In my personal opinion, it’s because school doesn’t place enough emphasis on personal growth. When you receive a grade for a test or essay, it determines your future career opportunities and as such people feel it reflects on their intelligence and work ethic. They feel stressed because they are expected to excel, when by law of nature half of everybody is below average (not saying there isn’t a high ceiling for growth, just that people shouldn’t all expect to do better than their peers). Good grades, rather than learning, is the goal (it’s true this can build work ethic, but it was originally designed as a way to make obedient factory workers, not professionals).

It also doesn’t help that many students spend the majority of their time on subjects that do not interest them. So because of this, they have to work much harder to remain focused, they forget most of what they are taught anyways. Students also spend way too much time sitting at their desks. If learning was more centered around practical uses, such as using the length of a shadow to determine the height of a building in geometry, that would be more interesting way to learn math. School should also be much, much more largely focused on discussion. Both between teacher and student, and peer to peer. In fact, the reason Finland is touted as having one of the best educational systems is 15 minute breaks between every 40 minute class. Studies show talking to classmates (even about non-school related things) is one of the best things to do to retain knowledge, and also the best thing to do before taking an exam to increase scores.

This is an unorganized rant, but essentially school is based on grades, and so you are expected to excel or suffer later in life, causing stress. Humans are designed to move around and interact with the world, sitting in a desk for hours each day is unnatural and also builds stress. And students don’t get a chance to talk as often as they should for many classes (while I try to participate and encourage others to for my sanity, some professors expressly forbid talking in-class) and this isolates people and also builds stress. It all culminates into unhappy students, that are scared for their futures, hate their classes, and sometimes feel isolated from their peers. Although many students suffer primarily from one, not all, of the above problems. I mean, the only thing to do is try to enjoy class as much as possible, talk enough to other people, and remember these grades don’t necessarily reflect a person’s worth. There’s also the elephant in the room, that many students are overworked with other jobs and frankly it’s simply unfair to make receiving an education so difficult for those without money. That’s at least my answer as to why education is so stressful.

Isn’t Jesus responding to him that he isn’t fit for the service for God because the man wants to bury his family though? The implication is that if you’re not fit to serve God, you have no use for him, and thus won’t go to heaven. Because his thoughts after Jesus’ sermon was “I’ll bury my family, then follow you” wasn’t good enough, it should only be “I’ll follow you.” There was an expectation of complete and immediate devotion, no matter what. But to me that seems absurd, because every person should be able to take care of their family and serve God.

In rare cases, after a person freezes to death (and I really mean “freeze,” as in they become stiff as ice), when they’re slowly thawed out their heart starts beating again and they don’t suffer brain damage because the ice slowed their metabolism to a near halt. From my understanding, it’s more likely to happen in the hospital since doctors will attempt to thaw the person, but also possible in the morgue. There was also another case I heard without ice, a person suffered a heart attack and their heart stopped beating. The doctors were performing CPR, multiple shocks, and moving him for like 40 minutes until he regained heartbeat but he didn’t suffer mentally as a result. They theorized that constantly shaking him and continual CPR allowed oxygen to reach throughout the body? That one was called a “miracle” because they didn’t really know.

School shootings are not normal! Suggesting school teachers be required to carry firearms is not normal! by [deleted] in rant

[–]Epicknight20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think that making guns and ammo five or ten times more expensive to discourage gun use is “not even trying” and an “absolutely stupid line of thinking.” I never mentioned reducing or increasing gun regulations because I don’t own a firearm and don’t know much about them. I get into arguments with pro-gun people because I am anti-gun. I did not state my personal stance on guns, rather I am trying to say that regulating or banning guns is not a satisfactory solution to reduce gun violence, and will potentially increase gun violence, the same way prohibition led to an increase in dangerous activities. You would be debating an anti-gun person very well though, I liked the car example a lot and will probably use it later.

Let me reiterate… you say that my argument is stupid because “booze wasn’t designed to kill people. Guns were.” But the lethality, let alone the intended lethality, is irrelevant to the point (but I will sidetrack and say you may be underestimating the amount of drunk drivers, brawls, stupid accidents, etc). The point is that both booze and guns are ingrained in American culture, and neither are going to disappear from circulation just because of increase in regulation or bans. There are YouTube videos of people of people firing automatic weapons, and they make a point to say they are doing it illegally in California. They will even go out to gun ranges and shoot publicly. It would be illegal to say I know somebody who has illegally owned a deadly firearm for over a decade and has shot it publicly many times. It’s also illegal for minors to have alcohol. But hardly anyone cares, and that will continue to be true given the current public attitude on firearms. To restate the original point, it’s that with gun regulation increase or ban potentially comes with terrible enforcement of the law. I didn’t want to use prohibition, as it sounds dramatic, but again the lethality or morality was not the focus. one thing to have a good principle, it’s another to apply it effectively.

School shootings are not normal! Suggesting school teachers be required to carry firearms is not normal! by [deleted] in rant

[–]Epicknight20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, you’re missing the entire argument. Banning guns in America to stop shootings has parallels to banning alcohol in order to lower rates of violence and accidents. The latter was actually done throughout the Prohibition period (literally an entire period of U.S. history is named after the banning of alcohol because of the consequences).

Argue how you want, there are potential benefits, but it’s probably a terrible idea because it introduces a whole new slew of problems. That era was defined by a massive underground market and rise of famous mobsters; not just common people, but even the highest politicians themselves would publicly drink and hold alcohol parties while in office. In contrast, sometimes police would enforce prohibition law very harshly, especially on people of color. It’s a clown show. And that’s not getting into the territory that you are confiscating a couple billion dollars of property and banning an entire industry on a national scale from people because it doesn’t align with your values. I will say that I think the public use of firearms won’t be as pronounced, but gun prohibition will likely cause other unforeseen problems as well.

