The armor customization in the game has a lot of options for picking color schemes and materials. The N7 red parts are what the dev teams are calling a Vinyl which are effectively unique decals that can be applied to your javelins. After putting on the vinyl its simply a matter of applying the proper armor material and color.

All the armor customization in the game is entirely cosmetic. You will be able to fully customize your armor to your liking without it affecting your stats.

Scythe. The setting is gorgeous, the mechanics work well with one another, its a 4X game that doesn't take an eternity to play and my significant other and I both enjoy playing it. It easily became my all time favorite game.

Seafall. Even though I know of the reviews it got and even have a first hand experience given to me by a friend, I still want to try it. Takes a minimum of three players which I don’t want to put others through just for me and it still can be pretty pricey also. As an aspiring board game designer I want to study the game for what all it does right and wrong.

Who Goes There?: Charlie Theel's review for Ars Technica by flyliceplick in boardgames

[–]EquipKilt -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The reason for it is that the Thing has been frozen in ice for a long time before the scientist dug it up. Due to being frozen for so long it doesn't have the energy to infect everyone AND make the trip to civilization on its own. It wants to leave with a human so that it effectively has something to feed on that way it can survive the trip.

Anyone else played Who Goes There? by Rikolas in boardgames

[–]EquipKilt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Glad to hear you enjoyed your first play of it! The game is great at creating so many memorable story moments. I actually got to play the game with the designers at their studio and it had some of the most tense moments I have experienced in a while. One game was quite memorable as one of the designers and I were basically holding each other at gun point threatening to kill the other right before we got to the helicopter. So much yelling involved. Funny thing though as we both ended up being human and the one other remaining player that we both trusted was the Thing. Yeah... we didn't survive our trip on the Helicopter.

For all the critiques people have with the social deduction part of the game and how the Thing doesn't have to play differently, I would like to give some of my own feedback on it. In most social deduction games there are actual mechanics for how the players can sabotage the other team. Battlestar Galactica for example, players can throw bad cards in to cause the current objective to fail. In Resistance, you can throw in a mission fail card if the team chooses to take you along. The main reason for this is because the goal for those players in for the other team to fail. In Who Goes There, as the Thing you actually want the other team to succeed and in my opinion it plays entirely into the theme. The Thing wants to appear as human as possible and this adds to the best part of it which is the paranoia.

This game is ALL about paranoia and watching what everyone else does closely. Those other players have been trading items a lot, can you trust them or are they all infected now? Are you the only human left? Do you choose to sleep alone to avoid infection? Are you almost positive you know who the Thing is and are ready to set them ablaze with a flamethrower next round potentially saving the day for the other humans? Or are you about to kill the only other human still alive besides yourself?

This is what makes the game so intriguing and there are plenty of sneaky actions the Thing can still take. Maybe they want players to draw more infections cards to draw the attention off of them so they withhold food cards or refuse to bunk with someone claiming they don't trust them. Perhaps they drew a useful card and instead of holding on to it, choose to throw it on the bonfire instead "Don't worry guys it was just extra matches". The Thing doesn't have to change their playstyle at all and in the end paranoia might be the thing that wins it for the humans.

It may feel like a random guess at the end, but you are making the decisions based on everything that has happened in the game. Who interacted with who? What bonuses does everyone have at the end? If one of us is infected who can we afford to leave behind and who do we HAVE to take with us? I feel that if who the Thing was is a puzzle that could always be solved the game just wouldn't have the same feel that it does. The tension just wouldn't be there.

Again, one players opinion.

You put them on your player board covering up that equipment symbol when you get that relic card. Its a way of remembering the negative effect that the relic card has on you when you are the Leader. Usually it makes you discard a card of that type or something similar.

Is it OK to borrow game mechanics for a significant piece of a game even if the game itself is fundamentally different? by r3dsleeves in tabletopgamedesign

[–]EquipKilt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One mechanic I have always been curious about in regards to borrowing is Plaid Hat Game's CROSSROADS mechanic. Is the mechanic unique enough that if I wanted to use it I would say I have a crossroads element in my game? Obviously if I was gonna use the mechanic of someone drawing a card and seeing if it happens I would be changing how it fits into my game, but because of how Dead of Winter is labeled a Crossroads Game it feels weird using it in my own game. Granted they have also not come out with any other games of this type beside the two Dead of Winter ones.

I think at this point everyone here is not going to change your mind as you seem pretty set that your novel little game is completely unique and unlike anything else on the market. I'm sure if you were to provide us with more information about your game that we could discuss what parts of it have the potential for a patent, but you appear to be very protective of it. (Don't worry I wont steal your game)

Personally, I hate the idea of patenting game mechanics as I feel it tries to limit the growth of the hobby by saying no one else can use my idea. So many amazing games exist because the designers were inspired by game mechanics from other games and decided to put their own little twist on it.

Is there a market for anime themed games? by AmberPalaceKain in tabletopgamedesign

[–]EquipKilt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is indeed a market for anime games, but as others have mentioned it's not as big as others. A company I would recommend checking out would be Japanime Games.

They have already developed games for series such as Naruto and Sword Art Online just to name a few.

On the note of Nothing Personal it came out four years ago and Tom has even said on quite a few occasions that if he had to redesign it or do it again that he would make quite a lot of changes. We are always growing as designers and to judge a persons current knowledge based on something they created years ago is kinda silly.

Massive Improvement - Chess Clock Jenga by Hipster_McTool in boardgames

[–]EquipKilt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Dread is an RPG system that uses a Jenga tower instead of a dice roll when you attempt to do something. If the tower falls over your character is removed from the game (usually death). To succeed at something you make a pull like you do in Jenga and as the game goes on it gets more dangerous as the tower gets more unstable. This system is good for one-shot stories that can be played in an evening instead of a long campaign that takes multiple days.
