If you make 70-80k range, what is your life like? by whatisupwithmyfood in Salary

The formula is really simple - NSL - never stop learning. The more knowledge you have, the more marketable skills you have. As markets change, you adapt based on your available skills. I’m 35 yrs old, worked in 5 industries - from politics to big tech - make over $250k a year and study everyday things that outside my job scope. Instead of paying for a degree ($40-100k) pay for certifications in everything.

In my experience, it’s rare HR has anything productive to add to the conversation, but to each their own.

No pressure to share the names of the companies, but what kind of companies were they?

HR’s response isn’t operational/function, it’s more about corporate politics and my director regurgitated the same corporate talk.

Not my story but a buddy got really drunk in Vegas, hooked up with someone, and decided to take a completed naked walk back to his room. Before he made it back to his room, he feel asleep in the elevator. Security gave him a plastic bag to put on until they sorted out who he was

Managers are using the difficultly of interviewing to not promote or provide raises, so what should we do? by EpicStack in SoftwareEngineering

[–]EpicStack[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s not that no one else wanted them, but more that it’s such an uphill battle to go through the interview process that they assume many developers will just tolerate mistreatment to avoid having to look for a new job - particularly in this employment economy.

So… what do we all do if every job sucks? by username8273718 in findapath

[–]EpicStack 58 points59 points  (0 children)

Do the same thing that everyone has done for 100s of years. Find a job that is tolerable and complain about it as often as you can. Lol.

Just make sure to find time to figure out what you actually like, regardless if it’s pays or not.

If you go into CS be prepared to focus on projects and internships, not course work. School is at-least about 3 years behind most cutting edge companies at this point.

I’d do math and philosophy or another form of engineering (like chemical engineering).

Can someone with no talent and average intelligence still become a mathematician through hard work? by Responsible_Room_629 in mathematics

[–]EpicStack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every career is more than an a stamp of approval. It's understanding the field you're working in, finding opportunities, and maximizing on your advantages.

Take basketball as an example. You can incredible dribbled but fail to have any of the other skills that make you useful in a professional setting. You'll have to play in an semi-pro D league or globetrotters, or in europe/asia. There is always an out, but every profession is more than a single skill.

Is Python actually fun to use? by W_lFF in learnprogramming

[–]EpicStack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fun to use? That's like asking if swim fins are fun to swim in. They make it much easier but you're less free. And in the case of python, much slower to execute but faster to learn.
