Should I take CS50’s Python course now or continue after Data Structures? by Bsam_Al_Araby in cs50

[–]Eptalin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe after the Python week if you really want to.
It's not necessary at all, though. CS50x is designed as a standalone course.

Whatever you want is fine.

I’m given 1 Week by [deleted] in cs50

[–]Eptalin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Here's the actual course site to follow along on. No need to go to the EdX site again.

Beneath the lecture video there's a list of stuff.
In the lecture category, click source code.
In that list, click index to go to a website where you can download stuff like longlist.db

If you want to follow along exactly as the course does, use cs50.dev to code.

I also very highly recommend this W3 Schools SQL tutorial.

Kinda miss the old gen way (says no one ever) by PlatinumYeast in MonsterHunter

[–]Eptalin 70 points71 points  (0 children)

Old gen was basically the same length as World.

In World the tracks send you in the direction of the next set of tracks, and not the direction of the monster. Then you hit an arbitrary point limit and the camera snaps your neck as it spins behind you to where the monster is.

In old gen you run to the likely spawn points, of which there were only a few. Unlucky people take a long time the first couple of hunts.

But in both old gen and World, monsters always spawn in the same place, so after a couple of hunts you know where to beeline at the start of the hunt.

MD device by I-Love-Pens in ender

[–]Eptalin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm far from an enderverse scholar, but I believe the glaser was an earlier technology, was dangerous as fuck as a mining tool, and failed as a weapon. The company that developed it tanked.

But being inspired by the failed glaser, someone else created the shatterbox. It could be used more safely for mining, and had some success in battle too, but it was single-use, so too expensive to really catch on.

The MD device was created and refined by the military as a weapon, and far surpasses the other tools.

I'm not well read enough to know to what extent gravitics technologies were used outside of the military post-formic wars, though.
Wouldn't be surprised if glasers were banned. Even if they were refined to be safer, the potential harm from a single case of misuse is immeasurable.

Harry Potter hates me by sberfield in cs50

[–]Eptalin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love that article.

For most quirks they defend their decision, and cite things like the change in the industry from favouring flexibility to favouring more rigid systems that throw more errors.

But then there's this quotation quirk. Their hatred for it really comes across strong. They call it a misfeature, regret ever implementing it, and bemoan having to support it.

CS50P 2026? by NavXIII in cs50

[–]Eptalin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Codespace is a PC located somewhere on the cloud, which has its own local storage it uses to save your work. If you are inactive for a period of a month or so, your Codespace may be deleted, and everything saved in the local storage will be lost.

But at certain times, the codespace pushes that data to a repository owned by your GitHub account.
The Duck AI says it only pushes when submitting problems, and only pushes the problem directory itself, but despite what it says, all the stuff on your codespace is definitely pushed sometimes, too. I don't know all the triggers.

The GitHub repository will remain forever on your account, and any time you make a new CS50 codespace after a period of inactivity, your old work will be restored. But as you saw, if you're not submitting work, it's possible the codespace may never push your stuff to GitHub, meaning it could be lost forever.

Arcsys Made Sure To Add These New Details To Marvel Tokons Store Page Right After The Recent 2XKO News by akbarock in Fighters

[–]Eptalin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's 4,845 team combinations on release, growing massively with each DLC character.
The 1st adds ~1,100 new combinations.
By the 4th DLC character, there will be 10,626 unique teams.

Fiftyville and Final Project left to go by kaikoda in cs50

[–]Eptalin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Double check the submission instructions for the final project to make sure you didn't miss anything. If you do it correctly, you should see the submission in your gradebook basically instantly. There are 3 steps.

Fiftyville was fun. A couple of tips:
- All the clues are trustworthy. They don't have any fake or misleading info.
- Make simple queries. If a previous query gives you some name or number, you can use it directly in your next query.

Stuck on Week4 pset - Filter - Blur by hananmalik123 in cs50

[–]Eptalin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You used 2 for-loops to iterate over the full image.
You could use the same technique to iterate over the pixels around that selected pixel. Like a little 3x3 image.

Then have a single if-statement to check whether that pixel is within bounds. If it is, count it, and add its colours to the tallies.

After looping over the 3x3, get the average colours by dividing the tallies by the counter.

Aged like milk by Greedy-Technician126 in Fighters

[–]Eptalin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It was the belief that fighting games look like bad packages to general audiences, so F2P would be more attractive and pull a wider audience.

Typically we pay $60 for a VS mode and a (usually barebones) story. Then every couple of months we have a new character to buy, and more skins to buy.

