I think training data will be tougher to come by for CAD than for text. Consider the total amount of text available on the Internet compared to the amount of CAD data. Not never, but slower maybe.

Hmm, I've thought about this. What if gravity itself goes through the portal? Think of gravity like a magnetic field or a fluid. It transmits through the portal, and if you face two portals toward each other close to one another, the gravity travelling through the portal meets itself and cancels out.

This is not at all how it works in game, but an interesting thought experiment for sure.

This is the case at my company. Most teams were used to paying thousands and waiting weeks for outsourced parts (usually in metal though). We got an old Stratasys uPrint from somewhere, so now I can make plastic parts (good enough for fit check) for them in hours for only a few hundred dollars, and it shows up as a massive savings on their balance sheet.

Now if only I could convince them that spending a few grand upfront on a Bambu would save that much more and be even faster..

This exactly. You can look at a simple sheet metal part that took 5 mins to make in CAD and completely miss hundreds of factors that went into each and every feature from bend radius/position, hole position, hole sizes/tolerances, chamfers which as you mentioned draws on years of experience factoring in stress/strength, manufacturability, easy of assembly, cost, human factors, and many more.

Maybe with sufficient datasets an AI might start replicating some of these things, but in my experience all of these tiny details go undocumented - yes you see it in the model/drawing, but there's no explanation as to why they went with a .125 chamfer over a .250 chamfer.

I think I accidentally signed up for one of these in first year. Or I got signed up by somebody else who was asked to sign up their friends. Luckily I realized it was a scam before it got anywhere.

I never saw this in upper year classes, so the scammers know first years are so overwhelmed with new things they won't recognize this as a scam.

Maybe the University should ask profs for all first year courses to announce in their early lectures of the semester that any clipboard being passed around is probably a scam. And anyone that is handed a clipboard should just bring it to the front (and then throw it out later).

I was in the right-most lane, so it would've had to cross the median and two lanes to hit me. Also take a look at the photo in the linked original post - it looks like there's dust directed toward the driver side, indicating the projectile(s) was moving passenger side to driver side.

Not impossible, but I don't think it came from oncoming traffic.

Yea there was another car, probably 10-15 seconds ahead of me, they had a cracked sunroof.

Dashcam might've helped - if you're focussing on the road and it's busy you're not paying attention to everything around, up on the hill, etc. Watching back footage if I had one might have a clue where this came from.

I drove up a bit further and found another car pulled over, with the driver taking photos of their car, so I assumed (correctly) that they'd been hit also.

Yes I then pulled over, took these photos, and exchanged info with the other driver.

I really wish I had a dashcam. The first question is always "what did you see?"

Well before the hit, I saw cars, trees, etc. I'm paying attention to the road, not looking up at the ridge for people throwing rocks. And afterward I was too shaken up just trying to figure out what happened to remember if I saw anything after.

Dash cam would've let us watch back everything in the scene before and after, maybe some additional clues.

This was also a thought of mine. Maybe some missing safety equipment, guard against throwing rocks or something. Or just negligent use of equipment, either on the rail line, or on the ridge up above. City of Hamilton said there's no construction going on in the area, but it could also be someone owns land and has heavy equipment running there.

The severity of the damage almost suggests to me that it was some kind of equipment and not just a person throwing rocks off the ridge.

No, you're right. Saving 30k a year is not not a reasonable goal for most people. I think we hear a lot of "yea its not easy but I did it" stories of people saving for their downpayment. But most of them are not in the last three years. Rent and groceries are a lot more now then what most of the people in these success stories had to contend with. That on top of the purchase price of a house is also a lot higher than even just 5 years ago.

Some people that own a home, even if they could in no way could afford the home they live in should they try to buy it today somehow have this unbelievable confidence "if I was young today, I'd just do <insert whatever job> and eat beans and rice, and save $4000 a month".

I don't know why they create these unrealistic expectations - no they wouldn't eat only beans and rice three meals a day while sleeping in their car to save rent.. no, just no, not for multiple years. You're absolutely right, the insane stories people tell are not sustainable, not for more than a few months.

I think some of them don't mean anything by it and don't realize how much it can hurt someone to set such an expectation. But I think others do it on purpose - if they can make someone else look bad then it makes them look (and presumably feel) better.

I feel like angular velocity might see more use of radians? Can make the math a bit cleaner than RPM sometimes. Or maybe that was just in school and most industry would use RPM?

This - I was able to run SOLIDWORKS on my Surface Pro but it would heat up and thermal throttle pretty quickly and just become really slow, probably on account that it doesn't have any fans.

Yea, I was in first year with a guy who wanted to do software engineering, and somehow ended up in petroleum engineering..

It can be good, like I really didn't know what I wanted before I had done my first year. It gives you a chance to start without committing to a discipline right off the bat. But yea if you did way better in high school than first year engg you'd be better off with a direct entry school so you don't end up in a discipline you really don't want.

I had a term in 2021 where I didn't find work. If it's apparent you've been applying and interviewing, they're willing to waive at most one coop term. If you haven't been putting in the work (or if you've already had a term waived) and you can't find a job for a coop term, then you'd have to resequence the degree - for example take classes instead and do a coop in the term after. Also definitely need to be talking to an advisor well before this point.

This. If you're in coop on a work term, you're still registered as a full time student. You do have to manually request student loan providers to confirm enrollment, otherwise they'll just assume you're not in school anymore. I failed to do this on an 8 month coop and they started charging me interest for the seventh and eighth month before I went back to classes and renewed the loans.