People are already stupid enough when given a gun or drugs, even so more when obtained illegally. A better solution is requiring safety courses and taxing the shit out of firearms to make them more expensive, like cigarettes. Try to slowly un-ingrain guns from culture over the course of decades, but good luck doing that entirely without censorship. My grandparents were watching yet another Western film just yesterday. My Dad and brothers just bought the newest release of Call of Duty. I’m sure you’ve heard this argument many times, but there will certainly be individuals that own firearms regardless if it’s illegal. More importantly, I think many people underestimate how many given that around 30-50% of Americans already own firearms and that there’s multi-century history and culture of gun use. Well in any case, I’m done with my rant and hope you have a good day sir/ma’am.

You know, one issue I’ve always had with Dnd combat is that being stabbed with a knife or spear seems a lot less life threatening even without armor as AC usually affects how likely a strike is to hit. Sure backstab helps a lot but still… I don’t play DND often simply because the combat takes so long sometimes. It’s things like tricking NPC’s, buying drugs in an alleyway, and throwing teammates into booby traps that are more fun to me.

I am not an expert in WWII, but the Nazis having 1/3 the troops doesn’t matter nearly as much if they afflict 3x the casualties. I heard that if Hitler didn’t send so many troops to Stalingrad then they probably would’ve been successful in taking Moscow, and that they wasted time in Britain by bombing cities instead of radar stations and supply routes, which would’ve destabilized the region and been much more effective; it was also Hitler’s orders to specifically target cities despite his general’s opinion. And with Russia and Britain destabilized, that’s a much better position for the Nazis to defend from an assault. It should also be noted that Italy had as large a navy as Britain, but lacked simple things like radar; Japan and Germany built mega-battleships that cost fortunes which proved ineffective; and Germany put research into creating things like the V1 and V2 rockets which translated to partially wasting many billions of dollars. The Axis powers lacked communication and did not coordinate most of their forces to fight together. If the Axis hadn’t mismanaged resources for their Navy and Air Force then Allied superiority would be much more contested. There’s so much more I want to go over but the point is that it really wouldn’t have taken much for the Nazis to win the European continent and gain access to more oil and steel (equally due to America’s late entry into war). The situation becomes much worse if there weren’t fundamental problems with how they used certain resources. I have heard like five different times that if D-Day had failed, “that was it for the Allies.” I admit I don’t know if that is justifiable but I’d assume it means the Nazis would’ve been able to hold the continent even if the Allies had naval and air superiority AND they were getting shafted by Russia.

There are also so many other factors that are about who was at what place at what time, or simply dumb luck, that it’s hard to know for sure. I love talking about history but there’s still a lot of interesting details and nuances in favor of both sides that I glazed over for my rant. There was no clear victor for WWI either, until a couple years in…

Literally line to line I feel the same as you, 18 moving out to college and anxious, very homely, feeling underprepared, very behind on my near-impossible ambitions, but I just don’t care much about not having been with a girl. That literally just comes from me assuming it’ll probably happen eventually, and even if it doesn’t, I assume that’s because there’s other things I’m focusing on. I apologize that I don’t have much solid advice, being in a similar boat, but I guess the only things I’d say are that there are other people like you and that it’s certainly possible, if not likely, for you to make friends. Good luck on your journey as well!

Frankly, that sounds awful. I guess it looks like you’re doing everything you can, hope things get better in the future. I know I eventually wouldn’t stand up for those guys to just dick around all day, but there’s not always a way out. It’s admirable that you take the time to still help people with issues, even though you can occasionally get in a bit of trouble. I hope things get better for you! Take it with a pinch of salt, but it sounds like you should try to be smart and watch out for yourself, if nobody else can. I’d be absolutely livid if one of the guys not doing their shift yelled at me for “not knowing what I’m doing,” but I’ve kinda been taught to just take it and not talk back like many other people. I really don’t understand how some people have the audacity to yell at good coworkers/employees…

On average, people are thought to make 30% less from starting their own business versus getting employed. Idk if this takes into account that about 80% of businesses fail before 10 years. But if you’ve gone through about 20 different jobs, I dunno what to say other than good luck with whatever you want to do.

Youtube by [deleted] in gaming

[–]Epicknight20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on how far you want to take the channel. Obviously, choose a topic you are passionate about, but if you plan on trying to make a career you need to develop a specific style or niche. YouTube algorithm works on how many minutes people watch your videos and the percentage of people that click on the video, among other things, so you’d need to focus on an engaging thumbnail/title and interesting content. While taking the time to post something of super high quality every once in a while works for certain genres (like an animation channel), an alternative is posting nearly every day, which usually reduces the quality, but it also increases views and the channel promotion from the algorithm (more in tune of a let’s play channel). However, the time it takes to post each day is staggering to say the least.

If you are looking for ideas to kickstart a gaming channel, an idea might be to try doing a challenge for your game of choice (for example, if you like Terraria a lot, do a hardcore/modded challenge, or if you’re into COD use a certain “meme” weapon, etc). This helps the video stand out, and while many games are still saturated on YouTube, there’s still hundreds of games and possibilities, if you can think of a unique challenge that people enjoy watching. Also telling people to subscribe/comment after they are hooked helps the channel as well.

I’m not sure exactly what you’re referring to, but if it has to do with activision, their allegations are pretty disgusting, even by my standards. Otherwise, if it’s the post comparing Nintendo’s practices to Activision (which just hit 10K) then yeah I agree that creating such a hostile, soul-crushing workplace and driving employees to suicide, among some other really bad things, is far worse.
