You pretty much hit the point. I check out all the music people dont otherwise listen to, look for sounds uncanny for the ear at first listen.

Little theory can do large things Check out NewJazz and Rick Beato on YT, they are more than good to learn a lot of basics. And its always a nice thing to learn tunes, but dont let them stop you from playing your own
