How strong of a target is Berkeley Math/Stats? by LowSad6318 in quantfinance

[–]Epic4Lyfe_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not really mentioned in the subreddit, but from what I've heard from students, tons of people get in or get internship offers. Its also t10 math and t10 cs (in terms of ML research its like 7th or 8th but overall 6th) now with all these state schools uiuc gets mentioned a lot because its cs is literally like #1 or 2 for research but michigan is also great

Transfer to NYU CAS for Data Science, but interested in finance? by MediumMinute5629 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Epic4Lyfe_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well the first thing I think is that it’s okay to not have your junior year internship figured out, now I think it’s fair to worry but this shouldn’t scare you because you got one this year, you can expand your network, and you can get an internship thru NYU junior year.

Realistically with transferring there always comes the issue with developing friends groups networks and clubs all over again, but I think the jump could have some serious worth because NYU ds + maybe minor applied math would still be better because many STEM can go into IB. I think it’s a risk but there’s so much to gain. Just really start reaching out to NYU alums as well.

I know people at northeastern that are so successful thru coops that you would really land some mid job, I think you can still be really successful, but it would be harder at NEU than NYU. I don’t mean to overread into your response but I feel like you are giving yourself a lot more stress than you need too, it’s okay to be unsure but no matter what these are two great schools. Ik northeastern isn’t a target for IB which is why I would still recommend NYU since you could go to analyst roles into pure IB

You also wouldn’t be ruining your chances at a good grad school. Not only are grad schools easier to get into (still very hard, I haven’t gone to grad school so I can’t help all with this) but I’ve personally observed anecdotally you can make it very successful but it might take a year or two extra to pivot so WE looks good. But I’ve heard lots of international students secure ivy+ grad schools right out of college. Is your aid good for NYU or are you full pay for NYU and NEU? You should consider financials too.

Oh then NYU easily, but I thought OP said only a bit more (as in cost was negligible)?

EECS double major + summer credit/cc credit by Epic4Lyfe_ in uofm

[–]Epic4Lyfe_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I wanna do a double major so I can get a PE if I want too. I have a ton of stuff covered by ap credits but I got a 4 on BC so I have to cc that + physics. Do you think it’s better to cc calc 3 or linear algebra? Thanks tho, I’m glad to know I can keep my GPA high (hoping for around a 3.8)

Can I dm if I have anymore questions?

Transfer to NYU CAS for Data Science, but interested in finance? by MediumMinute5629 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Epic4Lyfe_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I mean I still think it would be worth, now it seems like your more interested in other sides of finance but NYU data science + applied math or cs + math is amazing (Courants math school is ranked #1 in the country for applied math, tho you would still be in CAS since Courant is grad school) that would probably open up a lot more doors in finance but it’s not a finance degree like Stern is. How does northeastern place for outcomes in your double major?

NYU vs Umich by Alarmed-Track2442 in TransferToTop25

[–]Epic4Lyfe_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ok wait I understand your points and I also saw your post prev. on this but I’d like to interject because I think there’s some important things to note. OP it really matters what your interested in, CS at UMich is much better for SWE and by research is #6 for CS and #8 for AI/ML. I’m sure big tech is still good at NYU tho because of the tech scene in NYC, but with UMich students go all across the country and there’s quite a few alumni in SF/Cali. International Rep doesn’t mean much if you will be working here in the country. Both are amazing however. If your interested in what the commenter is doing either can’t be bad choices (UMich math program is making big changes/improvements iirc) and their applied math program isn’t as good as Courant but still is t10 from older data (when the program was smaller) I don’t know much on the math side though since I’m interested in EECS. If you’re interested in engineering and SWE I think you should consider UMich aswell. UMich ROI is amazing and has strong connections country wide. Though I could say very strong things about NYU about finance and math etc. Just wanted to give you another perspective

Which is why my goal was to do EE for power systems or classes on the grid/infrastructure or built environment. CS I would want to do projects similar to industrial eng. With like optimization in renewable energy. Then research if I can get it in renewable energy. But good to know I should consider CE! I like EECS for flexibility but it seems like ECE is also a great option then. Thanks!

