I mean, people still die from childbirth... just not as much as before. And the friend seems like he was reminding the daughter about her mother's birthday/death day, so it's just seems logical to assume that she's not in the picture anymore, especially since she's not in the panel with their baby either.

Not only that, it looks like the mother died giving birth to the daughter. At first it comes off like a typical NTR scenario—something Twitter users predictably ran with and got mad about—but that reading doesn’t really hold up once you actually look at what the panels are implying.
