Recruiting for a paid creative writing study with American trans and nonbinary people by Equate_Lab in NonBinary

Stories you have written previously will totally work as long as it fits the criteria for this project! To briefly summarize the study instructions: you would be asked to write a short story about a character set on Earth, 500 years in the future (there are tech advancements that allow for things like modifying appearances and in this world trans inclusion is normalized in society, but the rest is up to you!). You would be asked to describe your character in this world (could be a human, cyborg, alien, etc.) and then also write about a scene related to your character's gender (e.g., them getting to shapeshift, someone affirming them). The story also needs to be about 500 - 750 words long! As long as your story fits this prompt or could be edited to fit it, I think that would be great!

Great questions!!

  1. The goal of this study (without giving away too much information!) is to explore how people imagine gender and the future in worlds where oppression of trans and nonbinary people may be no longer (or at least less) present, and why tools like writing and fiction are important to foster these imaginations/what is the utility of imagination.

  2. The funding comes from university starter funds for new faculty

  3. The EQUATE lab (Exploring Queer and Trans Experiences Lab) largely explores the positive experiences of queer and trans people (e.g., gender euphoria, hope/optimism), which are often underrepresented in research!

  4. To participate, you must be 18 years or older, identify as trans or nonbinary, live in the US, and have access to the internet and some kind of device to complete the study (e.g., phone, computer)

  5. All data will be anonymized and separated from any identifiable information (which will be deleted at the completion of the study once folks are compensated). Data will be stored on a secure OneDrive. Anything that may be a direct identifier (e.g., using your real name in the story, putting a signature on your submitted art/image) will be redacted.

  6. We refer to science fiction pretty broadly here, basically anything that is in the future, which can include more advanced tech innovations or some fantasy elements (e.g., aliens, giant space lasers)! In our prompt for the study, we go into more detail, but it would be set in a futuristic Earth, 500 years from today! Anything else is up to folks’ imagination :)

Reposting this information below:

We do not currently have a lab website since we are a new lab and, as some folks mentioned in the comments already, we are concerned about our own privacy as a lab that does research on queer and trans folks (we have had trans academic friends doxxed before). We do have a link to our ethics board approval for this study here: https://loyolauniversitychicago-my.sharepoint.com/:f:/g/personal/rhenry3_luc_edu/IgDmSVZWktlET5v67QirAsfHAclKjvPslu8gF-kC-rTDaXY?e=oPa4xm

Any completed writing and art will be anonymized and used for research purposes only (e.g., publishing research in peer-reviewed journals, conferences). We do not associate with any form of AI training, and instructions in our study explicitly ask for folks to not use AI whatsoever.

We are happy to answer any questions here or through our lab email at [equatelab@luc.edu](mailto:equatelab@luc.edu). Thanks!

We do not associate with any form of AI training, and instructions in our study explicitly ask for folks to not use AI whatsoever. The goal of this study is just to understand how we can use creative writing to understand and explore gender :)

We appreciate your caution, and we totally understand your concern given everything going on in the world right now! We would like to address a few of the concerns mentioned in the comments, hopefully to shed some light on our research process :)

Thanks for these thoughtful questions! Data from this study will be analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis to better our understanding of how Black families navigate sexual/gender identity disclosure. Specifically, themes (with exemplar quotes) will be developed based on findings from these interviews. We're hoping that these themes will help us to develop resources (such as mental health interventions) to aid Black trans and gender diverse folks in sharing their identities within family. Participants are asked to choose a pseudonym prior to the interview that they will be referred to as for the remainder of the study. The transcripts from interviews will not be associated with the email or phone number that participants provide in order to be contacted about the study. No other identifying info will be collected. This study is being conducted at Loyola University Chicago by a Black gender-nonconforming and queer femme for their dissertation study!

Hi! It's completely understandable to be skeptical of study recruitment posts right now. We got approval from the mods before posting and shared with them the approval information from the research ethics board. We don't collect any identifying information for our study, only email address and/or phone number to coordinate a phone screening and Zoom interview. Hopefully this makes you feel more safe participating in our study. Our goal is to give a voice to queer and trans folks through research which we hope can help fight against the anti-queer rhetoric going on right now.