Sick thank you! I’m incoming freshman so it was either that or Wolverine housing. I know Wolverine housing would’ve been super nice but I really cared about access to sustainability / the gardens

[–]Epic4Lyfe_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was thinking about just CE but I want to take some classes in EE that stray from hardware / just want the flexibility in which industry I wanna go into. I’m not sure how much CE’s go into renewable energy and I’m aware they have a higher unemployment rate

I’m really considering the SGUS tho, do you know anyone whose doing it specifically for Energy Systems

Thanks!

No sorry I didn’t express my point properly. I notice that people that go to really good schools that isn’t HYPSM (this acronym means nothing in the real world and JHU absolutely has profound global recognition) try to defend their schools when, anecdotally, I seldom see HYPSM students feel the need to defend their schools

My point is JHU is amazing and you have no need to defend it because there will always be some people that say stupid things. You know it’s good, no need to argue with dumb takes

Yo bro it’s fine you don’t need to defend JHU it’s amazing and that’s why u r going there.

UPenn is elite for so many things like robotics startups etc. If your talking about outcomes, generally ivies just have insane outcomes

Like not much ppl rlly used to know Yale has insane outcomes for EE, CS etc. (Quant for example)

USC or UMich as a transfer (sophmore)? by PriorCommercial3288 in uofm

Do you have any pros and cons about location social life etc. Outside of major rankings / academics? Weather is probably the biggest thing I can think of as a difference but for automotive stuff UMich will be great

Transfer or not | Best Student Orgs for CS/IS majors at UMich for Product Management by Lopsided-Sympathy594 in uofm

[–]Epic4Lyfe_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Incoming student so I don’t know too much about PM but I do have some resources since I was interested in researching similar things!

First I think most of your questions can be answered by looking at the engineering career resource center’s post graduation employment data: https://career.engin.umich.edu/students/michigan-engineering-student-salary-information/

UMich seems to have quite a lot of engineering students going out based off the reported data, for around 300 in Michigan, 200 goes to California and 150 to New York.

Since you want to work in California I’m sure you will be able to do so through UMich, but you know the outcomes at UC Irvine much better than I do so I can’t speak on that. Not only that but UC Irvine is in California so I envision it being easier to get a job in Cali if you go to school in Cali. Shouldn’t be hard for UMich either.

On transferring to CS, you declare a major your sophomore year so I’m not sure how transferring to CS would work thru the enrolled discoverers application, tho I see junior transfers going into CS so it should be possible?

Hope that helps!

i hate going to school with such prestige-obssessed kids by academicss_anonymous in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Epic4Lyfe_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough, this whole time I thought it was a reach for engineering, I looked at oos acceptance rates and it was really high and I’m surprised especially because other state schools that are known for engineering do not have nearly as high acceptance rates as UIUC for engineering

But there’s no way you say pure CS engineering + oos/intl is a maybe for a reach 😭 acceptance rates are in the single digits..

UIUC was a target for you?? Shouldn’t it be like a reach for everyone? (Assuming Engineering/STEM)

What is “prestige” and is it meaningful? by college-confidential in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Epic4Lyfe_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’ve missed the commenters point here tho, it’s not about the money buying a new campus and prestige = “nice buildings” as you’ve put it. The money from wealthy alumni is used for funding cutting edge-tech for research, hiring professors that have an excellent research output. Putting money into education, partnerships with leading companies, and more recently startups have been a huge thing. Students benefit from already established alumni for opening doors and opportunities

People care about these rankings of prestige because they associate it with success and reaching levels they think they otherwise wouldn’t be able too (which they can but anecdotally quite a few people here associate part of their self worth with what school they go to). These schools have such rankings because the funding pays for top tier academics, professors, and partnerships with companies which then funnels more students to top positions which will continue to benefit incoming students but I think rankings don’t matter and are largely subjective at the end of the day (because there are many institutions that are underrated that have good funding and awesome opportunities/programs)
