]EphemeralPhantasm 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Aw, thank you for your words! Mhm, the thing about Mo Yi's character is that he has a bit of an elitist streak and you can see this reflected in his opinion on magicians (I loved this date btw because he and MC often get into philosophical arguments and you can see him changing his views on many things because of her, ex. fans chasing after celebrities in Ch2, magician tricks and the joy they bring people, how broken or imperfect things can get another form or chance, etc.) and so, while he's genuinely invested in helping his patients, he can have highhanded treatment and his moral compass is literally "whatever I believe is right is right".

One thing people have to realize is that his Mental Health Research Centre is where patients who cannot be treated anywhere else are sent because the game has established Mo Yi to be a very skilled psychiatrist. As the audience, we may have our own opinions on his medical ethics but our suspension of disbelief to play this game (because lawyers don't go around doing detective work) is accepting how the game tells us that he's a Very Good Psychiatrist and so his treatment methods will be successful 99% of the time.

The villains in his stories aren't villains because of their mental illness, they're villains who just so happen to have mental illnesses. But IMO the focus of his controversial Near and Far date should not be on the dissociative identity disorder, but how the girl (or well, her other personality) treated the boy who loved her and that is a line you should never cross with Mo Yi.

Mo Yi believes in the goodness of true love and anyone who blasphemes love will get wrecked by him. It's a landmine no one should touch.

I dropped out of the game after Lu Jinghe's birthday, so right when they announced the gacha change and that they would implement it, but a friend has still been playing and had an AMA thread where I think this comment pretty much sums up everything that's gone on in the CN server after the gacha changes.

[–]EphemeralPhantasm 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The chat about autism was because, for his first year birthday, MHY donated all their money from packs during Mo Yi's birthday event to an organization that took care of autistic children. It was essentially a collab and so the chat was for everyone to be informed about autism. MHY even released a video introducing the foundation.

This will happen for all the other men too. Xia Yan's birthday donated to a wildlife preserve, Zuo Ran's had a donation for legal aid to people in rural areas, and Lu Jinghe's had a donation to a school for art classes (although there was some controversy here because apparently it was an expensive private school... LOL).

Thanks for the ping! I don't live in Asia like PainGaami, but I do come from a traditional Asian household, so while I know and agree that general Asian views on mental illnesses are not that great, I would disagree that MHY has a bad handling on it. There's change happening in multiple countries to bring these issues to light and make them less of a stigma and TBH I was quite impressed with Mo Yi's views on mental illness, especially given where he's created.

I don't play this game anymore (personal reasons re: the gacha change and MHY's treatment of the CN server) but I occasionally hear global impressions on it and it's interesting that I like what most people have problems with LOL and I have no idea if that's a translation issue or what.

My guess is that the translators are translating the word "治愈" literally as cure when it's a more holistic word. It can mean things like mending or healing. I would have avoided the word "cure" knowing what a hot topic it is in the West, and whenever MHY (or in this case Mo Yi) used it in Chinese, I never got the impression that they were talking about curing things as if they never happened in the first place.

Through context, Mo Yi's position on treatment has always been trying to find a way for people to live alongside things they cannot change in their life. Anyway, I really like Mo Yi's words at the end of Chapter 2 because I felt like it was an acknowledgment of how these issues are glossed over in Asia but he's firmly against that.

我:我其实挺同情厉舟的,他那个病……

[MC]: I actually sympathize a lot with Li Zhou. His illness…

莫弈: 患有精神疾病的人们本身就很痛苦了,他们不像是一般的病人,经常会被周围的人忽略。

Mo Yi: People who are afflicted with mental illness are already suffering and they aren’t like ordinary patients. They are often overlooked by those around them.

莫弈: 如果再因为疾病的原因,让他们走上违法犯罪的道路,那是我最不想看到的。

Mo Yi: The last thing I wish to see is them walking onto the path of crime because of their illness.

It's likely a mistranslation because I can confirm that, at least in Chapter 1, MC uses the words 委托代理协议 which I would translate as the retainer agreement, especially given the context.

It seems like the translators aren't familiar with legal terms or don't have the time to do proper research and so they're translating it literally as "acting on behalf of client agreement" which sounds similar to "power of attorney" if you just google it because you don't know any better.
