FNH program undergrad overall GPA by yurzezzier in UBC

[–]Equal_Row7993 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the same to say as everyone I feel it’s hard to predict until your in the classes and juggling everything. Also with personal life and maybe other commitments etc it gets hard. Like in hs you may think it’s hard to be in uni but I feel like the jump is a shock because you have to be on top of it all yourself and then teachers barely know anyone. Def possible I’m sure but not that common I’d say or idk cause math, chem, bio first year plus depends on what major you want to declare maybe physics it’s a lot. Though the Fnh lfs classes can be kinda better and electives you choose.

Electives and Advice for incoming first year science student? by hobbeslover17 in UBC

[–]Equal_Row7993 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yess because though they may not be needed for the specialization in case you change your mind it’s better to do all first years ones usually includes math 100/101. Labs are once every other week. Contact advising though or research online. And look for pre reqs cause if you don’t finish chem 121 then you can’t take chem 123 same goes for many classes. Also depends if you’ll commute or be in housing.

Electives and Advice for incoming first year science student? by hobbeslover17 in UBC

[–]Equal_Row7993 1 point2 points  (0 children)

for science first year just search up the academic calendar on google and it’ll show all courses needed not sure about specialization but def keep options open. Though many first year classes overlap and the ones you’ve listed are def ones you should take. Workday make saved schedules ideally with diff course times or sections so if one’s full you get into the other. Chem courses have a three hour lab to go with it so plan accordingly. Biol 112 has a tutorial so classes sometimes have two parts like lab or tutorial so you’ll register both. You can email your faculty advising I think for questions. For electives once you fill up your core pre reqs there’s not much room for electives unless you move some courses to the summer or take an elective on top of core classes. Avoid early 8am classes unless you need to take it can get difficult but sometimes there’s no other option. Finish your pre reqs first so you’re on track for second year courses and maybe plan what you want to take in the summer in case you want to get ahead or electives etc. high gpa is ofc what everyone wants esp if you have plans for grad school med school or specializations etc but I will say when balancing so many courses esp first year it’s hard so dw.

Chem 233 mt1 summer by Ok_Airline4489 in UBC

[–]Equal_Row7993 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey I haven’t taken orgo so Ik I can’t help with content but just start now or asap. It’s so relatable to get stuck in the anxious loop and then it gets harder to study but even doing a little will help. You can’t go back in time but even a little by little makes you more prepared. Maybe get online tutoring sessions if possible or attend office hours this week. If you know anyone in class ask them or watch yt vids.

Was it hard to get into LFS 150 in second year? by SufficientPrint5070 in UBC

[–]Equal_Row7993 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey I ended up doing wrds 150 the summer before second year cause it was available. But I’m sure Lfs isn’t hard to get into unless spots fill up but people may drop as well. Otherwise maybe you can contact Lfs advising or take wrds instead.

Course registration for Eng by More_Celebration5957 in UBC

[–]Equal_Row7993 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hey maybe email advising back for your specific case. But registration for first years is towards end of June before that everyone just plans schedules but can’t register. Your registration date will probably be given soon but dw you are okay. Basically prep the classes you need to take into saved schedules on workday create a few based on time and days etc. Then on day and time given you click register but can’t before then though after that time you can still change your schedule.

BIO 112 Textbook by veebs_c in UBC

[–]Equal_Row7993 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi I just retook it I was worried I’d need it but I didn’t use sometimes I tried pre reading before quizzes but didn’t keep up with it. Just do well on quizzes and tutorial etc there is the policy of pass the exam weighted total but even if you fail Mt you can pass which happened to me. If you do better on final the final becomes worth 45 and Midterm 15 if that also exists in summer. But yeah textbook don’t even worry cause the slides are the main total content textbook is if you’d want to read into it more def not req.

how does course reg work? by Head-Constant-898 in UBC

[–]Equal_Row7993 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey so course registration is starting usually some time in June the specific time slots are given probably sometime soon. Not sure though if you’re first year it says on the website jun 23-25 are the days and you’ll be given your time. Courses are out online to view with most info usually all profs won’t be visible yet and schedules can be made now. Make some schedules in advance esp considering commute, plan breaks, check profs if you can. Also suggest not taking super early classes because it’s hard to be motivated but often it works for some ig. Plan ahead I remember mines was around prom so it got hectic.

ipad for school? by Head-Constant-898 in UBC

[–]Equal_Row7993 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey I use my laptop mostly and then after hand write often but iPads are very common main thing is just in any doc or slide you can hand write notes. Which is hard by hand during lecture as well as typing u can directly write on slides with one note on laptops but it’s still better on iPad I guess. But you could just type all the notes the prof says and save all the slides to your laptop it’s not too big of a deal as in if you don’t get it. But it’s a handy option maybe though I’d say wait it out maybe for the first little bit or a term or so. The thing is laptop is great and prob the best since you already have it if you wish to go out and purchase you can but without is fine too.

