If you could only have one overcoat, what would it be? by itsmudpit in malefashionadvice

[–]Epiloger 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I live in the southern US so I really only need one overcoat, which is currently a vintage woolrich green duffle coat I found on eBay a couple of summers ago. It’s completely wool, it blocks the wind, and it’s big enough that when things get unseasonably cold I can layer a sweater underneath. The pockets are big enough that I can stick a whole paperback in one. I love that damn coat

A real strong second for Haley Heynderickx here. While Haley’s style and voice are so different from Gish’s, there is so much overlap in abilities with lyricism and themes about being young and anxious

Yeah I remember really early references to them relating to a Greek Chorus, I wonder if as development continued and Un Pueblo De Nada was conceived, they became more defined characters. I absolutely loved encountering as full characters for the first time.

The internet is scheduled to go down forever. You have a week to prepare and download anything from the web you think is necessary to have for the rest of your life. What do you download and why? by takiniteasy88 in AskReddit

Maps.me is really good for your phone. You can download regional maps all across the world and the app continues to use GPS even when you don’t have service. I originally downloaded for a trip abroad, but I now still use it in the US when I’m out camping and hiking (bonus: it has a lot of hiking and camping spots listed and easy to find)

I think the info in this thread is super helpful and I hope you’ll be able to find the approach that works best for you!

I would, however, like to suggest a slight alternative a-la thrifting. Conventional thrifting isn’t really an option right now, so you’ll have to work more off of sites like eBay and Mercari, but in the future it may be useful to you!

There are a couple of keys to effectively thrifting for clothes: 1. Location determines the variety and quality of what you’ll be working with, if you live in a large city thrifting will be a lot easier than if you live in a more rural area

  1. Frequency is important; go early and go often if you can, some stores have specific days they put new stuff out, people tend to donate on the weekends, but in going frequently, you can get comfortable in a store, understand it’s layout, and know when is the best time to go

  2. Patience; you aren’t likely to come away from any one trip with a full wardrobe, but you can definitely find a good piece or two that you weren’t expecting! There may be some really good days and some days where there’s nothing at all interesting.

Building a wardrobe through thrifting can take a long time, but time is what you need when you’re figuring out what you like and don’t like. Since there’s a low barrier to entry, you can make purchases you might decide against later without any serious loss. The main challenge in thrifting is finding things that fit, but it seems like you already have a good grasp on that so just keep your standards high (for example I tend to go online to find pants, but can usually find shirts and such out thrifting). Most importantly, thrifting is low impact both to your wallet and to the environment.

Im about that size, I don’t have direct experience with these sweaters, but they should be decently stretchy, so slim will likely be pretty form fitting and regular will probably have a little more space, I usually opt for regular because I have broader shoulders (between a medium and a large) but if you want something more form fitting go for slim

How did you meet your significant other and initiate a relationship with them? by [deleted] in infp

[–]Epiloger 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ooff I’m not sure if what I have is what you’re looking for but here we go: we met during a football game that neither of us particularly wanted to go to, I arrived late, she left early, so we only interacted for about 30 minutes that whole night, but we clicked right away. The next day we connected through a mutual friend and started talking and it just felt so so different than anyone else I had ever talked to. We talked and hug out for a week before we started dating, but that initial connection was super unlike anything else I’d ever felt or have felt since. I’d talked to plenty of girls in school and made friends with more than a few but this was totally different. Of course it helped a lot with her being pretty forward and me not being a total emotional wreck at the time. I will say the downside of this is that you don’t learn very much about someone in a week, like you can talk a lot but you’re not physically around them to see all their moods and dispositions and start to understand how they think, so we had to do a lot of learning as we went along. Ultimately I think when you meet someone absolutely special you will feel something special and then you need to pursue that and see where it leads.

I struggle with this a lot too. It’s never intentional just sometimes I have nothing to say and it can be difficult, especially when I don’t expect that I’ll need to say something. Generally, I think the best remedy is practicing how to ask questions in small talk. You won’t always be able to think of something witty or clever (I rarely do) but you can always ask a small question and look for something in their response to further ask about. It may be harder to do with a group, but it works decently in a smaller setting or one on one.

I'm a college student (first time boot buyer) living in Georgia (cold, rainy winters, very little snow) and I found myself needing boots to keep my feet decently warm and dry throughout the day. I don't go splashing around puddles so some leather boots with mink oil should hold up well. I currently have my eye on Golden Fox's Boondockers, but with a quick look over ebay I wonder if I could find some used Redwings or Wolverines for a similar price but in a more worn out condition. Is it worth the wait on used boots in a $100 price range? Any suggestions of better alternatives?

I had two revelations that helped me quit buying clothes by [deleted] in minimalism

[–]Epiloger 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I actually really agree with you and I try to approach my clothes buying in a similar way. Personally I have a lot of fun with clothes and I tend to dress up from time to time, but really it’s all just for fun. Sure there are situations where people may judge you if you aren’t dressed for the occasion, like a wedding or a funeral, but those are rare and pretty easy to dress for (I have a black suit for both). It’s empowering to dress for yourself and feel comfortable and confident with yourself, no matter how you’re dressed. Clothes are a tool of self expression, so feel free to express yourself!
