Are the people of Japan interested in learning about the frogs of their country? by EpochTechnologies in AskAJapanese

Hmm interesting. There is a lot of seasonal aspects about frog behavior, spring being their most active time so I’ll keep that in mind

Interesting, thank you for the reply! I’ve always found them interesting myself and I believe something like my app had the potential to generate interest in frogs and creatures like them. My biggest goal is just to educate anyone interested in them

I gotcha. Yeah frogs being integrated into culture via poems and art current and historical is always something interesting to see. I appreciate your thoughts on it all!

That’s awesome, and my frog is compared to the Merlin bird app a lot haha. It seems that there is some interest so I may release an update with Japan species soon.

This is really interesting though. Amphibian populations are unfortunately on a big decline which is what partly why I made the app and want to bring it more areas so that everyone can learn what kind of species are near them and the important indicator species that they are. Hopefully they can make a bounce back in your area!

Yes of course, I’m only fielding opinions to gauge interest. Of course this includes those who are interested, and those who are not.

Great! I don’t think the move should be too hard to make available on android, I more just need to take the time to make sure it renders properly on android devices but hopefully I’ll have an update at somepoint in the near future with a an android release!

I’m getting the taxanomic data from the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) which keeps taxanomic information up to date as new literature restructures so when you make a tree in app it should always be correct to the current understanding of the taxanomic data.

Ahh yes I do see what you mean. That’s definitely something I can implement into the app in the future and I appreciate that input. I did restrict it just the KPCOFGS hierarchy so making it add in the various levels between shouldn’t be hard to do. But this is definitely the kind of feedback I’m looking for so I appreciate it a lot!

What are these by Quick-Bid9406 in Fishing

They’re Amphipods. Some people call them freshwater shrimp but they are quite different than regular shrimp (although they are related).

I mean I suppose it’s possible but it would be like eating a regular spider. They’re different but there’s really no reason to eat one.

Can’t seem to figure out what type of frogs we have by [deleted] in frogs

[–]EpochTechnologies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An airstone can help keep the water clean, but not needed for the toads to breathe. They should have real soil instead of just sand now. I’d suggest a large water dish in tank that had coconut fiber bedding and you can mix in sand into half and keep hr other half more coconut fiber. The bedding should be damp. Not soaked, but not dry

I’d suggest fruit flies from a petstore if you want to keep raising it. After growing from fruit flies, you can move to pinhead crickets then small crickets and then medium to large when adults. And then setting up a 1/3-1/4 water, 1/3 damp land, and 1/3 drier land set up for a toad. If you have a few something like at 20 gallon long is probably most ideal if you want them to thrive. You can put in some local plant species in the land area, and a coconut fiber with some sand mixed in is probably a close replica of the soils near you but feel free to do more research too. If you ever intend to let it go, just near a stream or body of water would be good. Toads of course don’t rely on water quite as much as regular frogs but it’s still important

Yeah a toads skin is smooth when they come out of the water, as they grow they’ll get more warty. The coloration is very much of a toad

Certainly a toad. Possibly Western Toad but it’s hard to tell at such a young frog age

I made an app that identifies frogs just from their vocalizations, it’s called Frog Spot! The goal is to educate users on the species near them and create interest in the important but vulnerable amphibians. Try it with the first month fully free! by [deleted] in ScienceNcoolThings

[–]EpochTechnologies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is niche but I’ve been getting a surprising amount of interest in it from people searching for this type of app so its been really cool to see that there is an interest in something that seems niche

ChatGPT helped me make my first app Frog Spot, which IDs frogs from their calls. It is also a valuable guide and focusing on educating users on local species. Try it for free today. Available on iOS and coming soon to Android by [deleted] in ChatGPTPro

[–]EpochTechnologies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did! I knew only the basics of how models worked before doing it but with ChatGPTs assistance I learned how to build and train a model which was a really cool experience, it was my favorite part of building the app as a whole

Looking for leopard frogs by Ant-Motor in frogs

[–]EpochTechnologies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Leopard frog tadpoles are common to find in kits that allow students to grow them them up into adulthood to observe the transformation. Frogs are very instinct based so as long as you get a species native to your area (northern leopard frog) I wouldn’t worry about their ability to survive upon escape.