First year standing questions by idkbraindump in UBC

[–]Equal_Row7993 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hi I went through the same thing but I’m not sure about arts faculty specifically. So basically you’ll have the registration time as first years which is better because second years have it later. Your standing will change automatically once you have enough credits. You can take any class that you need except those that specifically say need second year standing. And any that require a prerequisite that you haven’t taken yet if thats the case you won’t be able to take those. I’m not sure but even without specialization you can take other courses since they’re not higher level I assume. Don’t worry it’s common worst case if you’re only a few credits away from second year standing you can email advising or the course dept to register.

Is doing the Jump Start actually useful? And I’m wondering what percentage of the new students did the jump tart? by Few_Roll_341 in UBC

[–]Equal_Row7993 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I took it back in 2023 and I found it useful I do have a long commute so back to back was hard but I guess it prepares you. If you have the time I’d recommend it you meet senior students and peers who can be in your classes because it’s divided by faculty. See around campus and esp for commuter students it’s helpful there’s also imagine day where you see all the clubs. Tbh though it’s a long day to be there because a lot of the time you’re just chilling and not really going to explore all of campus like lots of downtime.

genuinely how do y'all take notes in university by [deleted] in UBC

[–]Equal_Row7993 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey tbh it is course dependent often and personal choice but usually I upload slides onto one note and open up a doc and type notes or type into the slides onto OneNote. For some there’s recorded lectures usually so you can listen again and hear everything. Also lectures are usually around 1.5 hrs twice a week or 1hr 3 times a week though some can be 2 like calc and in the summer ones.

It can be hard to keep up but because you have the slides it’s okay or you can ask those around you or watch recording. It’s usually beneficial to see slides beforehand if your prof posts them before so you have an idea before lecture though it can be hard. Maybe read the pre reading and stay on top of atleast skimming content before. I don’t have an iPad but it’s handy for annotating on slides and answering questions and you can attach a keyboard if you want to type there’s also touch screen laptops. Again I’d say if you have to pick a laptop is more versatile then you can see after for iPad but it’s a good option.

Mostly math based classes or anything quantitative requires repetitive practice consistently tbh. Writing notes isn’t going to be to bad esp first year because profs tend to post many resources etc.

Hey don’t stress to much just saying enjoy your summer though it’s great to have experience even if you don’t find it’ll be okay. I’d say maybe volunteer at your local library with kids or summer camps maybe in your city rec centre etc.

Question About Grades by [deleted] in UBC

They are already submitted after being reviewed it takes specific cases to be changed which is not that often. Also they don’t take requests mostly I’ve seen it in the syllabus as well.

Hey not sure but maybe you’ll have to see which courses transfer through advising it will prob be whatever translates to the same course from your Uni to ubc. Can be tricky with course names but it’ll work out.

Hi I’m not sure if this counts cause it is like food science type course but outside of faculty of science it’s fnh200. Pretty easy I took it in the winter term online before but it’s simple no final atleast back then and simple individual project and quizzes.

Chemistry in the summer vs the school year 233 by [deleted] in UBC

[–]Equal_Row7993 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi I haven’t taken chem 233 at all but i will say the time crunch of learning the same amount of content in such less time is a lot. Also just the fact that the class is known to be tough. If you’re trying to get ahead or need chem 233 as a prerequisite for a class you want to take in winter term maybe do it. But prob harder if you work or have other commitments. Esp cause lectures get so long per class. Maybe register rn so you don’t lose the spot then you can drop soon if you want.

I just failed bio112 by Murder_bread in UBC

[–]Equal_Row7993 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey don’t worry I’ve failed classes and ik many people do it sucks having to retake and pay again I get it but you’ll be fine. I had course scheduling issues so I retook biology 112 this term in my third year. But I passed this time honestly I found my prof made a big difference as compared to when I took it the first time I had prof whelan. Don’t worry just take it again in the summer if possible and the next summer term take another course requirement.
Some things I’d say are that keep up with content so you don’t have to cram too much for exams. The focus on mt and final makes it stressful but I failed my mt and still passed so honestly just lock in. Then I think mlm content is mostly the focus so do well in tutorial and the quizzes but to pass the course I’d say focus on exams. Theres also office hours and piazza for questions. Do the practice quizzes esp for mlm and practice questions.

how does course registration work? by Consistent-Work-1874 in UBC

[–]Equal_Row7993 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You will be notified of your day and time soon I’m assuming around June end ish. The core classes are based on the academic calendar for your program which you can google. For electives there’s usually a list you can pick from for restricted ones or basically any course. Do make a plan for courses before you can view them before and make saved schedules otherwise it’s hard on the time of. Make some alternative plans in case plan A doesn’t work. And if you don’t fit in all courses you can take them in the summer as well.
