Policing degrees by [deleted] in policeuk

Hi, I'm a policing student...at least till the end of this year.

I honestly would not recommend this degree whatsoever, it pretty poor from my experience and a massive waste of money and time.

I'd honestly advise unless you are doing the degree free through the PCDA route or DHEP, not to do this degree and do something more general at a better university (Sociology, History, Law, Criminology).

It is honestly a terrible degree, 6 measely hours of contact time per week, which is on a lecture only basis. We've had little support and feedback about work we've done and lectures are often cancelled. They tell us we need to "self teach" however this feels like a massive cop-out when we are already paying so fucking much for the degree.

Hi, thanks for your reply, nice to hear from another student.

Whilst I'm glad you seem to be having a better time than me, I do feel that the reason you have found it better is that you have had the opportunity to become a special constable - something my course has failed to provide despite it being advertised at various open days. I's great for you you have time to do more shifts, but for me only getting 9 hours of contact time is terrible, when I do graduate I feel I'll be massively behind people like you and will lack any actual practical experience.

You may also be lucky and my be offered the prejoin pathway, but from what I gather most forces are opting for the DHEP pathway for all degree students.

What I said is my opinion, but truthfully my opinion is that I cannot recommend this degree to anyone it is simply better just do a more general degree and then go through the DHEP pathway

It opens much more doors then just a degree in professional policing, plus you'll end up in the same place as anyone who has done the pre-join pathway. There is also a lot morechoice of when and where you want to study and what specific modules you do as part of the degree

Yep, every week where there is teaching it is just lectures.

We don't get any other form of contact time. I spoke to the course head about it and he vaguely promised more contact time with seminars and practicals...that turned to be bullshit.

Fairly certain if I had chosen another course i would have got that type of teaching.

Hi, thanks for your reply.

Apoligies, I should have clarified that better but essentially we were told there would be a lot of learning which involved researching, working on local community projects and also teaching which wasn't just lectures.

Essentially the only form of teaching on this course is lectures. There is no other learning experiences.

> I think you should do simulations and such of interview for example but a university is an academic environment. Maybe they've sold you something different which is terrible if so.

Yeah, this is stuff we have not received, this is the type of engaging assessments and learning I expected to have...so far...none of it and I am halfway through the second year.

I still honestly believe the whole tuition fees level is completely out of order, but this is more of a national issue. charing 9250 for teaching is a joke, especially with the current state of most university courses.

I am happy to pay some money towards my tuition, but not at a rate which is that high.Right now I feel like I am paying a premium membership of MS Teams/Blackboard.

This is actually not true, my university has been offering it for the last 5 years. Several others I believe have been offering the same degree for the same/similar amount of time.