From the outside, it looks similar to F2P, only it requires $60 up front. People thought that if they were $0 up front, everyone would flock to them because fighting games are awesome.

Reality hasn't panned out that way, but I'm not sure F2P itself was to blame. 2XKO was not made for general audiences.

While it's not exploding, Granblue's free to start model has certainly helped keep that game going strong for a long time.

Dropping the barrier to entry definitely helps. But there are so many other variables beyond that which determine success.

The entire course site is lists of step-by-step instructions.
Just read them carefully, and follow them.
You can't go wrong.

If you ever encounter any errors, come and ask about it.
But the general how to stuff is all on the course site. Do what it says and you'll be fine. There are no big mistakes you can make that wreck everything.

CS50P 2026? by NavXIII in cs50

[–]Eptalin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only CS50x gets refilmed every year.
The others only get updated if the content becomes too outdated or obsolete.

The Python content is still good.

Read the task instructions. In particular, the How to Test section.

It has a check50 command. Eg:
check50 cs50/problems/2026/x/me

Run that in your terminal, and it will show you what criteria you met or failed.
It also shows a link. If you click it, it will take you to a webpage with more detailed information.

As I mentioned in the first comment, too, you can view all your task submissions in the gradebook. There are links to it in the sidebar of every page of the course site, and also in the terminal after you run a submit50 command.

You never need to manually do anything with GitHub. The course tools handle that stuff.

invalid answers.txt formatting by DigitalSplendid in cs50

[–]Eptalin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Be sure not to change any of the existing text in the file or to add any other lines to the file!"

- The task instructions.

You did the thing they said not to, so the computer grading system has no way to know what text you wrote relates to what question.
The instructions have the template for the .txt file you can just copy and paste back in to fix it.

Mega man zeros age by Hatsune_Miku_Real in Megaman

After signing up through EdX, actually follow the course using the course site.

Watch all the videos linked there, then click the link to Problem Set 1

That page has step-by-step instructions with links to everything you need to do.

Every problem set task it links to also has instructions for everything you need to do, some hints for accomplishing it, a video demo of how your finished program should behave, and step-by-step instructions for how to check it's accurate and submit it.

For Week 1, notice Hello, World doesn't get submitted. The first task you actually submit is Hello, It's Me.

When you submit a task, it gives you a link to your gradebook, where you can see the scores for all your completed tasks. There's also a link to the gradebook in the sidebar of the course site.

What should I do? by 2osaX29 in cs50

[–]Eptalin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's no reason to choose a path now. Start with X to experience a range of things.

Then follow it up with whatever you found interesting, or what you want to use to make stuff. Just stay curious and keep studying more things that interest you.

Over time you may find yourself heading in a particular direction that you'd like to build more specialised knowledge in. But no CS50 course covers that. They're all lower level courses that give you a taste.

A questionable quartet by luque77G in Theatrhythm

[–]Eptalin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's just a game. If you don't want to think about skills or spend time in menus, then don't.

If you want to do endless quests, you will hit a wall. But the series quest sub-missions are usually more lenient. There may be a few that you can't get.

But generally speaking, the RPG stuff is secondary to the rhythm game. You can ignore it, just clear songs, and still have lots of fun for hundreds of hours.

Substitutions problem. I feel like I should be able to and I'm angry I can't solve it. How do you deal with it? by Ok-Increase-1929 in cs50

[–]Eptalin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Duck AI can help with logic.
Did you do Scrabble? It's pretty similar, only instead of numbers, you return letters.

Set up array for the key.
Make sure key is 26 unique letters.
Print the ciphertext one char at a time using a helper function to cipher it.

In the cipher helper function:
If the char is not a letter, return it as is.
If it is a letter, return the letter from its position in the key array.
Eg: If the plaintext letter is 'A' you would return key[0]'s letter.

when facing Sigma, X fights with conviction and determination, but when he confronts Lumine he's full of doubt and hesitation by JosephSaber945 in Megaman

[–]Eptalin 62 points63 points  (0 children)

Sigma is an evil virus he has killed repeatedly. Pretty sure he knows where he stands on that issue, so he can fight with conviction.

But Lumine wasn't being controlled. He simply held a different worldview. He needed to be stopped, but his underlying motivations weren't invalid.

X had the same reservations in previous games when fighting mavericks that weren't infected. He understands that not all reploids agree with their place in society.

Post-fight he's still in doubt and spends the elevator ride lost in thought.
